I'm curious if all the DVC Use Years have the same # of potential total points to buy? I ask this because I have an August Use year, and have come to believe its a tough Use Year to find for older resorts. Would love to hear what you think....Thanks.

There is nothing that requires each use year month to have the same or even close to the same number of points. The way it works is as follows: each resort is broken down into numerous "units." That is not a room, which is officially called a "vacation home.". Instead, a "unit" is usually a group of rooms (at OKW, it is each building). Each unit is given a use year month when it is declared into DVC for selling. Generally, the number of points in a use year month should ultimately work out to be fairly close to each other for any particular resort, but that is mainly the product of Disney's marketing scheme rather than any requirement. When a resort begins to sell, a certain number of units are declared for selling, as time progresses more units are added for sale, etc. Particularly with the older resorts, Disney's marketing method was to usually sell a use year that began three to five months before the month of sale, e.g., people buying in April or May, typically were sold a December use year (there is no November or January use year); in June, they would be selling mainly February. Thus, as the first year of sales progressed, they would add more units with more use years; the second year, they would add more units and repeat the progression of use years. Also, Disney follows a rule that it will sell add-ons to a member only in the use year the member already has. That sale progression and the desire to allow for add-ons in all use years essentially dictates that Disney will try to spread the points throughout the various use year months fairly evenly -- it maximizes its sales ability that way. Thus, your suspicion that August may be a light use year is probably incorrect but it is possible it could have somewhat fewer points than some other use years

FWIW, an August UY is a good choice for those who normally vacation in the Sep - Dec timeframe. It could very well be that many of them purchased August specifically for that reason, and therefore are less inclined to sell it.

I have both a June UY and an August UY contract. If I ever decided to sell anything, it would be one of the June contracts, not the August one.

We purchased the June UY at OKW, in June 1993. I assumed at that time we got that use year simply because that's the same month we purchased.

We purchased the August UY resale, in 1997.

We also have an August UY and getting additional points has been tought but that could just be bad luck.

Thanks for the insight. When we bought our first contract (Aug UY) we did not know a great deal about the Use Year thing...... We travel mostly in the spring and summer right now, but since we rarely (if ever) cancel vacations, it has not mattered to us. I suppose we have to hope we see some additional Aug contracts in the future....maybe as AKV and BLT come online. And as our girls get older.....maybe there is a Christmas trip in our future. Who knows!

Thanks for the information.
