Aulani chair policy favors chair savers

I've often wondered why pools don't set up hooks/lockers by the pool so that ppl who don't care about a chair but just want to put their stuff can do so. Many, many times we know we will be actively swimming the whole time and won't need a chair. But there really is nowhere else to put our stuff so we HAVE to claim a chair/table.

As for chair claiming, when I was on a Disney cruise and was away a little longer than I had expected, the staff just picked up my stuff and moved it to a nearby location. I came back, saw my stuff was not there, found it a few feet away, reclaimed it, and shrugged. I walked away after all. I thought it was fair.

Aulani's policy seems a little complicated. Just say: "no seat saving". And put a set of coat hangers/cubbies nearby. If your chairs are empty for a while, then your stuff will be moved to the cubbies.

Honestly, we were there June 5-12 and we didn't have this problem at all. The pool was busy, but we always found chairs. Personally I think the early arrivers kind of create an issue out of nothing, but really there were chairs.

What was a problem was getting an inner tube. A bit of a challenge.

I just want to add: The Aulani pool was always busy, but there were always chairs that were open. You had to look a little but you could find some. I thought the Aulani CMs were as diligent as possible. Lots of times we went to the pool after some sightseeing so it was mid day and still found chairs. We spent one whole day at the pool and that was the day we got up early to get a seat looking at the ocean. It was a beautiful view and we had a great day at the pool. We were there all day.

We've been to Aulani 4 times in the last 2 years and never had an issue getting two seats together. Our plan of attack however is when we are at the beach we get seats down there. Then when we go back to the pool area for lunch we get seats there. If we go in the lazy river we move to seats there. I would imagine that us what most people do, which means seats are always becoming available. We are a family of 5 so we get 2 seats at a minimum then when we have lunch (pretty much every day either poolside or beachside) we try to spread out to 3 seats.

The pool area is so far removed from the beach I cannot see why anyone would try to retain seats at the alternate. Same as the lazy river - the entries are all quite a distance from the pool areas.

OK, that's cool. Go ahead & call me self centered if that's what flips your switch. I never said anything about the world owing me anything. Not sure where THAT came from but whatever. I still say if I have EVERY INTENTION of returning to the pool as soon as I can after stepping away for a bit then I don't feel like I should have to PACK up and MOVE. Why is grabbing a bite to eat at the Ulu Cafe for lunch any different than going to the lagoon / beach for 45 min. or an hour or running into the laundry room to move a load of laundry from the washer to the dryer and then run it back to your villa later when it's done? Would you really pack up everything and move 5 or 6 times during the course of the day if you were going back & forth from the pool to the lagoon or to the laundry room multiple times throughout the day? I really don't think my DH and DS would tolerate it very well either. I can see it now. I'm hungry Mom. OK, let's pack up all of our stuff and we'll go to the cafe and then we'll come back and hawk around and leer over other guests for new chairs after our sandwich. Yeah. That's not gonna fly so good with my guys. Would it make you feel any better if I said that we'll plan to split up and eat and swim in shifts so that we can leave 1 family member "on guard" at the chairs at all times?! If that is what makes you happy then that's what we'll do. Just to make everyone else happy. We will split up and we will guard our chairs with our lives.

Like I said in a previous post, it's not like I am planning on going down at 7:00 am to put my stuff down to hold a chair while I am going to the North Shore for surf lessons with the intention of not even getting there until 10 or 11:00. That is NOT what I'm planning to do. I do tend to MOVE arouond tho during the day.

RE: renting a cabana - ummmm, well, last year we had plans to rent one for 2 days then THIS year they raised the prices and we can't really afford it so much (had lots of residual medical bills from DS's 2 lung surgeries because of COURSE they had to fall under 2 diff. deductible years plus I then had about $3k in unexpected car repair bills since April. Minor things to keep it up & running like exploding radiators bad heater cores & stuff. So I'm really not feeling the urge to splurge too much this go around - although I DID go ahead & reserve 1 for our last day in hopes we can swing it. However when I called to reserve it they said we were already like 5th on the list. Since they are assigned first come / first served they couldn't guarantee if we can get one of the 4 in the main pool area even tho that's what I requested (the 4 people already on the list ahead of us hadn't put in a request for a specific location so they don't know what they'll want but they get first dibs). So we will have to wait until we are there to see what happens with that to see if we can get one of the main ones or not. DS is only 17 so he isn't old enough to go to the adult area ones and I'm not going to spend $300+ to sit in the little kids splash play area if that's all that's available. That's just not a practical use of what spending money we have. So the whole cabana thing at Aulani may just be a bust for us this year. I am planning to get one at the Sheraton on Maui for our last day once we get over there - they take reservations at 30 days out and they're only $75 / day (which sure beats the heck out of $300+). But our flight home that night is at like 9:30 or something like that so it will be worth it to have a "home base" for the day.

OK, NEXT? Who else wants to sling some mud at me?

First off, because someone disagrees with you does not mean they are slinging mud at you.
I agree with most other posters. If you are going to your room with laundry or to a restaurant to eat or to the beach or wherever, you should move your things from the chairs. I agree that not doing so is rude and self centered and leads to the kind of problem being discussed.
Just my opinion

No mud here!!!

If the policy is that your chair will be flagged after 1 hour of vacancy then what does it matter where you go for that hour. Ulu, Ama Ama, pool, beach or even the bathroom. It doesn't matter!

Annie- I hope you have a really nice time at Aulani- Relax and Enjoy- the time went quickly- I miss it already

See here goes the name calling again. Self centered and rude. You don't know me from Adam so please, refrain from the nastiness. I was trying so hard to just ignore all of the other posters who think THEY are the only ones who do no wrong and who seem to think that they don't do anything that might annoy someone else. But then there ya go - dredging it up again. Seriously. Just DROP it already.

I WILL go and I WILL enjoy this resort despite all the name calling. And I will leave "my stuff" while I eat or while I wander down to the beach for a dip if I wish to. If the rule is to return to your chair within an hour then I WILL be back within the friggin' hour even if it means stressing me out over watching the clock. And if I think that I WON'T be able to make it back within the hour then I will leave my DH or my DS there to guard the "stuff" and the &*#$(*@*%&$^#)* chairs. It was never my intention to operate outside of the "one hour rule". Not sure how that ever got insinuated. I do not feel that I should have to schlep all of my stuff around the resort like a homeless bag lady if I am at the pool for 6 or 7 hours one day and I want a change of scenery for whatever reason it might be (a dip in the lagoon, drink, lunch, a go-around the lazy river or to take 15 minutes to move my laundry, WHATEVER). We obviously disagree on this so just rest assured that my family will operate within the rules. Period. Done. Over. Adios. Ciao.

Maybe the mods should lock this thread now?!

Thank you. You are right and I'm glad to see someone else sees things the same way (although you risk a flogging for it). It DOESN'T matter where I or anybody else goes while we're not at our chairs. Nobody should give a rats patoot what I am doing while I am enjoying my resort day as long as we are primarily USING the chairs.

Hopefully whenever we go the resort won't be packed to capacity so the chair thing won't be an issue.

Sees the tone of this thread is trending south...let's please keep the discussion in the realm of nice.
