Good Afternoon Everyone.

Jen, I hope Emily is feeling better really soon..........

This afternoon we went to a Thanksgiving Basket Brigade a family in town started making Thanksgiving baskets for families who would not have a dinner. This year we made 340 Thanskgiving dinner baskets. The kids all had such fun. It was such a nice way to spend an afternoon!!

I went to the grocery store this morning. Shopping for turkey day! It would be cheaper to eat out! OMG! I did get all the trimmings. Now what?!? They look great on my kitchen counter!

I'll admit it, I'm a turkey virgin. I've never cooked Thanksgiving dinner.

Couple of questions....

I googled turkey (stop laughing) and the TV Food Network is very helpful! One recipe says you put an apple, onions and celery in the turkey. I don't want to know what used to be in that hole. Do you take the skin off the apple? Slice the onions or shove it in whole? I know you peel them. How about the celery? I know enough to take it out of the Dole bag! But, do you chop it? *** is poultry seasoning for? HELP!!! SOS!!!

Oh, dear God! This is going to be hysterical! What was I thinking?? The lady in the grocery store looked at me sideways when I asked if you defrost a turkey in the bathtub! I've seen that on t.v. it must be true, everything on t.v. is true.

I bought 4 jars of gravy just in case. I hid them from DH. He thinks I can't do this. I will prove that man wrong, or we'll be eating Hungry Man frozen dinners!

I put the apple in the turkey whole, not peeled. You can cut the onion in quarters or in half, or however it fits. I don't use celery, but I'm sure however it fits in there will work. I also cook my turkey upside down because the white meat tends to be a little dry, so that adds moisture to it from all the juices that drip down.
I hope this helps

Candy,

Upside down?!?!?:confused3 OMG, if DH came into the kitchen and saw the Turkey upside down he would head to the nearest McDonalds! :rotfl::rotfl:

Do you have to cook it the entire time upside down? I could see the logic behind it.

Michele

What is the apple for in the turkey? I've never heard of that. We always have T-day at my SIL's house so I never have to cook one! :duck: <---the apple all you turkey cookers are now tossing at me. This year we are leaving for Disney right after dinner so my SIL said I only needed to bring rolls and corn. Yeah I got off easy.

Happy Sunday everyone! I'm going to try and get more active on this thread. I really want to try and get to know all of you before we cruise.

So, as an introduction, I'm Melissa and I'm a 32 year old high school history teacher in Los Angeles. I'm single with no kids (much to my mother's delight ;)), and I'm working on my MA in history. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Melissa

Hi Melissa!! We live in the L.A. area. My daughter is a senior in the Zoo Magnet. Great to see another person from So Cal!! Looking forward to getting to know you!!

I do cook it the whole time upside down. It doesn't come out pretty, but I carve it before I bring it to the table. I found out my sister does the same thing. I learned this when I was working in a food place. My sister used to work in a high end restaurant, and I bet that's where she learned that trick too.

Poor girl, I can't believe she is still that sick! I hope they can give you some good news at urgent care.

Yep, she is still that sick. :confused3 The news we got from urgent care...pneumonia. She is now on antibiotics. We hope that this will help and that she will be getting better soon.

I also cook it upside down the whole time. This year I might try something new. I am thinking I will cook it at 500° for about 30 minutes (just enough to brown the top) and then pull it out and flip it over. I figure it can't hurt and it might make it look a bit better. I think that cooking the bird upside down does make it way juicier.

I'm so glad I'm not responsible for the turkey! I'm allowed to peel the potatoes and that's about it! I'm not exactly God's gift to the culinary arts!

OH gosh I hope she feels better really soon.............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next question... what do you put on your turkey to flavor it?

Butter? Herbs? Salt and Pepper? The evil box of poultry seasoning with no directions on it!!! How rude!

Hey Melissa!

DH and I are both teachers too! DH teaches 5th grade and I teach 4th grade. How do you like working with high school students? It seems a bit scary to me!

Just keep following along with all the posts and join on in...you will really get to know people that way. That is what we did on our last cruise and it was great! We made some fabulous friends and had the best vacation!

I hope so too! I just sent e-mails to all her teachers explaining that she has to miss this whole week of school (good thing it is a short week). I am a bit worried about all the work she will have to make up. I don't want her to get stressed about it all or have a relapse from pushing herself too hard once she gets better. It is so hard to miss 5 days of school when they get this old.

Sounds like my house at Thanksgiving! I do the veggies, hubby does everything else. I'm not big on Turkey, so I am happy he doesn't mind doing it. This year we are doing fried turkey and a fried chicken for me.

The grocery store was crazy this morning, and of course when we got home we realized we forgot some stuff, so back there again tomorrow.

Happy Sunday everyone!

Welcome Melissa!!

For those going to see the Princess and the Frog, my dds can't wait. We are soooo far away from NYC that they will have to wait until after Dec. 11. Have fun with your times in NYC!!!

Jen--I was a little disappointed that they did not have something different this year at Macy's. We always go the afternoon before thanksgiving and there are no crowds--we walk right in and usually walk it a couple of times.

Hope your dd gets better soon.

Does anyone have a fantastic side dish they make for Thanksgiving? I am on the hunt.

Have a great Sunday! Go Vikings!

We were disappointed that Macy's repeated the auditorium exhibit too. I don't buy the fact that it was "back by popular demand"...I think it is due to the economy. We go every year and this year it was kind of a let down to go see the same old thing. We were there at 11:30 today and we walked right in. The crowds were very light and the store was not very busy either. We had lunch at the Oak Grill on the 12th floor and that was really busy though.

I was thinking it was a bit slow because of the Vikings game today.

Hope someone can help you with a fantastic side dish idea! I host Thanksgiving but only serve all the standard side items!

Hello Everyone!!

We are sailing with all of you too come August 2011!!

It's Patty (me)
Diego (DH)
Jaden (DS age 6)
Gabriel (DS age 2).

Can't wait for the cruise and to meet all of you!! :)

I heard this is the cruise to be on. :woohoo: I booked the early bird special. Does anyone know if there is a ship layout somewhere? I have a room number but no clue where it is. I wonder what deck is the best for pushing a stroller in circles.

First - take a deep breath and say - I can do this.!!

I have found that cooking a turkey in a Reynolds Turkey Bag saves the juices, does not burn the turkey and keeps all the stuffing in semi place as I stuff it to the hilt!! I have been cooking thanksgiving dinner for 20 years - boy have I really been married that long - you know I love you honey - (he is a lurker and reads but does not post)

I was just thinking today that we need to find a weekend to do our gingerbread houses too!!

I am going into DD - 10 class room (Jessie) on Wednesday to make houses - should be fun with 120+ 5th graders!!!
