On the 1/13/07 Magic Western cruise, I noticed that the chandelier in the atrium seemed to have only two or three bulbs in it that were actually lit. Was it my imagination, or are many of the original lights inside no longer working? If that's the case, I wonder if it's because of the difficulty in changing the bulbs as they burn out? Anyone know?

I looked at lenght from the 5th deck at t he chandelier on the wonder and noticed there are very few "bulbs" in it, they weren't self illuminated and so I started to wonder . . . Are they "NOT" bulbs at all but rather small stained plastic bulbs and the whole thing meant to be illuminated EXTERNALLY by flood lights rather than actually shedding light it'self.

Linda, you may be right, but I have never seen any external lights pointed at the chandelier either. Although it is beautiful to look at, it seems odd that I've never seen much light actually coming from it.

The chandelier was made by a famous glass artist named Dale Chihuly. If you google his name and disney--you can see a picture of each chandelier. I believe that the lights are from above or internal and not within the actual glass pieces. Each piece is individually blown and attached by wire. I don't believe any of his sculptures are made as lights. I am a big fan of his work and have seen many specials made about him.

Thanks, Skuba2. I did read a little about Dale Chihuly. Still wondering if anyone knows for sure if the chandelieres were ever lit from inside?

I am also a big fan of Dale's work....recently went to a show of his at the New York Botanical Gardens....just awesome!!!

His work is also featured in the Casino at the Atlantis Resort and at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas....

I had heard....though don't know for sure....that the pieces on both the Magic and Wonder are not glass but plastic due to weight issues....again...not sure this is true or not.

Edited to add that I just found this link which supports what I heard, at least a bit!!!

I have seen the Bellagio one. It is almost too wide and long for me. You can't really see it all from underneath. There is a restaurant in Norwalk CT that also has one. It has one that is the sun over the ocean---it is a seafood restaurant. The Mohegan Sun Casino in CT also has one. It has several broken pieces though because it is actually a "statue" as oppose to a chandelier. Or, a chandelier on the floor. I wonder if acrylics refers to the material or the color? THe Disney ones are some of the more "colorful" pieces I have seen of his. Usually, there is only one or maybe 2 vibrant colors.

MVPhoton, thanks for posting the pictures. They must have been taken when the chandeliers were new, as there is nowhere near as much light on them now as compared to your photos. It looks as if most, if not all, of the actual light in the photos is coming from the spotlights in the ceiling above the actual sculpture. I wish it looked like that now.

Among the 12 cruises on the Magic and 2 on the Wonder ---I can't wait till they DUST them for the 1st time!!--and change the bulbs.
Heck I would be willing to go up and dust the Magic' chandelier on a cruise.
Maybe on the westbound trans-atlantic they will let me.
This is my biggest pet peeve on the ships along with burned out light bulbs in the common areas.

LOL dan and scott. I thought that I was the only one disturbed by the dust. It really bothers me every time I take the elevator and see all the dust on the chandelier. As clean as DCL keeps everything you would think that they would dust them every now and then.:confused3

Here is the official response from DCL Guest Communications:

The chandelier above the Deck 3 atrium onboard the Disney Magic does not have any light bulbs. Instead, small fiber optics are located inside the flower shapes. These fibers are not in all of the flowers and how well you can see the lights depends upon where you're positioned. The fiber optics are lit from a source installed in a remote location above the ceiling. I hope this information proves helpful.

Again, thank you for your e-mail. We look forward to sailing with you again one day soon.

Sincerely,

Joel
