Renee--
$900 is actually on the cheap side for an underwater housing!
My guess is that you were looking at an Ikelite or another well-known manufacturer of hard underwater housings. I would love to get one for my D70 but it would set me back $1200 and I just don't think I'd get that much use out of it!
Anyway, Ewa-Marine is actually a reputable source for the "underwater bags". I've never used one myself but have looked at them from time to time. Here are a thread from DPReview on the subject:

Also, check out www.wetpixel.com . This site is dedicated to underwater photography. They have a forum dedicated to digital camera underwater housings. http://wetpixel.com/forums/index.php?showforum=1
It's a lot to sift through but I'm sure you'll get some great info.
