Chud.com (a movie preview and review site) has a new article on Atlantis. Apparently, the reviewer has seen both 'Atlantis' and 'Shrek' and thinks Atlantis is a better movie, from the vantage point that it is a return to good old fashion adventure movies like Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Visit the site for more info. CAVEAT: Chud.com does have humor not appropriate for young ones.

That is the second or third good review/preview I have read in the past week. I am already excited enough to see a 'different' kind of Disney movie -- I love the musicals, but an animated adventure done with Quality and Magic, is something we don't get everyday!

Thanks, airlarry. My mantra for all things new (esp. Disney) is that I'll wait and see how I like it for myself. I'm hoping Atlantis does well, if for no other reason than that the staffing levals at Feature Animation seem to be dependent on it. That's not the only reason, of course, but it worries me.

Let's keep our fingers crossed & hit those theaters on 6/15.

The pre-release reviews are always on the extreme end of opinion – either more favorable or more negative then the general consensus. Especially reviews from Internet sites where relationship between the review and the studios is, shall we say, highly suspect. Remember that the early reviews for ‘Pearl Harbor’ were much more negative than the “mainstream” reviews that followed later.

Since the film opens today in Los Angeles, the LA Times has published its review. It was written by the same person who gave ‘Pearl’ the only unabashedly gushingly positive review from a major media outlet. His review of ‘Atlantis’ is mildly negative; here’s the first paragraph:

“A gift for spectacle and a chunk of computer-generated visuals notwithstanding, "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" plays more like the best Disney animated film of 1981 than 2001. Story line and characterization are decidedly old-fashioned, and a curious decision about production design gives this wide-screen cartoon some of the look and feel of a Saturday morning TV cartoon series.”

The reviews are puzzling. Mr. Showbiz' reviewer, Cody Clark, praised Atlantis. I know, there is a tie-in (or was one) between Mr. Showbiz and Disney, but Mr. Clark has panned some of Disney's animated features before... see this review of Tarzan, for instance: http://mrshowbiz.go.com/movies/reviews/Tarzan_1999/review.html

I am hoping for a big, fun movie, and I think I will get it. When it comes to critics, I always remember one thing pertaining to Disney movies.

Ask 10 critics (heck ask 10 members of the DIS) to rank their favorite Eisner-era Disney movies, and you will get 10 different lists, some praising the same movie that others bomb.

But this Cody Clark guy liked Groove, and so did I. maybe that means something.
