August 16, 2011, Disney Dream - Part 4

Steve shared this with me and thought I'd forward it to anyone interested in what happened to some passengers cruising on Royal Caribbean....

I had read that yesterday, but I'm not sure Disney could have done any different. To me, it was a good advertisement for trip insurance, which I did not buy for our cruise last week. I got extremely lucky, it was probably pretty stupid.

Hi Deborah,

I was on the cruise and wondered about 'the family' that was airlifted. I wasn't on the meet thread, but Lisa Walker directed me to your post. I'm so glad everything worked out, although sad you all didn't get to enjoy the rest of the trip. But the ship will always be there, it's not going any place :) My heart sunk when I heard the announcement over the loudspeakers. I had a brain hemorrhage back in March followed by surgery in May and although I was never airlifted, the memories of rescue rides and ICU all came back to me. Again, I'm so very glad you received good care and you are all safe at home. And I hope you all get back on a ship very soon!

Best - Sue Harris

Wow that would be scary! But I think any cruiseline would have to do the same thing considering the port was closing due to the hurricane, and the worst place for a ship to be is in port. I'm so glad nothing like that had to happen to any of us! Those poor people!

Hi,

I just wanted to say hello. We were the family that were evacuated from the Dream. My DD who is 10 has spina bifida and hydrocephalus (spinal fluid in her brain). She has a shunt (valve) in her brain that drains the fluid. She began to have seizures. She was taken to the medical center where the decision was made to get her and me off the ship (my DH, and 2 other DD stayed on board). We were loaded onto a tug that took us to Freeport Hospital. One of the ship's doctors stayed with me. We were at the hospital for 6 hours before we got airlifted to the hospital in Miami. While there, my DD had x-rays and a CT scan and found out that her shunt had moved and no longer was doing it's job (spinal fluid was collecting in her brain and causing too much pressure). She had to have a tube put into her scalp to remove the built up spinal fluid, and then had a 2 hour surgery the next day to fix the shunt. The scariest thing was when they told me that on a "coma scale" they have of 1-10, my DD was at an 8!

On Sunday, my DH and DDs got off the ship, rented a van and drove from Orlando to Miami to be with us. Thankfully, my DD was well enough that we could drive back to Orlando, where a wonderful man named Patrick (who works for Disney Cruise Line) got us 2 rooms at the Pop Century Hotel for a couple of nights before our flight back to MN. Patrick was wonderful, he called us everyday to check on us, and even stopped by the hotel to say hello, check in, and give each one of the girls a Mickey Mouse. The crew of the Dream was also wonderful, they allowed my husband to use the ship's phone whenever he needed to, to make calls to our insurance company, and to me at the hospital.

We are finally home now. My DD will be seeing her neurosergeon tommarow. She is feeling alot better. She is really bummed we missed out on the cruise (we were only there 2 days), but I told her that she is ALOT more important than a cruise! We told her that we'd save up to plan another trip sometime.

Anyway, I just thought I would post, thankyou so much for the prayers!

Deborah

Thank you so much Deborah for sharing! We were all so concerned! I am so glad she is feeling better! I hope all goes well will the neurosurgeon.

I am so glad things got better with your daughter! Sometimes we go trough moments like this, and we don"t understand why< but rest assure that God does not make mistakes, and He got your DD right on time out of the ship. Hoping that your DD recuperates 100 o/o, soon when you go back in DCL is going to be a time of true celebration! Please let me know of your plans
Blessings

Hi everyone,

just got home laast night. we stayed at AKL Jambo house after the cruise for a few days..

We all loved being on the Dream, what luck we had with the weather and seas! like glass most of the time. the patch seems to have done its job as this is the first cruise I have not felt motion afterwards.

Enjoyed meeting people (we were the red shirt family). and yes, the budget car drop off was a disaster. we also ended up calling a cab and sharing it with another family. Jim and I actually got over to Serenity beach for about an hour the first day and we all rented bikes the second afternoon... fun! we also went to two shows... a first for us!

We ended up buying a DVC when we were at WDW, although now that I heard about the incentives on the ship,. should have done it then! :) We are sorta on hold because we want AuLani and they haven't figured everything out yet...

we did a cruise drop as well... booked for a Christmas cruise in 2012 Mexican Riviera, but will see if we keep it... or not. waiting to see what comes out in 2013 - want to do the Med or the baltics or Australia.

Thanks for all the great FE gifts! it was incredible to get something almost every time we went back to the cabin....hope the gate wasnt a problem fopr anyone.

got home last night about midnight, checked my work email and even though I dont start back to school until Monday,we had an admin meeting this morning at 9.... ahhh.... :) welcome home!

Glad to hear your daughter is ok, we heard the strecther page as well as the announcement about the tugboat (we were just leaving the goldne mickeys at the tiime).

I have a quick question, wondering if any of you know the answer....

We had a bottle of wine plus some mojito and margarita coolers left plus some pop which we just left in our stateroom, do the hosts get to keep it? We weren't sure how that works only that we knew we wouldn't drink it..hope someone else did!

Deborah,

I am so glad to hear that your daughter is doing well. She was in all of our thoughts. We were at guest services one of the times your husband was using the phone and was so happy to hear she was doing better.

Hubby says hi right back. Great meeting you, too.

You too and you're welcome. I felt so bad. As I was walking back up to my seat, I realized I probably should have bought your wife a drink, too, but the show was starting, so I didn't go back. Tell her she has an IOU. ;)

Another passenger told us it was a teenager and her grandparents. Supposedly the girl was having seizures. I'm hoping she's fine by now, but, like you, would like to know for sure.

The second emergency call was for a 92 year old woman who had fallen into such a deep sleep, they couldn't wake her despite shaking and yelling at her. This is from her niece. They watched her overnight & she woke up on her own in the morning.

Were you the family with the matching red shirts?

If anyone went to the comedy show the first night, (the 2nd one after 1st dining), that was my son that got carried up on stage (Ryan). We were able to video it. Fun!

I got on the scale yesterday. It wasn't bad!!:woohoo:

Your son made that show, I was talking about it to all my friends that missed the show. I am glad to hear it was not a plant and he will go far in what ever he chooses to do. What whit and personality at such a young age.

My understanding is that the stateroom host will take/keep what is left behind. We view this as an additional gratuity. :thumbsup2

My stateroom host is going to need a Dentist with the amount of candy we left behind!!!

As far as servers go we had a pretty good group, the head server that we had Fondu was the best head server I've ever had. She was the first one that I've ever not thought "why am I tipping this person?" usually you only see the head servers the first night and then the last when you know they are only comming by so you remember them. Nondu was fantastic, she came by and talked to us every night, remembered our table when we were checking in with out us even telling her the number, ordered up cheese sticks for Jake every night, and when we told her that we like a faster dinner she made sure the team got us in and out of there the rest of the cruise. Our assistant server Chris was fantastic too, he chatted with us nightly, knew our drinks after the first night and made sure we always had a drink. The main server was good, but not as good as we have had in the past, but my husband (who has never sailed Disney) was very impressed with all the servers.

I hope we can keep chatting as well, I would love to go on another cruise with ya'll. I enjoyed meeting everyone that I got to talk to.

We had Nondu too and thought she was fantastic. Like you, it was the first time I didn't question tipping the head server.

How quickly we start to miss our time on the Dream....we can't wait for our next one. In the meantime, I have to start working on the ADRs for our trip to WDW for Christmas. :santa:

Today, I also decided to become an Avon Representative. This is something completely new for me and I am very excited about it! :)

So funny you said that, I became a Thirty one rep before the cruise now I can Disney it up even more and I love all the totes and purses :banana::banana: And may I add, good luck to you

Deborah, I too am glad to hear that your daughter is doing better. It's always nice to hear good outcomes from a bad situation.

We also had Nondu - and I agree, she was great. She got our servers moving a bit after we spoke to her, but she had to step in a couple of times and help them out as well. What table number were you guys at?
