Hello all! We are looking to relocate to South Carolina and I thought that I'd post a thread here to ask if anyone from the area has any info/advice to share regarding services for autism in the state. I'm not certain what area we will be moving to so we are open to any suggestions. Our son will be 16 in the fall so we are interested in finding out about special needs programming in high school in addition to therapy/medical care in the area. Any information would be appreciated!

Unfortunately, programming varies wildly from district to district. If you have narrowed your location choices down, perhaps someone could help.

Sorry...I didn't take that into account! Do you happen to know anything about the Summerville area?

Not personally, but I have some friends in that area. They have a son who is around 14. I will ask them and get back to you. It may take a couple of days.

I would really appreciate that! And by all means, take your time...we're not in a partcularly huge rush to move!

We live near Summerville, make sure you choose a home in the Dorchester Two school district, that is the only good one in Summerville if that is important to you. My son is 3 and is being evaluated now. He goes for therapy at public school here now. I have to say that it is rare to find a really GREAT school here, unless you go with private school. Some people might flame me, but SC is ranked 49th in education?! The services my son is getting now though seem to be fine, sorry I don't know more about high school. PM me if you want more info about the area.

I do not know the territory, however my best advice to you is to get an advocate!!! My son has never been in a self contained environment. He has HFA. I hear it gets harder in the preceding years. The special ed programs you can definately find by IST head. That is what we call it in the South. Or at least here in Ga.
