Just returned from 8/3 Western C (made a few college visits on way home for 17 year old DD). Had a blast. Our dining servers David and Anita made every evening very special and even when DH and I went to Palos, they made sure the kids had a special evening!

Key West we did the Conch Train - nice since neither of us had ever been there - got the lay of the land then we just walked around. Next time, we may skip the Train and rent one of those little bittty cars - look like golf carts with style.

Grand Cayman went snorkeling = 7 mile beach. Kids and I were not keen on stingrays so didn't do that one but heard great things. We stopped at a couple of good spots, lots of varied coral and pretty fish. The beach was very nice, kids and I talked about just staying there and taking taxi home later but it started raining. Rained for a while but we just shopped and finally decided that getting wetter was not a bad thing (philosophy: every ride is a water ride when it is raining!)

Cozumel - so many things we wanted to do, so little time. Finally, because DH really wanted to we did the Tulum ruins excursion. It was very informative, our guide was Mayan and was very knowledgable and proud of his heritage. ONE NOTE = children under 10 or 11 SHOULD NOT go on this trip unless they have indicated a clear desire to learn about Mayan culture (and maybe done a little research). We had some young ones and they really just wanted to be at the beach. I felt sorry for them because it was hot and the day was long. On the other hand, their whining kept me from hearing everything the guide was saying, so it was a little "lose=lose". Overall, good excursion though. When we got back to ship kids had to hussle to get quick shower and make it to the Teen Cruise. They had a good time except that the electricity on the catamaran cut out about half way through the cruise so there was no music from then on.

On sea days I did the Disney Entertaining Series and DH did the Disney Navigators Series. I learned about fusion cooking, he learned about the ship. I also attended a couple of exercise classes and worked out in the gym. I did not do any of the Spa stuff although the rainforest looked tempting.

Also, on sea days, I enjoyed laying out by the adult pool. I saw in a post on the discussion board that someone was *complaining* about folks who get out real early and put towels on the chairs to save them and then never come back. First day I looked every chair had 2 towels (back and seat). I thought perhaps Cruise people had put them out for us, so when I saw a chair with no shoes, book, beach bag, etc. identifying that it was taken, I took it. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it) Anyway, there is a policy about not saving seats in the theatre, etc. so I'm sure it applies to the pools, too!

Castaway Cay was great. DD wanted to parasail but we called too late, so she just hung out on teen beach. We rented snorkle geat and bikes. DH and I biked around to the adult beach (better food and beautiful beach), then hung out on the family beach so the kids could find us. Snorkeling at CC was OK but not the same as other islands.

A little excitement on Thursday pm - ship stopped to render assistance to Cuban refugees, ended up taking them on board and turning them over to coast guard. Sad situation, those who were outside when Magic approached said the Cubans were trying to wave her off (they knew consequences). They had been without food/water for a few days - two young kids in boat.

Checking next year's school calendar to see when we can go again (maybe for 2 weeks this time).

Glad you had a "magical trip". We also had David and Anita as servers on the 6/7/02 sailing - weren't they great.

After I posted above, I thought of one more thing I should have mentioned. We first sailed Magic 4 years ago when kids were younger. We spent a fortune in Shutters because everyday there were cute pictures of them and a few of DH and I or whole family. This cruise, we were pleased to see that Shutters offered a package deal to "pre-buy" a number of photos at a discount. We considered the 15 package (2 or so a day) but settled on the 10 when we learned that you could later upgrade.

What we had not counted on was that both our kids were teens now, involved in the teen program, and apparently, the photographer doesn't know about it or has been banned. We truly had a hard time picking out the "least worse" 10 pictures - we got one of our son that he hates, we got the one of us embarking that I hate (we look like pack horses). Additionally, the "background" pictures we had made don't count toward these 10 - you have to buy them separately.

My advice would be if you don't have little ones, skip the Shutters deal. Even if you end up paying full price for 4-5 good pictures, it will be less than the 10 package.

Still loved the cruise but wish I'd known!

Thanks for sharing your trip with us.

I have a quick question. What are those little carts that you are talking about in Key West and where can you rent them? Nice to here a positive report (well, 10 years old and over) about the Tulum Ruin tour. Hubby and I are planning that one in January. What time did you get back to the ship in Cozumel after the Tulum tour?

Thanks!
Tina

The little carts were actually some type of car - looked like rounded off golf carts. Some were 2 seaters, some 4 seaters, all open. They had signs on the back "Rent Me". We did not inquire where.

We got back from Tulum a little after 5 - maybe 5:15.

Glad you enjoyed the report.

thanks very much for the report!
appreciate all tips and treasures!

Thanks, TeensMom!

We'll have plenty of time to change for dinner on the town at Pancho's and then hopefully mini-golf.

Plan, plan, plan...
Tina :)

So glad to hear you had a great time... I was wondering if the kids had enough to keep them busy on board ship. I will be traveling with two 17 y/o's June 14, '03 on the 7 night Eastern Magic. My concern is that they will feel "too grown up" for common grounds yet not able to get into "adult areas". My DD will actually be celebrating her 18th Birthday Thursday night, June 19th, the same as the Captain's Gala.

I think there will be plenty for your kids to do. My kids are VERY different. My 17 yr daughter is "Miss Social" - into every activity, leading the pack. She made a cadre of friends almost immediately and they hung out all week - midnight swims with the Common Grounds group, teen dance in Studio Sea, played "Gotcha", did a photo treasure hunt, talent show, went on the Teen Cruise, etc. My 14 yr son is quieter, more laid back. He spent a lot of time in Common Grounds playing nintendo or up in ESPN zone. His sister's group often asked him to accompany them (which I thought was VERY admirable), and sometimes he did. About mid-cruise, he hooked up with another boy his age and they hung out some. Both kids went with us on excursions in all 3 ports then hung out at the teen beach on CC. They both brought back addresses & IMs for several kids to keep in touch.

we were also on the 8/3 sailing of the Magic. it was our first trip. our DD (5 1/2) had a fantastic time with us.. and with the Oceaneers group-- particularly on CC. Shoot.. I wanted to be 5 again, and be a member of the Oceaneers Club @ Scuttles Cove.

we discovered that the sit down dining did not work for us. Our DD had NO interest in slower service, etc. but the Topsiders dinner service worked very well for our family. (and it was much quieter!)

can't wait to go again next summer! already have our reservations, and are counting down!

I thought perhaps Cruise people had put them out for us, so when I saw a chair with no shoes, book, beach bag, etc. identifying that it was taken, I took it. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it)

:smooth: Too funny!!! Do you suppose they sprinkled a little "Pixie Dust" on the towels for us, too? Enjoyed your trip report. Thanks for posting one. :)

My teens: 12, 15 and 18 had a blast. We never saw them. Encourage them to go to Common Grounds and they will definitely meet people.:jester:
