Make sure you see the bats at sunset. They fly out from under the Congress Bridge at it's fantastic!

Try to catch a movie at one of the Alamo Draft Houses. I'm a big Ain't It Cool News fan so seeing a movie at the Alamo Draft House was a treat for me.

I think I used this website to see what sort of music was going on around town while I was there. I had to go out at night and catch some live bands.

We went for a long weekend last June and had a wonderful time. Dh was there for a conference and I had four children to entertain, so our choices might not be the same as two adults going...but here's some things we enjoyed:

County Line BBQ--delicious. simply delicious. I'm not a huge BBQ fan, but I was eating the sauce with bread. It was that good.

Hut's Hamburgers--been in business since 1939--they mst be doing something right! Tiny little place that doesn't look like much, but had great juicy burgers.

There's also some food stands throughout the city that are supposed to be really good, but we didn't see them. Southern Living did a big write up on them a while back.

We toured the Texas state capitol and the Bob Bullock museum. Both were interesting because my kids were learning about Texas history in school.

Tour 6th Street. Since we had the kids, we went during the day, but I wish we could have gone back at night for the entertainment.

Austin is a very neat little town! Have fun!

If you want to see the absolutely most beautiful sunset in Texas go to the Oasis restaurant.

If you're willing to take a scenic drive for some good family style BBQ, try The Salt Lick, http://www.saltlickbbq.com/. Stick with the original location in Driftwood.

Not sure if you're into bars and music, bands etc., but Austin is pretty famous for a major bar/band scene, I think a lot of it is on 6th Street, which is the kind of famous bar row street. Kind of like Beale Street in Memphis, only 6th in Austin has a lot more bars and bands than Memphis. I believe that is also where they used to have, maybe still do, the South X Southwest Music Fesitival Showcase, kind of a music festival with bands trying to make it.

When we are in Austin we like to eat at Hulu Hut (it is on the lake) and Chuys. Also good but not as good at Chuy's is Matt's El Rancho (aka El Matt's).You can't be in Austin and not have Mexican food.

Yes! Definitely Hula Hut or Chuy's!!

If you are looking for a trendy, upscale meal, then you have to go to Uchi. It's worth the wait for a table, but it is quite expensive.

South Congress Avenue has some cool vintage stores and other fun shops. Everyone is also super-friendly there.
If you're into the bar scene, go to 6th Street at night. Great music most of the time.

Breakfast at Kerby Lane, dinner at Salt Lick, dessert at Amy's Ice Cream. See a movie at the Drafthouse and see the bats at sunset. Man, this is all making me so homesick for Austin!!

Rudy's BBQ and Z Tejas were also favorite restaurants of our's. If you are in to natural/organics it's worth it to go to the Whole Foods Market flagship store at 5th and Lamar.

I went to college there many years ago. I was back last spring for a wedding that happened to occur during South by Southwest. I will never return to Austin, never. I told my three nieces who went to school there not to get married in Austin, because I wouldn't be attending their wedding. That town is awful. It used to be a nice quiet college town with lots of fun places to go. No longer.

Too much traffic. Too many people. Too many ways to get separated from your money.

And the campus doesn't even look like the campus I knew. It looks like a big downtown complex now. Not like a university campus.

Original Salt Lick, and it's BYOB! Make sure you try the cole slaw! Pick up a 6 pack of their sauce for me!

If warm, try swimming at Barton Springs. I am a fan of Pappasitos as well for Tex Mex. And Threadgills for beer and Chicken Fried Steak...yum....but rumor has it there are better at other places around now (you can google it for other options)

The SXSW music festival just ended so that is not an option until next spring. I also second (or is it third?) Kerby Lane Cafe, Amy's Ice Cream & 6th Street, and the previous BBQ joints recommended.

Austin is lovely...and ever-changing college town. Much bigger than when I went to school there, but still some wonderful gems.

I'm going with Rudy's for BBQ, I'm not a fan of County Line at all. Chuys for TexMex is ok. There are a few better for more traditional Mexican. There is a hole in the wall off Guadalupe north of campus that is good.

There is a cool ecletic place down by the river off the street that intersects with the Capitol area anyone know what that is?

Chuy's is okay, but Matt's El Rancho on Lamar is the best. I went to college at UT and go back to Austin as often as I can. Whoever recommended the Oasis over Lake Travis is right. It's lovely. 6th St. is fun at night, but not for kids, as you know. Zilker Park is a lot of fun, there's a train. http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/zilker/ A tour of the capitol bldg. is fun, it used to be free but I'm not sure about now. Have fun! Austin is my fave Texas city.
