In Las Vegas last year, we answered with Australia. The lady asking us told us she wanted to visit Australia, on her previous trip she made it as far as Switzerland.

But I think I may of told that story a few times before!

Years ago, we were asked if we were from England. In October last year so many people asked if it was an Australian or Kiwi accent which was good.

Did any of you read the article in the sunday paper about travel insurance?
It's a bit of a worry. I am going to call the various companies tomorrow and see where it stands. I haven't booked any yet but was planning to do so this week just to be safe, but even the insurance governing body couldn't answer whether you would be covered if the government said don't travel. Apparently some insurances even have pandemic or similiar in the fine print. I was tossing up between worldcare and TID. Has anyone else checked if they are covered and to what extent?

I did too! I had to say March that many times on the phone last year, and the 2nd I turned it into "Morch" he understood me!

I really don't think Australia would be stupid enough to issue a travel warning against the US. I just cant see it happening.

I also cant see a need for people to stock up on 14 days worth of food and water, incase we have to stay in our homes for that long...

I agree, just saw a story saying Mexico announced the flu is easing. It would make it easier if they made the insurance conditions easy to understand though.

I read an article the other day (can't remember the source though) where it said that the bird flu killed about 1000 people, and the normal flu in Australia kills about 30,000 people EVERY year, so if the swine flu is as bad as the bird flu it's going to kill approximately 1000 people compared to 30,000 people that die from the flu every year?
Insurance companies will try and weasel out of any claim, won't they? just another excuse for them not to pay....

I've read on a few threads that people take Ibupropen when they get home each night from the parks, just before bed. Is this an anti inflammatory??? What would be the brand name for something like that here in Oz? And why exactly are people taking this??

its not a brand name you can get it with nuerofin and panadol and such. as for the reason i spose its cause some people will use it to take there mind of whatever pain they have gotten at the parks. like sore feet or legs so they can sleep better for the next day

Hi gogo55. In my experience the fares from the US into Canada are generally quite high in comparison to US destinations. We usually try to fly into the nearest US airport and cross via land. I know this isn't always an opton, but if you are renting a car (this can also be cheaper from the US) and your final Canadian destination isn't too far from the border then maybe check out this option. Flights from US into Canada attract higher taxes than US domestic flights so this makes up a small portion of the added prices. We use our frequent flyer points alot and a trip from LAX to Syracuse NY will cost us USD6.00 each in taxes, where fling into Toronto will cost around USD 60.00 each. Same number of points for each per ticket. Our final destination is around the same distance. On the rare occassion where we have had to pay for our flights within North America and not use FF points we have always found it much cheaper to fly US domestic.

Ummm, I don't think it is panadol. Ibuprofin in the states is commonly Advil which you can get here, as well. I'm not sure of the differences, but I prefer Advil over panadol. What you're used to I guess.

As somebody else says, it's just a way to get over the aches & pains & ready for another day of fun.

Ibuprofen is the active ingredient in Nurofen, and you can take it similiar to panadol however it can be harse on the tummy and you are not supposed to take it on an empty stomach.

This might sound silly but I love going to the US pharmacies as well. Just read today that we pay double the price for the same medication than in the US. I bought some Excedrin last time after some advice from someone on DIS and i thought it was the absolute best thing for major headaches that I was sometimes getting after a punishing day at the parks with the backpack !!

Good to see that the dollar hit 74c today, its picked up over 12c in the past two monts, I am going to get some more today, although it is possible of it going a bit higher in the next few weeks.

Has anyone been to the Pacific Park on Santa Monica Pier? Planning to spend a day around Santa Monica, wondering if it is good or whether it's a quick visit.

Pacific Park is a very small amusement park - the rides are much more like what you would get at an A and P Show here (can't remember what you call them in Oz - like the Royal Show?) It's cute, but if you've done DL and Universal or any of the other big LA parks I wouldn't bother - not that that stopped our kids asking if they could go on the little roller-coaster mind you!!
The pier is nice for a walk and a view out over the Pacific - lots of side shows and stuff to look at.
If you are in Santa Monica, you are close-ish to the Getty Center, which is definitely worth a visit - the site and buildings are fantastic, even if you're not a big art buff.

Here's the park behind DF. It's sorta like Luna Park - expensive and a little dingy. It's pretty, and you see it in a lot of TV shows or movies (just as glances)

We prefered to walk around and look at stuff as aposed to paying for any of the rides.

Has anyone herebeen to San Diego, Vegas or New York? We're going to all three places as part of our trip and I was wondering if you could suggest must do things to do while we are there?

We will have two full days in San Diego and are planning on going to Seaworld & the zoo. On our arrival day we will arrive around lunchtime. Any suggestions of what we can do in the afternoon? We won't have a car and are staying at The Dana on Mission bay (next to Seaworld).

In Vegas we're staying at the Bellagio & in New York, The Westin hotel in Times Square.

G'day Butterflykisses. We've stayed at the Dana Inn on Mission Bay, and you will definitely love it. We've also stayed at Hotel Circle in San Diego and would never go back there, Dana Inn for us now. If the weather is fine, you're kids not too small (if you have any) and you're feeling fit, walk to Sea World, don't catch the shuttle. It's flat and takes about 15-20 minutes or so. On a nice day it's great and you'll walk past the Marinas and also some interesting Sea World stuff.

On the afternoon you get there, jump on a bus and head down the road to Mission Beach. It's only about a 5 minute drive. There is a fair ground there, some great little shops selling surf gear and other oddments, plenty to eat and you can watch the sunset over the beach at dusk. It's very much like a small coastal town we have here and is so different to San Diego itself. It's a nice place to see.

Vegas is easy, just walk the strip. New York New York has a great Roller Coaster and the eatery and shopping area is just fantastic. Bellagio of course has the water show which is a must see, but there is so much to see and do. The M&M Factory and Coca Cola factory are across the road from New York, and whilst they're just big shops, worth a look as well. The Medievel show in the Excallibur (across the road from New York) is also worth seeing and not too bad value. Dinner and a show as well. Vegas is sureal and so much to see and do and just explore.

New York, don't have a clue ...
