Just wondering! Haylee's first birthday is coming up at the end of September. The stores around here can only get birthday dresses in a 12 months. She is still in 6-9 months and may be for a while. So I resorted to ebay and the internet. I found a great birthday dress on ebay, but not an auction only, the seller will work with you. She will make it smaller and its a white chenille dress with pink marabou around the bottom of the dress. With a birthday cake on the front with 1 candle and Haylee's name on it. The dress is $33.50 plus 5.00 to ship. Too expensive? She also does bibs and a party hat to match, each of those are $13.99 a piece. Opinions? Dress only ,everything or too expensive?

I think it's a pretty reasonable price. Did you see photos? What was the seller's feedback?

Doesn't sound bad at all to me. I remember back when my kids were infants (they are 8 and 11 now) spending up to 60 on holiday and birthday dresses that they only wore a couple times....if that....

I would get the dress only....but not because of the cost for items, but because I would not be interested a bib or party hat. Heck, for the personalization alone, it sounds like a bargain! And you know most people have pix from their first birthday for the rest of their lives.

BTW, Haylee is absolutely darling! Happy early birthday sweetie:)

That is really reasonable! I usually spend 30-50 on dresses from ebay for birthdays and holidays. When you figure you pay about that, if not more, in town and the dresses from some of the ebay stores are so much nicer it is a bargain. As for first birthdays, they only come once and the pics will be worth it!

Thanks LuLu. :) The lady's feedback on ebay is very good. She has something like 1071 with a 99.4% She sells other things also, and the negative feedbacks were well over a year ago and not on her work but on store bought clothes she sold.

I spend around 35-40 brought a big shirt to cover that dress since tradition around here is for kids to have their own small cakes (like those mini type ones in the food stores, sort of like a carvel lil love size) and while you are all eating the nice cake they ge to go to town on their own...handfuls in the hair etc.... I warned the catering place we were having the party at and they lined under her high chair with plastic! I still love that first picture of her godparents taking her hands and shoving them down into the cake..the look on her face was priceless!

I never knew there was such a thing as a 1st birthday dress. I did buy a nice dress and all the accessories at Gymboree for DD's 1st birthday. It cost considerably more than that but then again she did wear it more than once. I wouldn't have batted an eyelash about spending that amount for something I liked even if it would only be worn once.

BTW, as aprilgail2 said either get something to cover the dress or strip her down to a onesie before she gets into the cake. DD had her own little cake as well and when she was done with it DH took her highchair outside to hose it off and I put DD in the tub for a quick bath. She was covered with cake and frosting and if she'd still had her dress on I think it would have been ruined.

I spent less than $20 at TJMaxx and it came with a hat.

I am with CEDmom. My DD is 18 but I never heard of this. She has a summer birthday so just wore a cute outfit, nothing special.

Thanks, Carol, I was begining to think it was just a regional thing, but I think it's my age. We never bought a special outfit for birthdays either, but our kids birthdays flank the July 4th holiday, so we usually had a picnic and picnic attire was appropriate.

BTW, our DD pounded her cake while we were trying to take her picture. Not only did the dress take a hit, but the carpet, the table, and everyone standing around watching too!:teeth:

We never did the bday dresses either....thought I was missing out on something. We always dress them cute, or we did with DS...he is 11 now and cute just doenst go with him anymore.

Ok, I'm nuts! I bought Dierdre's dress and Jordan Marie. It was light pink and made from raw silk with hand made flowers across the waist. It was $100. I bought the bib, Mom (Grandma) bought the "Birthday Princess" crown, and she looked adorable. She only wore the dress for a few hours but it has been dry-cleaned and it's now hanging in her closet in the dress bag it came in waiting for Dierdre's daughter to wear on her first birthday. For an event such as this there is no such thing as ridiculous :teeth: !

We also had printed invitations to her party that started "Oh what joy! Oh what Fun! Princess Dierdre is turning one!".... Maybe I'm not the one to ask about this!!!!!

Erin :D

I never heard of a birthday dress either.
I always had very nice dresses for DD when she was younger and I remember she wore one of those on her 1st b-day but nothing that couldn't be worn over and over again. She's 10 now--I guess times have changed. :)

Well, I'm not a mom, but I have a daughter so... :p

In my opinion, too expensive! Of course, I never heard of a 1st b-day dress either. I just dressed my daughter in something nice and that was that. The pictures will be cute whether the dress costs $40 or $15 ;)

I have never heard of a first birthday dress.

I never heard of it either. DD is 8. She wore flannel overalls and a turtleneck on her first birthday (January baby). Comfy and washable :)

I wouldn't pay too much. I'm not a fancy dress person though. Both my girls First Birthday dresses were under $20, and very casual.
