August use year

I just purchased a BWV contract with an August use year. I will mix trips between spring and fall. I would typically avoid the hoilidays and vacation weeks. I felt a summer use year would give me a good bit of booking flexibility as I don't think I will ever travel to Disney between June and Sept. Is my thinking sound? How quickly do the most popular resorts fill. Also I enjoy WLV as much as any of the more popular resorts. With august use year, will I generally have some good choices of properties that are in close proximity to parks?

If the earliest you would travel is October then October would be your best UY.

Ideally you want a UY that is at the beginning of when you normally travel. If you mostly travel in spring I would have picked a spring UY.

UY will have no change in what is available at the 7 month window.

I am now confused

But ut if Oct was my use year, wouldn't I get less priority booking. Also if I wanted to go away in october, and octber is my use year, wouldn't I only be able to make ressies for october on october 1st of the same year? Don't my unused points expire sept 31 if october is my use year?

where you own affects what property you can book. you can book your home resort at 11 months out.

as the other poster said, UY month has nothing to do with what is available.

october is a better UY but august should work fine for the most part. just remember that an august UY's banking window closes on march 31 - so that if you have a reservation in april or may and have to cancel after march 31, those pts are stuck and cannot be banked forward to the next use year - they will expire on july 31 of that year whether you can rebook something or not...

As dzorn has said, your Use Year does NOT impact when you can call to make DVC resort reservations : for your Home Resort you can always call to book as early as 11 months before check in date you'd like :

~ 11 months through 7 months plus 1 day before desired check-in date is always your Owner's Priority Booking Window at your Home Resort. So if your HR is BWV and you would like to book Christmas Day 2012 call on Jan. 25 2012 (when your 11 month Owner's Priority Booking Window opens) to Member Services to book Dec. 25 2012 AT BWV.

~ 7 months or less until the check in date you'd like you may call to book at any other DVC resorts that aren't your HR.

The idea behind picking the 'ideal' UY is chose one where your travel will occur during first 8 months of UY so if you have to cancel 30 days prior to check in then you would still be within banking window and could bank any Current year's points into the next, upcoming UY ~and~ if you had borrowed & banked points in the reservation you would still have at least 4 months before the UY ends to re-use borrowed & banked points. But, of course, as years pass your travel habits may change so what is a good UY for you now may not be down the road. So many here will also tell you not to be overly concerned with which UY to pick.

There is an excellent thread here by Moderator CarolMN called "Understanding Use Year" that can help you better understand UY.

Best wishes :goodvibes

nope.

you could book your home resort for oct 1, 2011 as early as nov 1, 2010...you could use any combination of banked 2010 pts, current 2011 pts (they are "current" because you are using them for a stay in your 2011 use year, even if you are calling prior to oct 1, 2011) and borrowed 2012 pts.

read that again: you can call in november 2010 and book a reservation for 11 months ahead using borrowed 2012 pts if you wanted.

the first thing to consider when planning a reservation is "what use year does it fall into?" (assuming an oct UY): if you are booking a reservation for oct 2011, that is in your 2011 use year...if you are booking for a trip for september 2011, that is actually in your 2010 use year (which might cause problems if you needed to cancel - but a nonissue otherwise).

more info on use year is here if you need it:

If you were to avoid June and July and go mostly in spring or fall, August should be fine as a use year except for possibly May trips. That simply has to do with the risk of cancellation. If you have to cancel you want to do so at a time that allows you to bank any current points in the reservation and you must do that by the end of the 8th month of your use year which is end of March for an August use year. Thus cancelling an mid May trip in early April could leave you unable to bank points and thus being required to use them by end of July.

As noted, otherwise, use year has nothing to do with when you can call to reserve which is always 11 months out at home resort and 7 at others. In other words, remove the concept of your use year completely from your mind when determining when you can call to make a reservation. Whether you can get another resort at 7 months out will depend on which one, which type of rooms, and time of year.

Ahhhhhh. Thanks so much for clearing that up. I like that much better than the way I thought it worked. My august use year should be fine then because when the crumb snatchers are gone, I could envision traveling in september some years.

Thanks all.

crumb snatchers :confused3

I've never heard this term and sincerely hope you do not mean the definition that popped up on goole, but there is always plenty of children at WDW year round.

I think the poster was trying to say that when their own kids are gone (out of the house and on their own) that they could see themselves traveling in September, however, I could be wrong.

HAHAHAHA. Yes I was talking about when my own children are off the payroll.

Yes sometimes goole does let you down, becasue the first term :scared1:

I cannot wait till they are off the payroll either or at least out of school and can travel different times of year.
