August 2012 Car Rental Thread

Dollar has pretty low base rates right now - my dates has a base rate of 109 with tax comes to 168. no coupons at all.

76892 promo code brings it down a bit lower.

Just got a standard for 8/9-8/14 using this for $83 ($131 after taxes/fees.)

Next closest was Enterprise thru Costco for $156 for an intermediate.

I know it sounds greedy, but I am still hoping it comes down even lower!! I had an AWESOME rate thru Alamo for an 8 day rental in June...

Thanks! Just used this info to book Dollar for my dates, too - 6 nights for $116 all in!

Doesn't sound greedy to me - I'm the same way, I had an even better rate through Alamo for May. $78 for 6 nights mid-size, ended up with a loaded Ford Fusion.

$78 out the door? I think mine was around $90, but I didn't end up keeping the ressie since we were staying YC and had walking access to 2 parks. We used cabs for the few places that the bus would be a PITA to use and it was cheaper than the rental.

But we are at POP this time, so a car is somewhat appealing since we would use it for 3 of 4 parks (would still bus to MK since I don't want to deal with TTC). Not sure I am willing to pay $130 + fuel costs to avoid buses but I would totally do it for $80! :goodvibes

ETA: Anyone know what kind of car I might get with my standard at Dollar? It says Ford Fusion and I was wondering if that's accurate.

Yes - $78 all in, but it looks like you had a couple more days than me. We were at Universal so we wanted a car to get to/from MCO and visit WDW.;)

I know what you mean about being closer to parks - we are at BC in Aug., so may or may not keep the rental with such great access to EP/HS. We like to eat in Celebration, though, so it does help if the price is right.

We booked Dollar's "lock low and go" summer of 2010 - got a Dodge Charger, not sure if that is standard or higher.???

We've got the SOG deal for $75 full size for 6 nights - still hoping for close to that rate out of MCO!:thumbsup2

Thanks! We rented for the first time last November from Alamo and booked a standard for $143 for 8 days. When we arrived we were able to grab a Ford Edge that was parked in the standard row and we were SO happy (I have a tendency to overpack )

But this time its just the 2 of us and 2 suitcases, so I want to keep it small (ish) since I don't want to have to park a big car anywhere.

Score on the Edge!:cool1: LOL about the over-packing - I'm notorious for it, but try to curb my tendencies.

Good luck to all for the August rates to drop like the May rates.

Try playing around with the times. It actually liked it better when I picked up at 10:30 and returned at 11:00 am.

yeah, it's better for me as well if I use those times, however, my flight out of MCO isn't till 7pm that night so 11am isn't going to work. The primary reason we're getting a car is because we have odd flight times (early am arrival and late pm return) . That last day we'll be able to check out of our room, go for breakfast, go to DTD for shopping and a late lunch/early dinner, and then off to the airport.

:(

Just got an email from Priceline. Rented a full size car for 6 days for a total with taxes of $141.76!

Can someone confirm what the local # is for National at the CCC? The one i found doesn't give me an option to speak to anyone.

I got the same email from priceline and the rates for my minivan from Aug 10-Aug 22 were at the lowest $700.00:sad2:

I am glad I have the minivan with Budget for $527.00 but really I was hoping for something in the $200's:scratching

I'm praying they go lower...I feel like a day trader with how much time I am spending checking rental car rates!!:hourglass

These prices are crazy. Yesterday, I jumped on an Alamo rental for our 10 day trip (8/9-19) - intermediate car, MCO, $267 (with taxes included). This was using the Costco id and $35 coupon. At lunchtime today, using those same codes, it had dropped to $206, so I rebooked. Now I just checked again to make sure prices didn't drop again . . . and the same rental is back over $400. I've heard of fluctuations, but this is crazy.

Glad I locked in the $206 rate while it lasted. Dollar and Thrifty still have good rates, but who knows how long they will be around.

Happy hunting everyone!

I know what u mean! I went on to Alamo this morning and found a rate of $145 with the coupon for 10 days but wasnt ready to book. Checked again later and it WELL over $300. Crazy...

Checked the Costco rates when I got home today. They had ALL skyrocketed! My Enterprise car that I had booked was exactly $200 more than this morning. CRAZY :rolleyes2

So glad I booked this morning.

BIG QUESTION: I am holding onto a Dollar rental that is $20 cheaper than the Costco/Enterprise rental but I used the promo code 76892 that someone posted. Does anyone know where this code comes from? I don't want to try & use it & be turned away, but I don't want to tie up multiple reservations, giving the car companies the impression that demand is higher than it is either. So I want to cancel any reservations I won't use. :dance3: I want them to think demand is LOW :thumbsup2 so those prices drop again.

Did you book directly through Alamo & use a Costco ID & a separate $35 coupon? Is this cheaper than the rate that comes up on Costco Travel in your experience? And where do you find the Costco ID? I have only booked through their website.

Thanks :thumbsup2

I usually book through Costco's site too, but someone else suggested I try searching the rates through Alamo with the $35 off. The Costco ID is listed on the car rental home page on Costco's travel website. It is 7014627. The coupon that Costco searches for is a free 1 car class upgrade. The $35 off coupon is a better deal. So I went directly to Alamo and entered the Costco ID and the $35 coupon code. Good luck!

I am so glad I grabbed the Alamo price drop when I saw it the day before yesterday. The rates went back up over 450 for our dates within 24 hours.:crazy2:
Everything is that high or higher.
I can live with 206 for the 11 days.

the Dollar code 76892 rate came from Retailmenot.

Every company is WAY up in price today for me as well.

We decided to come in a day early and that extra day put my Dollar rental from $130 to close to $300 :confused3. Costco Enterprise is $150, more than I want to spend.

So I am back to the drawing board...

Try calling the customer service number. This happened to me in May with Alamo - by the time I added a day, the rates had gone back up so making a new res. or modifying my existing doubled the rate.:scared:

When I called the Insider's number, they added the day at the same daily rate as what I had already booked, rather than the new rate.

I just checked my dates with Dollar, and they are over $100/week more than yesterday. Are you an Express member with Dollar? I suggest joining, then calling the CS number.:thumbsup2

Good luck!pixiedust:
