We are taking the 7 night cruise on 11/6 and I have a question regarding the submarine ride. 1 family member has a hard time lifting her legs and climbing. Does anyone know if the submarine is easy to board of if there is climbing involved? Also, I am pregnant and wonder if anyone knows if there are warning signs advising pregnant women not to board due to pressure concerns.::MickeyMo

My question to you is: Where you plan to take the Atlantis Submarine. Some are out of commission because of the hurricanes.

As far as the submarines are concerned, yes, the Atlantis submarines I have ridden and seen require walking backwards down a ladder into the hull. Once you are inside, you walk down a narrow isle and sit on seats facing porthholes. You will experience pressure as the sub dives. I would not recommend it to pregnant women or people with mobility issues.

First, you may will have to travel by boat to the sub launch area. That can be easy enough and then you have to transfer to the sub. Sure footing is a must.

Second, negotiating stairs backwards is difficult for even the most agile person. Those with limited strength will be especially vulnerable.

Third, the pressure from the dive can decrease the availability to expand the lungs, if somewhat minimal. It can also increase anxiety. Under water motion can also enhance motion sickness.

Maybe a better excursion would be a dolphin interaction. It is less strenous and will create a wonderous experience to last a lifetime.

Fair winds and calm seas.

end is correct about the climbing a ladder backwards to get down and then up it to get out. The hole is also just that a hole to go into, if there are any confined space issues this will set it off. If you are going in ST. Thomas, you must take a boat out to Buck Island and "hook up" with the sub and then transfer off. Sure footing as said above is definitely needed. Once inside though the sights are great. You will see plenty of underwater sea life, sharks, barracuda, turtles, fish, etc, and we also saw wreckage from a fishing boat. There were some people who were older in years on our trip, but I didn't notice there ability to transfer or descend into the sub.

I do not recall pregnancy issues. I would check the website or contact directly to determine what is best for you.
