august 2013 codes for rental cars?

There were so many Impalas in the Alamo row last summer I almost didn't have another choice Gina and Foxberry. There was one minivan we went right over to, and then were told we couldn't take it because the keys were locked in it:rolleyes1. There were 2 Nissan Altimas and about 20 Impalas. That was it. YMMV, but with Alamo your chances are pretty good. I am sitting at $181 with the Alamo Insiders discount and the UnitedMileage plus coupon (but the Visa coupon gives the same $30 off). My rental is 10 days so yours would be even lower.

Could I ask a huge favour of you? Pretty please? :flower3:

I am coming no where near your awesome Alamo rates when I run my dates and times. DH would LOVE to go with Alamo again as we've had two great rentals with them on previous trips.

Just to be sure I am not doing something wrong (as I'm coming up with $300-400 rates), could you run my dates and times with your code and coupon to compare?

Picking up August 23rd at 7 pm, dropping off August 31st at 10:30 am.

If you could let me know what rate you come up with, that would be awesome!!! I will feel like a real idiot if you come up with $175 or less :crazy2: .

Sure.. let me try!:goodvibes

Pigletto, you convinced me...I changed to a Standard/Full Size at Alamo - grand total $202, 8/22 to 9/2, Costco & Visa coupons.

Gina.. it's your drop off!! I get over $400 for you with your dates. If I change you to a Sunday September 1st drop off at 10:30 a.m., it changes your rate to $161.38 for a Standard. So hundreds and hundreds less to keep it an extra day:headache:.
That's insane!!!
I wonder if you booked and called later to say you wanted to drop a day off the reservation if they'd let you keep the rate? Or what happens if you return it early? This is ridiculous!

Yay! I hope there's an Impala now:rolleyes1. Seriously though, I was worried last summer because we had 5 people and needed the Impala for the trunk space. I was told over and over not to worry by posters here. And sure enough there were lots of them when I got there.

Ok Gina. I played with the Alamo site for awhile and this is what I figured out. Logging in as an Insider and using the Visa coupon I get this for you

Standard for 149.79.

8pm is the point at which it changes from over $400 to the lower rates:confused3. Now I am going to look around and see what happens if you drop off a car 10 hours early. I imagine it will be fine but I am sure I can find threads where someone has had to before.:)

ETA) From a little bit of research it will change the rate back to the higher rate. Some people had success calling beforehand but it's because moving your drop off to 8 qualifies as a Saturday night keep, but moving it back earlier doesn't so it sends it sky high. Sorry :(

My dates are 8-30 thru 9-7--- tried it picking up at Sanford airport and returning there. Picking up at noon dropping off at 1. The rate we were quoted was almost $400. Too much for a standard! So right now I opted to pick up and Sanford- drop off the next day at disneys car center and pick it up the day before we leave and drop at Sanford for under $100. This is thru Alamo. Any other suggestions?

Just got my Alamo reservation $10 lower, now sitting at $139 for 8/31-9/8 (10:00 am pick, 7:30 PM drop). I used insider member and $30 visa code

Last week I booked a Standard at Alamo 8/17-8/27 pickup 5pm MCO and dropoff 4pm MCO for $316 using Costco contract ID and $30 visa code. I checked this morning with the same ID/code and it's up to $464. I was hoping it would go down, not up! :confused3

I was not being defensive at all.....I was only listing the facts as I know them.

I am curious, though, as to why your only three posts have been to argue or dissuade people from using the KLM Flying Blue discount with National. Particularly when it sounds as if you haven't attempted to use the code yourself at any point.

I will reiterate again.....if you don't feel comfortable using the code, then don't use it. As of yet, you haven't been able to provide me with enough of your "research" to have me worried about using it myself.

Okay, I'll address your curiosity query. My stating of the facts pertaining to the KLM code in question in my "only three posts" is just that, nothing more. Not trying to "dissuade" anyone - just listing what I found and as a result I won't be using that code. I originally searched both KLM's and National's site hoping to find the code but didn't. Personally,I'd love to be sharing any discount codes that could help save a DIS member some money. However, I'd hate to think that I was somehow responsible for "problems" encountered by another DIS member for giving out a company's "private" code that had somehow found it's way into the public domain. Peace and worry free travels!

I managed to get $196.40, all in, was $124.76 but add the fees and taxes. 11 days at the end of August from Dollar. Pick up and drop off at MCO. I'm quite pleased with that.

We got an Impala last year from Alamo when it was just the 4 of us (MIL is coming along this year to make 5). I just didn't take note if there were lots of them available. We shall see!

Thank you so much for trying :thumbsup2 . At least I know now that its not something I'm doing.....'cause for a while, I was beginning to wonder :rolleyes1 .

DH still really, really, REALLY wants me to keep that SUV rental, so that's probably what we'll end up doing. He likes the idea of all the space, he likes the idea of us having the free extra driver with our Emerald Club membership, and being able to select our own vehicle at the time of pick up. But I'm still going to hold off on cancelling the Dollar ressie for a while, just in case we change our mind. And who knows? Maybe the Alamo rates for my dates and times will even themselves out within the next few weeks.

...
Many, many folks here on the Disboards have indicated they used the code with no problems at MCO. In fact, I don't think there has been one report of NOT being able to use the code.
...

I get that plenty of people have used the code without being challenged at all. That's not my concern. My concern is whether the LDW will come through in the event of an accident.

While us worriers don't have proof negative that this code isn't intended for people with US driver's licenses, we haven't seen any proof positive that it is.

I've said before (maybe in a another thread) that if anybody with a US drivers license reported that they filed an LDW claim with no problems whatsoever, I'd be completely happy using this code. Not that I expect to have an accident, but if I had to file a claim, I'd prefer to know that I was legitimately entitled to he coverage rather that not knowing that I wasn't.

It's a subtle difference that doesn't matter nearly as much when you're talking about discounts in the rental cost but could matter a whole lot when you're talking about thousands of dollars of damage claims.

And all my credit card coverage requires me to refuse the LDW offered by the the rental car agency - which is impossible with an LDW-included code.

Obviously, use - or don't use - the code depending on your personal comfort level. For the moment, I'm holding a Flying Blue reservation myself. I haven't made up my mind - I'm hoping I won't have to by finding a lower rate with a non-LDW-included code.

It's not unreasonable for people to have concerns about ANY LDW-included code, regardless of whether DISers have used it before. Or reports on FlyerTalk - where they explicitly tell you not to use a code you're not entitled to (wink, wink) and, oh, by the way, don't share it on DISboards because then it will get shut down. (And on FlyerTalk, they are clear on "not entitled to" while here we talk about "personal comfort level.")

Again, I'd be thrilled if somebody posted how to get to the Flying Blue National code by clicking through an official National or FlyingBlue website targeted to US residents. Orphaned web pages found by Googling and web sites with foreign domains (targeted for foreign residents) don't work for me.

Just out of curiosity, because I'm not using the KLM code and it really doesn't matter to me personally, are you not covered for all manner of insurance through your regular every day car insurance? I know we are. I specifically called our provider and have a print out somewhere of what I am specifically covered for with a rental. I honestly don't even know if I am covered by my credit card, and I always refuse additional insurance because I know specifically what I am covered for with my policy with State Farm and it's good for renting a car in the United States.

We are in the same boat as many of you... SUV (minivan) or Impala.

For us, party of 5, we prefer the minivan over other choices. The SUVs are nice, but there really isn't much "trunk space" in anything exept the full sized SUVs and they are more expensive than the 7 passenger minivans. Does anyone else find this to be true, too?

We like having plenty of room to spread out after a long, hot day at the parks!!! However... $277 vs. $678, I just can't justify it. Still holding onto both ressies, but that's a HUGE difference in price. Last year, we got a fantastic rate on an SUV but I don't recall when or why.

We only book with Alamo or National because both my DH and I will drive.

This was exactly our dilemma last year. I needed the space because dd brought a friend. So it ended up being dh and I, two fifteen year olds, and an 8 year old. We all fit well but it wasn't ideal. Especially climbing into a car that had sat in the August sun all day:crazy2:
We didn't have a choice though, as I wasn't paying $400 more.
The only time I've gotten an excellent rate on a minivan was through Expedia.ca for a May trip. Their rates were hundreds lower than anywhere else. But I've never seen that again.

I just looked at what I paid in Dec 2012 - we got a midsized SUV from Alamo for $371 for 13 days. It was some type of weird promotion they had for about a week. It was cheaper than a standard size at that time. It worked very well for our party of 4, but our luggage was a little "tight" (and we only pack for about 6 days - I do laundry as needed).

But this year, my mom is joining us (again). When DSs were younger, a mid sized SUV was fine. But now... not really gonna work. Plus, my mom packs a larger suitcase :confused3 and truck space is much more of an issue.

For those who are considering an Impala versus an SUV... our "backup plan" is to rent an economy for the trip to the resort (turn in at CCC) to have more luggage space. My DH will drive one car and I'll drive the other. We are both Alamo insiders. Then we'll repeat for our return to the airport. Or... take the ME for luggage space.

Anyway, it's crazy... we could rent TWO standard sized cars for the price of the 7 passenger minivan!!!! (and have some $$$ to spare)

Has anyone been able to get a decent rate towards the beginning of Aug? And if so, how????

I am not having any luck :confused3

PU MCO @ 4:30 8/9 drop off MCO 8/22.

I have just under $400 now, but that is way more than I budgeted :sad2:

I can deal, as the rates have sky-rocked since then, but I sure would like to get it down from there. :thumbsup2. I never end up paying that much. :scared:

:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:
