August trip

How crazy am I for going to Disney in August? We've gone twice in October, twice in December and once in June (we nearly killed each other)..but it's getting increasingly more difficult to keep the kids out of school. (the youngest will be in High School and they're getting really strict, and I'd like to avoid the holiday rush.) So...since we've been to Disney several times already, with at least one trip every year for the last 5 years..I'm thinking we don't need to do Commando style at the parks anymore. I figure, maybe go to the parks early in the morning, when it gets hot, go back to the hotel, swim, whatever, then go back to the parks after it cools down some. Plus I'm extending our vacation from the usual 8 days to 10 days, I figure we can take things at a much more leisurely pace since we'll be there longer.

But honestly...those of you that have been there in August before, am I crazy? LOL And I was used to the 3:30 p.m. downpours when we were there in June...is it like that in August? (I'm also keeping my fingers crossed for free dining...like a dummy I didnt book our August trip while I was there in December...if I had....it included free dining!!!!)

TIA

We went for free dining last August and it was hot, but I think it was better than I anticipated. We have been numerous times, so like you, we weren't stressed over having to see/do everything. The kids handled things well and we did go back to the hotel to swim/shower/nap in the afternoon. We went prepared with lots of water, spray fans and neck wraps. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for free dining as well. If it is offered, we'll go back again.

Shell

ps-yes, be prepared for those afternoon downpours!

My family, which consists of Me,DW and daughters 8&6, stayed at Disney last August with free dining. We had a great time. I don't think there is a difference between 90+ in June and 90+ in August. However, August is the beginning of hurricane season. I planned lots of pool breaks with early morning and evening touring itineraries. You need to take it slow in August.

:thumbsup2

I went late Aug last year (one week before Labor Day) and it was great. The crowds were very very low never waited more than 15 min for almost all rides and for the most part waits were between 5-10 min. It did rain in the afternoons and it rained one entire day while we were there because of the hurricane but we went to the parks anyway and enjoyed no wait for just about every ride.

I am planning a trip for this August during the same time. I enjoyed it so much. I am from NY and the heat did not bother me as much as I thought it would. I did however have a sun shade for my son and a fan that attached to his stroller. I bought mister fans for DH and I and one that attached to the stroller for the person who pushed and one that went around the neck (5 total), I guess you could say I was over prepared but people here on the Dis made me afraid of the heat. We ended up only using the fan for the baby and left the rest in the bottom of the stroller) People did seem very hot so I think it might have been just us:) .

I've gone twice in August and am going back again in August this year. We aren't commando tourists. We do mornings in the park and then hang out at the pool for the afternoon.

When we bought our house, one of the major selling points for me was the central air conditioning (we live in MA, too). I mention that because I think it indicates how much being too hot gets to me.....and I am fine at Disney in August. There are plenty of places to cool off, and if you're taking it at a leisurely pace, it's fine. I'd rather be hot down there for a few days than hot up here with no Epcot, MK, MGM, AK, or Stormalong Bay to make it worthwhile:).

I live in Florida. I think August is hotter than the rest of the summer, and the Humidity can be horrible, but with the right clothes and a misting fan, and a break mid day I think you will be fine. Lots of Sunscreen too!!!!

BillyFeat.....Hurricaine season starts in June and goes through Nov. I am beginning to think the Hurricaines are better than what it is doing to our insurance and property taxes in FLorida. You can barely own a home.

I think I better forget about having any good hair days then huh? LOL

What is a good Hair Day??? :rotfl:

Answer your question?

August is the hotest month in Florida and in the parks it is even hotter, but if you come at the end of August the attendance levels are lower. Florida kids head back to school mid August.

August also has very high humidity this time of year. So much for good hair days. We who live here have lots of pony tails or clips. Also be aware the closer you get to September the more likely a hurricane will occur. September is the most active month for hurricanes.

Given all that, if that is the only time to go to WDW I would go anyway. The family time and experience is well worth the adversities you might encounter. After all, if it was all THAT bad nobody would be living in Florida in the summer.:yay:

We went the second to last week of August last summer. Yes, it was hot. Truthfully, I didn't think it was nearly as unbearable as people warned us that it would be. You are constantly in and out of air conditioning. And like many others have said we packed water bottles and Gatorade and we were good to go. I totally understand the school thing. That's why we are going in April, yes with the Easter crowds, and again in August.

Our next trip is Aug 22-28. We're from NJ and school doesn't start until after Labor Day. DD is a teacher and DGD will start HS, so there's no thought of not going to school. We opted for this time frame based on DIS information about lower crowds. We'll just deal with the heat - hey, it's WDW!

Also did the last week of august and will do it again this year. I know it is hurricane season, but will take chance. lowlow crowds, and if it was not free dining i think it would have been even less croweded... In epcot one day the cast membe rsaid,"take not you will never see this is disney again, Mickey was waiting for people to come take pics with him, there was no crowed in disney. even at night the pool was to cool for me. I cant wait untilla gust.

Our last 2 trips to Disney have been mid to late Aug, and this year we are going Aug. 16-24. Yes, it is hot, but it is hot here too in Aug. (we live 20 miles north of Boston). Where would you rather be hot !? Like all previous posters have pointed out, there are plenty of places to cool off, and we look forward to the daily rain ! Try it, you'll love it ! Good luck !:thumbsup2

We love late August. We end our summer with a bang and then off to school and the hectic year. We used to travel in late June and I honestly remember it being very hot twice on those trips, so I guess you just don't know........
The rain/showers haven't really phased us, we just whip out the rain gear and we're off......it's usually short in duration anyway.
Getting in on the free dining last time was a bonus!
We're already booked for the same time this year and were lucky enough to get the free dining for this August as well (we got in on the dec promo, a surprise trip by the hubby for my b/day).
We can't wait!!!
Bring your sunscreen, drink your fluids and remember.....
LIFE IS GOOD.....BE HEALTHY.....BE HAPPY AND ENJOY DISNEY ANY TIME OF YEAR! Good Luck!

ARe they offering free dining for august 07 yet?

We go every year in August for the the same reason - school! Remember that everything is air conditioned and it is easy to escape the heat if you need to. Last year, it was not as hot as previous years. Plan to use the pool accordingly and not go crazy. We have never had a problem. I don't find it any hotter there than it can be here in August. Drink plenty of water. One thing we did last time that was perfect was we planned a last seating breakfast at the GF on the day we were at MK. We hit the park when it opened left for breakfast which was more like brunch then went back to the park because it was raining and everyone was leaving. We did the whole MK in about 4-5 hours. It was great. It is all what you make it and how you adjust your attitude. Pop into a shop if you are really hot and cool off and look around. You will be fine.
