my AP is up for renewal at the end of april. we're going to WDW at the end of march. can i upgrade to a PAP for the remainder of my AP?

I believe you can do this. I almost did the same thing last April (mine expired in early Aug), but decided at the last minute that we wouldn't have time for the waterparks during our trip. -HM

I found this on Wdwig.com's AP FAQ page:

What if I decide I want to change to a PAP after I already used my AP?

You can do this. It will be handled just like any other pass upgrade. WDW will credit you the remaining time on your AP and charge you the difference between that and the PAP price. The PAP will be prorated to expire when your AP would have. If you would rather have a brand new upgrade to expire one year from the upgrade you can do that too but you must specifically ask for it and pay the price difference.

So, it looks like you could upgrade to a PAP, paying the difference in price bewteen what your AP had cost and the cost of a PAP. It also looks like you could ask to have to PAP begin on the day that you upgrade and have it last for one year from that date, but you would have to ask for it and you would have to pay the difference between the pro-rated value of you AP and the cost of a brand new PAP.

I've never tried this myself, but it's a very interesting question. I love to hear from someone who actually did this.
