Attractions going away

I love the GMR and I believe it does need updating, not so much with the movies represented but with the technology. I don't mind Footlight Parade, I object to the stationary chorines with a few bubbles around them. I think the finale from 42nd Street would be a better salute to Busby Berkeley. To me classic horror would be best represented by Boris Karloff or Bela Lugosi or Lon Chaney Jr but of course, Universal has the rights to those depictions. Tarzan is a classic but the Audio Animatronics need to actually DO something. I guess most Disney buffs know the Fantasia scene was originally supposed to depict the Twister from The Wizard of Oz, but the money ran out or it had something to do with the cost, so the cheapie Fantasia clip was substituted. I do think Alien is a modern classic but for goodness sake, fix the Alien which doesn't even come down from the ceiling most of the time. Whenever I'm on the ride I see just the steam effect and hear the screams but the Alien stays up in the roof. And do they even do the bank robbery scene nowadays? I always seem to get the gangster scene with the car that hardly moves anymore. And get rid of the Sorcerer's Hat!

I can confirm that they do in fact still do the bank robbery scene. I saw it on my trip there a couple weeks ago.

We saw it last October. I don't think it's performed alone. Meaning, either both scenes are running or just the gangster.

If the cowboy scene is running and you ask the CM at the end of the line, they will gladly place you in a ride vehicle that stops at that scene.

Yes, you are confused. Or I was less than clear. I am saying that the movie was current when the park opened. Period. It was not a classic. As compared to Casablanca, or Public Enemy, or Singin In the Rain or The Wizard of Oz, the movie was current. I believe that it is the most recently represented movie of all those depicted in action scenes (as opposed to the ending montage.) Had Disney wanted to depict a "classic" space sci-fi movie, it could have used 2001, Star Wars, Bladerunner, and many others. (Incientally, while Alien may have been #12 on Popular Mechanis' List, take a look at what #1 is.)

As for relevant, there is no way to measure or define it. I use as my baseline the number of people in my vehicle at DHS who ask what movie it is they are seeing on the ride, what it was about, and what is going on. I swear that the majority of people on the ride have never seen Alien. But play the opening few bars of "Also sprach Zarathustra" and everyone will instantly know what movie that is from.

Dude no. A ten year old movie is not current. I think it was well on its way to being considered a classic. Bladerunner came out after Alien, how would it be considered more classic and less current and they already have star wars featured in star tours, a bit of overkill to add it to the Great Movie Ride. You could argue 2001 certainly but the other ones, not so much.

Just read this article on Facebook and was actually not surprised at all.

We went to the Studios the first summer they opened and have been back almost every year since. After seeing the Great Movie Ride a few hundred times... it honestly does need some refreshing. I hope they don't close it - but it could use some new movies and some others, like Wizard of Oz, could use improving. I've always thought the Wizard of Oz area looked half done and Tarzan flying by was a cheap gimmick too. With changes in technology the whole ride, even if just updated, could be amazing. But it plays like a 30 year old attraction.

They also need to ditch the phony robbery/hijacking and the tour guide saving the day. It's just overdone.

As for Frozen at EPCOT - I agree that it could simply overwhelm the area there. Better, to me, to build an attraction somewhere else that can handle the crowds better. Though who knows - Disney could get creative with how you queue up for it and not make it an ordeal.

And as much as I love Soarin' now... it seems like a ride that could continually be updated and then have rotating films, i.e. you go back and see the original sometime. I have no idea how hard that could be but it seems like it could like Star Tours and offer a different take now and then. But maybe not.

Malestrom - Okay, Frozen overlay... Okay... DO NOT get rid of it. EPCOT, even though it's my fav park, is attraction/ride lite.

The Waterfall... meh, I don't care either way.

Soarin' - *excited* I WOULD LOVE A NEW MOVIE!!!! I've said for a while that Dis should do a Soarin over the World Showcase type of movie where it shows a scene from each of the pavilions. Just please keep the Horizon orange smell. It reminds me of being a little kid on Horizons. I am totally down with Soarin' over Florida as well.

I really hope they come up with something new (I've heard a rumor an updated Muppet Vision might be coming to Imagination). I do not want HISTA to come back. It's irrelevant now and it terrified me as a child. If I wanted to get sneezed on by a dog I would've stayed home.
