Hi wide awake and all,

As some are looking in to vaccines for the trip, I am going to second wide awake and share an email I sent to my family and friends in December. Make your own judgements...but I hope you will read this.

Barbara

Dear Family and Friends,

As you know, I am a speech-language pathologist. For the past few years, I have been working with preschoolers who have been newly diagnosed with autism. Even though most past research does not support the fact that vaccines contribute to the onset of autism, my colleagues and I believe that there must be a relationship. Too many of our little students lost their language and speech immediately following their vaccines. Newer research is pointing toward mercury(Thimerosal) in the vaccine as effecting the neurological systems of children. Some say there were bad batches of vaccines. Either way, please take the time to read the following article regarding mercury in vaccines. It is a very difficult journey that these parents of children with autism embark upon. What a tragedy it would be if autism, learning disabilities, or other health issues are indeed caused by mercury in vaccines.

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=37874

All I ask is that you read this and then make your own educated opinion. As you can see, I feel very passionately about this issue. My little students are beautiful children...they were somehow robbed of a "normal" childhood.

All my best,

Barbara

Hi Gassmandy,
The vaccines are overdone...as a parent to an autistic son I'm well aware of the arguments. I was born in 1961, what I was vaccinated with is a fraction of what my son, DOB 7/8/90 was vaccinated with, and the babies today have an even heavier load. I tell everyone I know to question, get one shot at a time, etc...the extra cost in $$$ or inconvience is well worth it. If I had a child today they would get no vaccines...would be homeschooled to protect them from measles, chicken pox, etc...This is a huge issue, and while at some point I'm certain we'll all be compensated, there isn't enough money in the world to make up for the anguish. I had measles, chickenpox, etc...I turned out just fine. All these kids with sensitivities ??? They're not just fine.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MELINDA (Bmwdsny)!!!

Thanks Wide Awake and Barbara for understanding.
The fact about the vaccines is this--they are MANDATED by the govt. which means doctors are protected by the law if they administer a vaccine and a child has a reaction to it. On the other hand--they aren't so protected if they are a dr. that disagrees w/ vaccines and encourages you not to get them and then something happens to the child. So they are better off to administer them--since reactions are rare--it doesn't matter to the WHOLE as long as it's not their child. Well it was mine and thank God it was moderate and not severe.
The first time she wouldn't stop vomiting and even vomited bile in front of the ER dr. She wouldn't nurse so they had her in the hospital for 2 days with an I.V. to rehydrate her.
The 2nd time (and I asked for no pertussis after the first time) she for about 4-6 hours was hysterical, banging her head, scratching her body, etc. Almost as if she was going crazy and someting was driving her mad! Believe me--as an Air Force brat who moved over seas--I started out for vaccines (God knows I had a lot!!). But come on---let the kids get chicken pox naturally!!! Also--my first pediatrician (who stared me down in the hospital and was adament that the vaccine was NOT the cause of her condition--needless to say--we changed pediatricians immediately) was giving out vaccines for EAR INFECTIONS!!! He was bragging about how great they were and how they hardly have any kids come in w/ ear infections anymore but also added--"But when they do get one now--it lasts longer and can be worse."
Anyway--I did have them break up vaccines and give her only 1-2 at a time. One visit they tried to give her 3 (which was treating 5 things!!). I declined! I'd rather break them up and pay more co-pays!!!
Anyway--I'm not totally against them but I do feel we have over-done it a bit. Thanks for listening and Thank God my daughter is not autistic and is perfectly normal. But those 2 times were 2 of the scariest times in my life.

Okay--sorry for boring anyone and I am done talking about vaccines--I promise!

Thank God about the vaccines. Addison has had 2 moderate reactions to those darned vaccines--one at 4 months (hospitalized for 2 days) and one recently at 18 months! They're over-vaccinated now a days in my opinion. Not a fan of them...........one major reason I'm having no more kids........can't go through them AGAIN. I know reactions are rare--but when it's your kid..............it's not cool.
Off of my soap box now.........

I totally agree with you about them over-vaccinating. Haley always had a little reaction to the ones that they said she should be fine. When they told me she'd get a fever or something, then she was fine with those. I am so glad that we're past that stage of getting shots every 3 or 6 months. She doesn't need any until she's 5 so we're good for at least 3 years.

On another note, I took her to her doctor yesterday since she told me she had a sore throat. I asked about getting vaccines for our trip and was told no, we don't need any shots for anything. So that's what I'm doing. I'm not getting any "just in case".

I just wanted to post that we spent a week in Acapulco back in March of 1996. I would be happy to try and answer any questions people might have. I am not an expert, but have a week's worth of experience there anyway! ;)

While there we did the cliff divers dinner show (La Quebrada from the Club La Perla at the El Mirador Hotel), sunset harbor tour cruise aboard the Bonanza yacht, bull fights at Plaza Caletilla, horsebackriding on the beach, etc. We stayed at the Acapulco Princess and this trip was "BK" (before kids, lol!).

I pulled out my file from the trip and have some maps and brochures I can reference if needed. Hope I can help!

I wanted to let you all know that our pediatrician said that if you are going to be eating anything in Mexico or the Caribbean you should get the Hepatitis A shots. If you aren't going to eat local food then you don't need it. Otherwise she doesn't know of any vacines you need to get. She told me to check with the cruise line though to see what they recommend.
Our family practitioner agrees - Hep A only. If we were doing excursions into any jungles (i.e. to Mayan ruins) he'd recommended Malaria or Yellow Fever.

Since EVERYWHERE we are going is in a "high rate of Hep A" zone (see map http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/hepatitis/a/prevalence.htm ) that is the only one we're getting. DD has already had it so she's covered. DH and I will be getting our vaccinations shortly.
