Attire For Hurricane Ernesto

Here's a style hint from Jim Cantore...King of hurricane coverage at the Weather Channel. He always wears black... it hides sweat, looks good against those white sand beaches :thumbsup2

But seriously, just be careful please.

As Ron White says.. "It's not THAT the wind is blowing... It's WHAT the wind is blowing"

You are going to be driving THROUGH the storm. Not a good thing. You should rethink your driving plans.

Nahhhhhhhhhhh we're doing the same thing. Driving right smack dab through the storm. but, there's no way it can be helped. We've already taken off the vacation time, made all our reservations etc etc etc. it will be fine. We realize we will be driving through some strong rain and winds but have added ample time into our schedule for pulling over if need be. We understand these aren't the best conditions, but we'll be fine. Hopefully by the time we actually get going, this thing will have downgraded significantly due to going over so much land. But, as long as we're aware that our drive will be slow and rainy, we'll be ok.

These storms can spawn tornadoes. It's not just a little wind and rain. Pulling over is not really a great option either. Because Florida is so flat the land interaction does not cause storms to lose much intesity. I know a tropical storm doesn't sound that bad, but it still can be. At the wind speeds projected there can still be things flying through the air, it can push your car around, etc. And to be honest Ernesto is doing some strange things so the track and intensity is still up in the air. Please be careful.

Ah yes, Wilma was a dream afterwards.....it was so comfortable, so so rare after a hurricane. It gets quite warm, especially down here in the Miami/Broward/Palmbeach area.....Orlando, honestly, I'm not quite to sure, but it should be pretty summer like, so I would bring some fall clothes (you know, a light jacket and jeans) but also keep the summer clothes.

Snacks are very important, but remember YOU CAN NOT HAVE LIQUIDS IN YOUR CARRYONS!!

Pack a checked bag full of nonperishable items that don't need to be prepared, cereal bars, crackers, peanut butter, etc. etc. and some water in your checked bag. If anything, the water might be contaminated here. If you have young kids, I would try to bring a flashlight in case there is a brief period of no electricity....if your coming after though, the cheked food might not be so important, but I'd still bring the water, again, in case the water in the area is contaminated.

Other wise, don't be so worried. Disney, by now, should be pros at hurricane prep. with guest and such, just follow anything they say, and it'll all be okay :)

Stay Safe and have fun.

I highly doubt disney will let you do much walking around during the actual storm- while the eye is at or near Orlando...

Typically before a storm- the wind will pick up a while before the weather gets really ugly- then you get lots of rain and wind and it is definitely what blows in the wind that you have to worry about not the wind blowing...

After the storms- in most cases with in a few hours or so of the eye hitting- you start to get really pretty weather- a high generally follows the low pressure system and makes for pretty weather with sunny skies for hurricane clean up- and it can then be very hot- and very humid... Now just to show that all storms don't cooperate like that... when Rita hit Louisiana she hung around 12+ hours with hurricane strength winds and stayed ugly for 24 hours after with tropical system winds and rains- very unusual though

In any matter- I doubt you would need more than some rain gear- and like PP's mentioned some munchies too.

Good luck and have a fun trip- but remember to stay safe- storms are not something to play around with- listen and heed all your warnings and advisories you get

Honestly, driving through a hurricane SUCKS.

There might be a chance of higher flood waters, downed trees and power lines ... plus the galls that are going to be pouring down.

It looks like it's going a little more west at this time, we're thinking it's going to hit our area *Tampa* around Wednesday morning. Right around 8am or so *Right when I'm driving to work!!*

There could be a chance that you could come across a few closed roads .... it's pretty much up in the air.

Good luck and enjoy your trip
Amanda

Wilma went through Orlando area last year on Monday, October 24. We arrived in Orlando, at 8ish Tuesday, October 25 a.m. Weather for the most part was high's in 60's & 70's w/ lows sometimes in 50's. It was great. We wore jackets part of the time & carried them some. We had a blast! Just take a little of everything (long sleeves, shorts, ponchos) & you should be fine. Just watch the weather every a.m. :happytv:

I'm going in a thong and pasties. I might as well if I'm going to get all wet anyway.

But after he finally gets through it will be HOT!!! After a hurricane it is probably the hottest time of the year here in NC.

Kelly

OMG is it ever hot! And not just hot, stiffling miserable hot!

We are leaving the Atlanta area Thursday around 1 pm. We should be either at the end of the worst of the weather here or just passing the middle :rolleyes1 . I hate to drive in rain and especially hate to drive with storms but we feel safe enough. We've weathered many storms and always seem to come out of it without any major problems :teacher: . My DH will be flying from Atl to MCO on Friday around lunchtime- hope there's not any delays for him! We can always stop at a rest stop for a few hours if a hotel isn't available on the way down. popcorn::

It looks now like Ernesto is not going up the middle of the state and not along the east coast. In that case, WDW will shut down until the storm passes. FWIW, the parks were closed 8 hours in advance of Charley.

Orlando weather should begin to deteriorate tonight and be sloppy and windy until mid day Thursday.

Following that, Ernesto will drag hot, dry air up from the south.

If you bring long sleeves, or sweats, plan on turning the AC in your room way way down.

To the two posters who plan to drive through Ernesto:

Please tell me you were joking!

Of course we're going to be careful. I grew up in Florida and lived through many hurricanes. I still think we'll be fine. Thanks for your concern, but we'll be fine.

Good plan daydreamer. You can ever go online and find out where the rest areas are along your trip. but, you can also just pull in at a restaurant and wait as long as you want until you feel comfortable. I've driven out in cat 2 and 3 hurricanes before and have lived to tell the tale. As long as you are aware of your surroundings, alert, and informed of areas for you to get safe if need be, you'll be fine. just take your time, and remember WDW will be there waiting for you no matter how long the drive takes.

I am neither joking nor worried. I am prepared and smart. Trust me, I've been through worse. I grew up in Florida and weathered far worse storms than this. That said, it doesn't mean I'm an idiot. I know when to pull over, I know to take it slow. We'll be fine!!! I'm I'm starting to regret posting in this thread.

If it's "not" going up the middle or "not" along the east coast, then where exactly is it going? :confused3

We were in WDW for our Disneymoon when Tropical Storm Alberto hit and it got pretty chilly! I'd bring some long sleeve shirts and some light jackets...just in case! :) I know I was freezing in my shorts, tank top, and poncho in June!

Cat 2 and 3s. I highly doubt it. Emergency services are not even out in those conditions.

It is not going to cool off here after Ernsesto!!!!! There is not a cold front headed this way!!!

Uhhhhhhhhhhh so now I'm lying???? Yes cat 2 and 3. Why would I make that up? I drove myself to the shelter at Silver Lakes Middle School in Hurricane Andrew and when it hit us it was a category 3 before it turned into a 4. I had no choice, my house wasn't safe. I would be dead if I hadn't driven to the shelter. So I'll thank you not to call me a liar.
