Last year we went to disney the first week of October because of the free dining plan. We had already been there in April, but it seemed like a great opportunity to go again at a reasonable price. We had a great time even though it was a rainy week. I booked it again this year for the same week because of the free dining plan again, but I'm thinking about changing it to the end of August. I called last night and it's available. I'm sure many people will question me about going in October with 2 school age children. My 14 year old son is autistic and does'nt do well in the heat and crowds, he attends school for 6 weeks during the summer so I don't feel bad having him miss a week of school to go to his most favorite place. My 12 year old has always had A's & B's and last year his teachers gave him makeup work ahead of time and his social studies teacher gave him an assignment to make a collage of World Showcase. I am a teacher's aide which means I also have to take off school, last year I took my 3 personal days a sick day and a day without pay because it was just before the Columbus Day holiday. I felt a little funny about taking a week off so early in the school year but I had no problem getting it approved. It turned out that someone else also took the same week to go on a business trip with her boyfriend and another aide took off the following week to go to disney with her family while her husband was on a convention there. I have'nt been to disney in the summer since the 70's is it to unbearably hot? I know that is rains more in summer months but is that just a downpour and then it dries up? or is it constantly raining? I'm sure there will be many mixed opinions on this so fire away!

Welcome to the DIS!

We LOVE going in August, but if your son does not do well in the heat you should not do it.

Morning temperatures will be near 80 with humidity very high. Afternoons will go into the 90s and the humidity will be relentless.

Thunderstorms are a given in the afternoon. It will usually pour for anywhere between 15 minutes and a couple of hours, then it will stop and the humidity will gt even higher.

If you do go in August, go after the 14th not just because of free dining, but also because many schools open on the 14th. The second half of August is the least crowded time of the summer.

We usually go to Disney in the fall or spring, my son gets a disability pass so he does'nt have to stand in the heat to much we keep him hydrated and go to some indoor rides or shows in between the outside rides and attractions, besides being autistic he has epilepsy. He has'nt had a seizure in months, but sometimes a combination of lack of sleep, not eating enough, or heat could bring one on. I thought if we took these precautions along with a break for a mid day swim weather permitting that maybe we could pull it off????

Well we love going in late September or October. The weather is so much better (other than the occasional hurricane) and the crowds are not really there. We always take the kids out of school and they make up all of their work going down and coming home in the car. So far as long as the teachers know ahead of time then they don't have a problem with it. The crowds are better and the weather are better later. The free dining plan goes until check in of Sept. 30. We are checking in Sept. 30 and staying a week and we got the free dining plan. This is our second year doing that and we love it, it really saves us alot of money. Go later that earlier if you can. If your kids are not as hot and bothered by crowds then your vacation will be better!!!!

Where are you planning to stay? We have reservations at the Pop for the same dates as you, we also stayed there last year at the same time and did the free dining plan, what a great deal. We've stayed at the Pop twice it's our favorite value resort!! Linda

If you when early Oct, you will be ok in late August.

I just switched my Columbus Day Week trip to Aug 13th-22nd. I was going to take my 13,12,10 and 5 year out of school for 3 days, plus have my 12 year old miss Cheer games and comp practices all for the love of Disney. When the free dining came out I did pro's and con's and August won out!! I went in August once and vowed I would never go again due to the rain and humidity but here we go. I really didnt like the idea of missing school, you can miss so much in just days and will rain stop us from having fun in Disney????? Whatever you decide I am sure you will have a blast!!!

Have Fun!!!! :cheer2:

We miss the days when notifying the teachers meant it would all be okay. Once the kids hit junior high it gets harder and harder to take them out. Wthout the teacher's manual, I would struggle to help them. There are days now that I wish I could sit through the classes so that I would be able to be a bigger help. While summer can be a nightmare, the homework woes are worse!!!! Plus, you are at the tail end of summer. Florida kids are back in school...so you might be lucky!!!

October is our favorite time of the year to go. MNSSHP, Food and Wine Festival, the temperate weather, better deals all play a part. Now that my DS is entering K this fall, school will obviously play a big factor. :(
