August 16, 2011 – 7 Night Alaska Sailing

My DS (9) is in contact with one other boy on here and would is interested in the Junior Ranger program too. We did it in Yellowstone last Summer and he earned his patch. PM me and I will give you our email address so they can correspond! :surfweb:

I think my DS(9) will be interested in the Junior Ranger program, too!

Mrs. Gumdrop :
Way back when Mellers put together a great packing list for clothing. I don't remember what post # it was, but you might want to do a little search on the thread.

You ladies are amazing!!! :cool1:
I remembered seeing a list, but I've scanned so many different Alaska posts I couldn't remember which one it was in! Definitely will be showing my husband tonight!

On the downside, hubby is dealing with an eye problem that we originally thought was an infection, but its not clearing up. They think he picked it up from work. In the summer, he's the distribution manager for one of the larger blueberry farms in NJ. His office is next to the processing/packing lines & there's always so much stuff in the air, anything could have gotten in his eye. We're keeping our fingers crossed this clears up really soon & he's not still dealing with it on the cruise!

From a Pacific Northwesterner, here is my packing list:

I'm planning to do laundry twice during the cruise

3 pairs fairly decent-looking slacks
3 short-sleeved polo shirts
1 sweater or polar fleece turtleneck
3-in-1 jackets (http://www.landsend.com/pp/SportSqu...=::IVO&CM_MERCH=search-_-3+in+1&origin=search is an example)
warm gloves
1 pair lightweight pajamas
1 pair flannel pajamas
1 swimsuit
4 pairs socks
(I'm wearing black tennis shoes--I can't wear dress shoes for very long)
Dress shoes for formal and semi-formal night
Pantsuit (for me), Dress (for DD), and DH is renting a tux for Formal and Semi-Formal night (sorry, we're going to be outre and wear the same thing both nights)
Nice shoes for formal and semi-formal night

My daughter is also packing exercise clothes

Here's the reasoning:

90 degrees (it does happen in Vancouver sometimes): Short sleeve shirts and slacks, the swimsuit for my water exercises.

50 degrees--I can wear the jacket with the liner zipped out, and the short sleeve shirt with the sweater or turtleneck

20 degrees--I can wear the flannel pajamas under the slacks and turtleneck (a Seattle trick a friend taught me), zip in the liner, wear the 3-in-1 and the gloves and be comfortable.

For babies and young children, you want polar fleece on top with lightweight clothes underneath.

Having been to Alaska a couple times already, I was curious if my packing list would compare to yours. I'm impressed. I normally pack WAY too many clothes and your list is very reasonable.

The only thing I'd add would be a hat separate from the jacket. This is the one thing I missed on my last trip to Alaska. I planned on using the hood on my jacket only. But when we went rafting, we had on a suit provided by the excursion operator. It was tighter around the neck and arms to keep it waterproof. That meant my hood didn't work and I was hatless for the trip down the river. NOT a good idea. That glacier water is COLD.

Ok so after much deliberation over what to gift for the FE's I think I now have a plan(still very much in the planning stage - with only one part actually purchased and in hand:scared1:)

I know - there isn't much time left - this is the first time I have ever participated in an FE and have tried really hard to come up with something that will suit everyone in my group - I hope I have been sucessful!

Anyway I have a few questions about some of the group members that I just need to clarify, I hope you don't mind me asking(or think me rude to ask - I just dont want to make any mistakes)

Ok here goes:

stateroom # 6102 - is it just the two guests? mrs Gumdrop= Lauren and DH= Rich?

Stateroom # 7134 - Kim & Deb(adults) = both female? or is Kim a male - I ask as Kim is used for both genders here in the UK

Stateroom# 7126 - Aby - is this another guest as well as Kim and Chuck?

Thanks if you can help I would really appreciate it.

Oh and before I forget - OUR DOCS ARRIVED TOO:banana::dance3::grouphug:

Hi ElfinJoJo,

Nope, it's just the two of us in the cabin - me and my wonderful DH who puts up with all my obsessive & compulsive talk about this cruise! :lovestruc

I'm sure everyone will love your gifts. To me, it's the thought behind them that matters, and it sounds like you've put a lot of thought and effort into them.

I'm happy to say my FE gifts are done and have been for quite awhile. I just need to put them together into little bags but I think I'll save that for on the ship to save a bit of space. I only did one gift per cabin, but I'm hoping it's something that everyone can enjoy together.

Aby

I just wanted to say thanks again to all who sent prayers and good wishes regarding my grandma ... she passed away peacefully at noon today with family at her side. The last few days have been an emotional rollercoaster, but we know she is in a better place now.

It appears that we will be cruising to Alaska after all - though at the moment it's a bit of a bittersweet realization.

While we will all be glad to see you on the cruise, I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say how sorry I am that you and your family have had to go through this. :grouphug:

You are both correct :)

Thanks! I paid particular attention to that fact because my grandfather was a telegrapher, who, from all accounts, would get particularly grumpy if a movie or television program telegraphed gobbledygook instead of a real telegraph message :)

Mine and my families prayers will be with you. I know these next few days will be hard, but just know people are thinking of you.

Here is the next Disney Nerdism question of the day. Dont forget the first person to get it right gets a special FE gift.

If you have already answered right once please wait a day to give others a chance ;)
