Autism Question

OMG thank goodness I found this thread. Just last week after seeing our pediatric dev. pediatrician for our yearly visit, he said my 4yr old dd has autistic tendencies ie: Aspergers Syndrom!! My jaw hit the floor. I thought he was going to tell me to go home and quit wasting his time and money. My dd was premature and has been in Early Intervention since 6mos old. Her unofficial label is Developmental Delay. She has low tone on right side but is doing well with PT. When I mentioned this to her therpaists and teachers -all 6 of them- they couldn't believe it either. So, the doc gave me Tony Attwood's web site (great for AS) and told me to read everything about AS and see him in 6 mos. She does have some social problems but it may be that she has 2 teen siblings and is really the only child. Plus she only is around other little kids at school (9hrs a week) so now I watch, record everything and wait. Thanks you all for the info on this thread,a nd for letting me share!

This situation just came up. My DS is PDDNOS. A friend of mine watches a few children in her house. She asked me about one of the children that she thinks has some behavioral problems and other delays.

I gave her some of my books on Autism and Developmental Delays. After reading the books she feels the child has some delays. She has tried to mention it to the mother but didn't seem to get anywhere. I suggested to make of copy of the list and to mail it to her with no return address. I know this could be considered mean but the Parent could be in denial or not truely aware of the options out there available to them.

Regarding the pediatrician, mine never came up with the diagnosis. My son had delayed speech at 2 years old and if it wasn't for another mother who mentioned getting him evaluated by the Dept of Health or the School system. I really just thought it was a speech problem and nothing else. I don't think pediatricians spend enough time examining the children to really come up with something so intense.

BTW my son is doing wonderfully he is in an intergrated 4th grade class and it is definately due to Early Intervention.

Another great site for Aspergers and PDD is www.aspergersyndrome.org. Barb Kirby runs a great site and message board. The message boards were my lifeline in the early days of my son's DX and I still frequent it.

I picked up two copies of Tony Attwood's books when I had the chance. One gets passed around. First it was the doubting family members, now it goes to any new caregiver who works with my son.
