Jeff - great pictures! Glad your trip started out better than last years! The pic of you with your family on the ferry reminds me a little bit of Hawaii - almost looks like it was taken from Maui with the island of Lanai in the background. The water looks fabulous! Love that deep, deep blue color!

Keep 'em coming!!
At this point I think our plan in La Spezia is up for grabs right up until we catch the tender that morning!

We can see how the weather is that day & how comfortable we feel about trying both Pisa & Cinque Terre OR we can see if we feel like being more laid back & take it easy and just go to Cinque Terre. I've read a couple of reports where people have done both in 1 day - but I think most only do a couple of the towns & I'm fine I think with that as long as the 2 towns are Monterosso & Vernazza.
OK, so I saw shiny things yesterday & got ZERO packing done so now today I have to HUSTLE. It was supposed to be a productive day BUT as I was running errands I went thru
Best Buy looking for something and on the way thru the store I stopped to look at the compact cameras.

Big mistake. I think I mentioned I'd bought new 8 GB cards for both my old compact and my DSLR so we'd have plenty of memory - welllll, so when I tried to use the new card in my old compact it wouldn't format. Turns out 5 or 6 years in camera life means that my oldie but goodie won't take more than a 2 GB card.

It's a Canon PowerShot with 6x zoom (not real WIDE tho - but goes from 50 - 210 mm) and it's only 6 megapixels & the ISO only goes to 800. When I BOUGHT IT it had great reviews & had most of the bells & whistles of the day. NOW tho in comparison to the newer models it's larger & slower & clunkier & it runs on AA batteries which are a pain and now ISO's go to 3200.

OY! A new camera was NOT in my budget...but so I played around with a couple of Sony's (I've only ever had Canons) and found that they have this "panoramic" feature which automatically stitches several frames together into wide panned shots. I was like OHHHHHH!!!

Me likey that!!

(I can take a panoramic picture from the Eiffel Tower!) Problem with most of the more affordable models tho is that their zooms don't amount to much. But so I came home & literally spent hours researching & reading reviews to see if there might be a model that I could afford. I don't want to drop $300+ right now but I also don't want to buy something that doesn't do what I want. I would miss the telephoto zoom if I got something that only went to 100 mm. While I love my DSLR, it's big & clunky & there are lots of times I'd just as soon bring a pocket camera (like at the parks). Best Buy has dropped their restocking fee so I might pick one up today - they have the Cybershot DSC-H70 on sale for about $190 this week.

It's almost as big as my Canon but has the panoramic feature & a 10x zoom. The other problem with a new camera is I reallllly don't see the need for 16 megapixels - 10 or 12 would be plenty IMO (since I'm used to only 6 mp) but the one that has the zoom ability I want is 16.1 megapixels.

That means fewer pictures on a card and that they will take up HUGE amounts of space on my hard drive.

I can give my old camera to DS to use. It's still a good camera...I just want a new one?
OK...off to get breakfast then I gotta clean my pond, shower & get moving!
