August Rain

With the older kids just buy plenty of rain ponchos and plan on staying as long as there is no thunder or heavy rain, your husband and little one can go back and relax and nap. I am not sure if poly has a community hall where the kids can do crafts or play games. Maybe search out those rides with longer indoor lines so you aren't totally outdoors. I would plan on having some proper foot wear for wet weather -- nothing is worse than having totally soaked shoes that you have to wear the next day.

Hopefully, if there is rain it will be short and sweet.

We typically go to WDW in October so rain isn't usually much of a concern. But this coming year we'll be going in mid-August due to school schedules. I always wear Croc flip flops at WDW... all day... every day. They are the most comfortable shoes to wear and are breathable. But the rest of my family all wear tennis shoes. Is that the best thing to wear in August when they could easily get soaked from rain? Are they all better off switching to some type of Croc flip flop or sandals that can dry out quickly?

I think the most important thing when it comes to footwear in WDW is that it should be comfortable. You walk miles and miles and miles every day without even noticing, so it's really important to be wearing comfortable shoes that will keep your feet, knees and back feeling good. Sandals in my opinion are easier for the rain and personally make it easier for me to withstand the heat, but DH and DM don't do well walking such far distances in sandals, so they wear gym shoes and only switch to sandals if the gym shoes haven't dried (though we try to bring to pares of gym shoes so that one is always dry).

I was there in August during the hurricane, and to be honest, it created the best Disney experience. If it is raining hard during PM extra magic hours, don't wimp out on going to the park. I convinced my family to go to MK during pm extra magic hours in torrential rain and it was the highlight of our vacation because there was probably under 100 people in the park and rides like Astro Orbiter and Aladdin became thrill rides.

As others have said, the bad news is that torrential rain IS likely at some point during your trip, but the good news is it is usually short lived. Be prepared with ponchos. I highly suggest switching to shoes like flip flops that can get wet and stay comfortable. Walking around in soaked sneakers all day is not comfortable. Also, COVER YOUR STROLLER. This June, I went into the Mexico pavilion in Epcot under sunny skies with no sign of rain. When we came out, it was raining in sheets. My stroller of course was uncovered (and is made of fabric, it wasn't one of the plastic rentals). This was a real problem because I lost a dry, comfortable place to transport DS, who wasn't walking yet so really relied on the stroller. Most rides, shows, and attractions are indoors so really you just need to deal with staying dry and comfortable as you dart from one ride to the next. I wouldn't hesitate to go again in the summer. I have been in June, July, and September. While we dealt with some rain each trip, it was totally manageable.

Thanks everyone, I am feeling reassured. We were so spoiled weather and crowd wise by going in early May in 2014, but now we're tied to the school schedule (my oldest son would not do well with being pulled out of school).

Our family does best with a plan, so I think I just need a list of things to do in the afternoon if it's too rainy for the pool. Suggestions like go for a ride on the monorail to the other resorts are really helpful. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

I have gobe the last week of August for a few years now. I use to take Afternoon park breaks. This past August I changed it up a bit. I decided to take pool time in the morning/early afternoon instead of later in the afternoon because, at that time, there's high chance of showers. (If there's lightning, the pools close.) Then I headed out to the park each day at about 2 and stayed until closing. I don't care if it rains while I'm in the parks. I just take an Umbrella and go about the day. Have to make the most of every day at Disney.
