I thought I read chairs and umbrellas are free now for aulani guests or DVC members. Can anyone recently confirm?

Unless things have changed chairs and umbrellas are free. First come, first serve. Casabellas are also available for a charge. There are plenty of chairs but umbrellas are not as plentiful. They have quite a few but if it's busy it may be difficult to get one.
