August 18, 2010...Can't wait for the MAGICal Mediterranean!!!

Hi Everyone

Great to see this thread hotting up! Must feel strange for you originals to have lots more joining in after so long. I can't believe you have still kept the secret Mindy!:confused3

Kate,

My DH now says he might want to do the FE, although I don't know if Im really into it. I have no idea how to make an FE and don't know that I have time to make one. I'll let you know.

No problems, plenty of time yet.

Kate - That is super... price is not too bad in my opinion / no longer offering the free breakfast $110 usd. We would like to see about the bus too! Party of 3 maybe 5 bags - we are trying hard for one each and maybe one extra bag for the trip home..

I am in on the FE too......

No problems, will add you to the bus. I am going to do some looking around this weekend - in between the school Summer Fayre, swimming and tennis lessons!! The last company we used was very professional and efficient, so I am inclined to go with them, it would be around 9 euros each person, I think, but need to confirm it with them. I have put you on the FE list.

Please add us the the FE list

Done!

I am getting so excited guys...I can barely work:rotfl2:I find myself drifting away to the Med somewhere. It's almost a month. I have only been planning this for a few months and I am getting so antsy, Mindy and Lori I can not even imagine how itchy you are lol!

Irene- you have a PM
MacG- No problem!
Amy- you have a PM
K8T-your in too!

Is there an FE going on? If whoever is organizing it wants to send me a list I can add a page to the site so it all stays easily accessible and organized. Just let me know.

Where have you been!!!!:rotfl: Yes I started one a couple of days ago. I fully understand that some of you would rather not have the extra worry and extra weight that goes with FE's, which is fine, it should be a holiday and no pressures! Currently it is located on Page 133, but I will move it forward as we progress. Can you 'lift' the information from the page to add to the website, or would you like me to put it into a document and email it?

Great, added

I am trying to access the excursion possibility that is planned in port. Is it possible to just walk out to taxis and hire one for the day? Has anyone done this? Is it safe? Especially with kids? How cost effective is it compating to hiring a rpivate driver in advance? I am thinking about doing it in all ports if possible.
One of the reasons I want to keep it flexible is because we have the freedom to choose to do what we want when we want. Another: trying to save some money. the cost of 500 for 5 is steep if we do it in several ports.
I really need some guidance.

Thanks, Irene

Irene, you are as safe in Europe as anywhere. We cruise the Med every year and are familiar with all the stops (except Tunis and Malta, although OH has been to Malta as a chld). When the ship docks, the taxis are lined up waiting. They do this nearly every day of the week, for all these stops are used constantantly by cruise lines. Some countries the taxi drivers are a bit of a pain and will follow you along as you walk. But get into conversation, have an idea of what you want to pay and stick to it. If they say no, then walk onto the next one. They are not trying to 'do' you, it is just part of the culture in Europe! All the taxis will be registered with the local authorities and they will all do the same sort of tours - they will know inside out what you want to see. They may speak little English and therefore you might not get a 'guided' tour, but with a good book, or download, you will see what you want to. We always do this in port, or do our own thing by getting the train. If you are unsure, take a notebook and write the key names of places you want and then write down a starting price and work from there! There are other boards (cruise critic), where you can get an idea of price for the standard tour from the ship. We have met some lovely drivers and beat the crowds and stayed as long or little as we wanted to, depending on our interest in where we are.

Okay so this is my first cruise and I am a little confused as to what a FE requires. What do we have to do and all that?

I have been super busy here and have been unable to be on the site for a few weeks so I am just now getting the chance to catch up. I hope I didn’t miss too much.

Hi, I was in the same boat (:rotfl:) as you on our last cruise!, but read some good threads on the main board about FE's, which basically is a pocket organiser, which hangs outside your cabin, on the fish (usually used for notes/mail). It is a sort of secret santa, everyone on the list, brings a small gift/gifts, to put in their Meets FE. I was really worried it would be a lot of hastle and be a nuisance, but actually it was good fun walking around the ship, seeing the different doors and leaving a pressie, our dd is 5 and couldn't wait to get back to the cabin, or get up in the morning to see if anyone had been! I did a couple of drops, one for adults and kids and then one for the kids again (we only had 8 children). FE's varied from homemade, bought, to just a Disney bag hung outside the cabin.

Gifts we had were magnets, pencils, postcards, sweets (relating to the country of the person giving), flags, pirate goodies etc. Nothing too expensive, but some very thoughtful.

Hope this helps.

Kate

P.S. FE HERE!!!! http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1991244&page=133 Post 1991

Great idea about the journals at the Meet and the crayons - why didn't I think of that!?

Well done with the running Lori, I did Week 3 day 2 today, the last run wasn't great, I should be doing my final week 3 on Sunday, but it is a busy day, so not sure can fit it in. Strange thing is, I haven't lost anymore than 2-3lbs (I can vary that from morning to evening!), but physically my body shape has changed very slightly (less on the hips!) and I can bend much more easily. Maybe it is just wishful thinking!!!

Erin, I am going to search for your room number through your posts, but if you don't see it on the FE list, can you let me know it!:surfweb: Found it!!

Off to put DD to bed, maybe back later. I have just seen a chat room, does anyone use it?

I don't know if anyone is interested, but I got a price from a company in Tunisa for a private guide/driver, pick up from the ship, do the main sights and return, they had a good mention on the CC boards:

Inclusions:

-Private Tour as per itinerary.

-Transportation: A private A/C vehicle.

-Visits as per itinerary with private professional English speaking local guide (from the port to the port).

-Entrance fees to the sites visited.

-All Transfers (from the port and back)

Not Included :

-Tips to guide and driver .

-Drinks

Rates: (per person)

-Adult : $149 USD

-Child : $ 70 USD

This tour will give you an opportunity to visit the best sites and will give you the chance to discover the hidden charm of Tunisia.

This tour will be privately organized for you .You can discover on your own rhythm (especially you have a Child with you) the different sites that are included in the tour, you can extend one visit to do more exploring as per your convenience, you’ll have maximum freedom to spend full time for making all visits

At your total disposal for any further information, feel free to contact me.

I don't think we will do it, as I read on the board a taxi was 150 euros for a similar thing, but obviously this will be without a guide.

So while I'm sitting here at work with only 3 people here, I decided to do a tally of the kids ages on our board (I think I got everyone)

Sorry to those that have younger children, I didn't think they would care if they had others to interact with.

Brilliant and interesting. Good to see the wheels of industry and still turning in New Jersey!!!

I've actually gotten a lot of work done today because no one is really here and people stopping in and calling with questions take a lot of time during the day. I just keep my email open and when a Disboard alert comes up I pop on here if I'm interested in chiming in.

DH has decided that he wants to do the FE. He has an idea of what to give that won't take up much suitcase space. We each get one day, correct? I've never done one before.

Just in case you can't find our info

How can we find out if it's safe? Where do I get the range for fares? if it just as easy as coming out and grabbing a cab?

Hi Irene,

Personally - I'm not sure I'd risk it in Tunis. It feels like a very different world and although it was interesting to see I'm not sure I'd have felt comfortable if I hadn't been on a disney trip.

(sorry - we did the same cruise in May - loved it so much we're coming back - everywhere else felt safe)

I thought that may be a good time to present them with the journals? Because I don't know if all of us will be able to print out the mac formats

I'm currenly working on a journal for my daughter. She loves the idea of journaling but lacks the ideas so I thought if I gave her some starters she would enjoy it.

We're doing a journal for all the kids with comments about all the ports etc...a bunch of us took on a port and wrote about it Crzy4dals is putting the whole thing together.

Hi Folks,

Has anyone seen a Navigator for the Mediterranean yet? I have my itinerary almost complete (17 pages!) and I'd like to add in formal night and stuff like that. If you could post one or point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I'm excited about the FE's. I have some pretty good ideas of what I'll be doing!

Thanks!

I'll try to, though I don't want to look showy carrying them around... I might have to have a private showing later....

"THEM" !!?? As in, more than one? That calls for a private showing:lmao:

Have fun shopping!

Ok, I am having a hard time here please guide me to the right sources. I am trying to figure out if I can just "
wing it" at ports. I see most of you seasoned cruisers prefer to book tours in advace. If it because you like to have everything planned out? If taxis are easier and from what I have seem so much are much less expensive, why are more peoplenot opting out of excursions and just doing that?

Kate, can I pm you for more help?

DH and I ended up going today to Rick Steve's travel store!! We got the 2 mini-books for Barcelona and Cinque Terre, as well as the plug adaptor and a money belt. And we also stopped into a camera store and got a spare battery for the DSLR as well as a polarizing and 2 UV lenses! I've also reserved a wide-angle lens for rent to pick up when we get to CA. We didn't start out today intending to get this stuff, but it was on the to-do list, and now it's done!!

I can print them out - I have a nice color laser at work! Mindy - could you send me a copy in pages format so I can make them all the same margins and such..... Then I will put them in a pocket folder...

They are here on the DIS - at http://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-cruise-line/magic-mediterranean.htm

BUT they are missing Villefance and last check --- I was printing those today at work too but only got day 1 done - got too busy with real work.

I think the dreams unlimited website has all the navigators from the first cruise. Formal night is night 2 of the cruise and semi formal night is the last sea day, I believe.

I have saved mine as a pdf...everyone should do that so there is no formatting problems.

To save a s a PDF just take the actions of printing, instead of choosing your printer pick print to PDF. The save screen will pop up. Save it where you want and voila...no formatting problems lol!

However, I do like the idea of presenting them at the meet. So if anyone have formatting issues let's just save all documents as pdf's we can put them on google docs so all can access. If anyone is not familiar with google docs just send me the pdf file and I will upload it to my google docs.

Mine is not yet done( am I the only one outstanding?) That's because DH is doing it and I keep hearing that he's almost finished now for 3 weeks. I'll push him to finish it this weekend.

K8T- nope got it! No I did know there was a FE exchange but I had a brain fart:rotfl: too much going on!

I am adding the page now lol! I would like to join in, but what happens if we change rooms? We may inquire about an upgrade (if any are even left at the port) when do the FE's begin?

PS Mindy- you can buy a FE extender on ebay;) I am debating it. I think they are around $30. Really not too bad if you consider the materials alone may run $20.
