My DFamily (Me, DW, DS12 and DD 6) wants to take a short 4 day trip to the shore next summer, somewhere between south Jersey and Virginia. The kicker is, the DW wants a private cottage (not an apartment or hotel) on the beach, but near a boardwalk or the like. We have no real starting place, just kicking around the idea.

So does anyone out there on the DIS have any tips for a vaca like we're looking for?

Hope so.

Thanks in advance.

Ocean City NJ is good for families and has lots of rentals.

try vrbo.com and check out different NJ shore towns. I thik you can google what towns have a boardwalk (with amusements) in NJ, Ocean City, Pt Pleasant, Seaside and Wildwood immediately come to mind...

Long Beach Island (there are lots of towns on LBI) is great, but there is no boarwalk.

Cape May, no question. She will be weak in the knees with love for it. Chick paradise, truly. It has a little boardwalk with one arcade, a little movie theater with a few screens, a couple of michelin-starred restaurants, and perfect deep southern-facing beaches where the sun rises to the left and sets to the right ... it's total serenity with amazing food.
Go to www.capemaytimes.com and search. Many of the B&Bs have cottages in the back, walking distance to the boardwalk, beach and here.

Just warning you that most cottage rental is required weekly in the summer. They don't HAVE to rent for less time to fill the space,so they don't. I agree that Cape May is lovely. I worked in Wildwood(just a bit north) for a summer while in college and Cape May was a wonderful spot!

I am partial to Ocean City, NJ. I live here and love it. The boardwalk is great and very family oriented with 2 small amusement parks and a small water park, tons of mini golf. The beaches are clean.

I would agree with Ocean City, NJ for the 4 days.
I love Long Beach Island (NJ), but like others said, it might be hard to find than less than a week's rental and it's a little more effort getting out there for 4 days, but beautiful, quiet and peaceful!
Being from NJ, we are definately partial to the NJ beaches vs. Maryland or VA.

We always go to Avalon but you probably can't find a rental for only 4 days. It has a perfect family environment with short drives to Ocean City or Wildwood for boardwalk entertainment. With young children, I would definitely pick the Ocean City boardwalk.

Atlantic City
Seaside Heights
Long Beach Island

I'd say get to LBI, but no to Sleaside and SC. I like Wildwood Crest, and Cape May. I think the further south you go will get you more house for less money - beach homes cost thousands to rent in NJ, and you don't get much.

Edited to add Ocean City, NJ - very family friendly, nice boardwalk.

Try the Delaware shore; Rehoboth, Bethany, Dewey, Fenwick Isle. All very nice.

Like someone else said, it is unlikely that you'll find a cottage to rent for less than a week in the summer.
