I figured out approximately how much $ we would need to budget for tips on our upcoming trip. We are not planning on bringing cash, but will likely use a GC or our KTTW card to charge it back to the room. Today, a friend of ours said we do not have to leave a tip because they will automatically charge us the 18% if we do not leave one. Is this true? I would tend to believe this person - they are a seasoned Disney veteran, with DVC, but this does not seem right. He said it was more for convenience - they don't have to wait around at the end of a meal to get their card back? Just wondering out of curiosity. We have always left a cash tip or put it on our CC. I mostly ask because DH tends to believe EVERYTHING this person says about Disney. :rotfl: Thanks so much!

and yes, I know that larger groups are automatically charged the 18%, but this person is usually with their family of 4, so that is not why they say it is so - KWIM?

How would they "automatically" charge you without some form of payment? If you're on DDP, they could charge your KTTW card, but I believe that is illegal, and I'm not even sure they could do that without the card in hand (which should be in your hand if you've left). If you pay cash or gift card, they would have no way of charging it after you leave.

This is what I thought, it just does not make any sense to me. DH swears they did this, and they were just there 2 weeks ago, and it is something new. I don't like it. Especially if we have an awesome server - I want to leave them more than 18%. Plus, really, how long does it take for them to run a card? Would an extra 5 minutes at a restaurant really make a difference? :confused3

Can't believe this is my first post here after reading thread after thread for at least 3-4 years.

Going for our 3rd trip at the end of January but this time we have additional family going which puts us in the auto-tip category (8 total heads).

How does the auto-tip work? Since there are 2 families we will have separate KTTW cards with our credits. Does one of us just cover the tip on our KTTW card and figure it out later? Curious...

I wonder if perhaps this is what happened:

There is a "suggested" tip at the bottom of the receipt, and I believe you can just sign for that to be your tip. Perhaps they didn't read the fine print and just thought it was automatic and signed it that way.

Whether or not you have separate KTTW cards doesn't matter. Each separate party seated together at a table will be assessed an automatic tip on their bill. This is for parties of 6 or more. You can choose your method of payment and you can leave extra if you prefer. If you are a party of 5 or fewer, you decide the amount of your tip.

"Auto charge" does not mean your KTTW card will be automatically charged. It means the tip will be automatically figured and added to your bill. You then pay it.

There is a sticky thread on the main dining board for all tipping discussion. Please read the first post of that thread as it has a tipping FAQ and an explanation as to why all tipping discussion is limited to that thread.
