We are thinking of flying into Atlanta then driving over to HHI. DH doesn't like the small planes that fly into Savannah, and it's too expensive to fly into Jacksonville or Charleston. We are suppose to leave in 2 1/2 weeks. We can get a flight into Atlanta for $245 vs $345 at JAX. We'd get in a on Saturday night then drive to HHI. Anyone do this? This is all so unexpected as my DH has back surgery last week and we were suppose to drive. This is are only alternative unless we cancel. I already tried to reschedule but since it is summer, of course they are all booked. Then I'm not sure when we would use our points. Any thoughts? Thanks!

It will be about a 5 hour drive (I am fairly sure) out of Atlanta to Hilton Head. Not sure of your time of arrival, but you might arrive very late at Hilton Head. Are you booked at the resort for Saturday night? If not, you might drive a little while south of Atlanta, spend the night and then drive in on Sunday a.m. When I drive it from Arkansas, I like to get past Atlanta, spend the night in Dublin, which has a good choice of chain hotels near the interstate, then have a fairly short drive to HHI.

I think it took me 7 hours to drive from b'ham - once you are on 16 it is a very pleasant drive. It takes about 2 hours to get to Atlanta.

We just flew to Savannah on Delta, and we connected through Atlanta. The aircraft used from Savannah to Atlanta was an MD-88 (I think). Anyway, certainly not a small regional airliner.

Have fun! :drinking:

The flights directly into HH are the small little planes. However, the airport n Sav. is big and handles the big planes, no problem. It might sound confusing because Savannah is now calling itself the Savannah/Hilton Head Airport. Does AirTrans fly from MI? They have good rates. Also, try a website called sidestep.com---it lists the best prices for ALL the airlines that fly into any airport. Remember, Charleston is also an option, only a 2 hour drive from HH.

Good luck!

One thing that will work toward your advantage is that Atlanta airport is on the southside of Atlanta. You will not have to fight as much traffic. This will probably shave a little time off your drive. It takes us about 4 hours to get to Atlanta Airport and 8 to 8 1/2 hours to get to Hilton Head. So 4 to 4 1/2 hours would be my guess. (As long as you do not hit rush hour traffic in Atlanta.)

Did you look into Savannah?? We fly into there and always have a jet....It is not huge, probably 75-100 seats.

We did RT from Philadelphia on US Air...$225 PP. Direct flight down, 1 hours Atlanta layover on the way home.

It is about 35 minutes from the airport to the resort.

We have been to HHI twice. First time flew into ATL and our drive was 6 hours because of road construction. The second time we flew into RDU and the drive was about the same. We were trying to save money on plane tickets. The drive was okay because we we live on the West Coast and it is a long travel day anyway.

We used FF miles for Spring Break of 2006 and are flying First Class into Savannah. We are excited to fly SAV and try first class. I think we will get a hotel in Savannah and explore the city before driving to HHI the next day.

The planes we will be on do not look small. Double check what size plane you might be on. If the price isn't much different fly into Savannah. The drive is not what it's cracked up to be.

Any good hotels near the Savannah airport?

Thank yor for all of your replies. I ended up booking a Delta flight into Savannah, it was only $90 more per person, instead of flying into Atlanta. So our total flight was $377. We do have a lay over in Atlanta. We thought it might be better on DH's back.

Any good hotels near the Savannah airport?
I don't know of any hotels, but there are several very nice bed and breakfasts right in downtown Savannah. We stayed in one about 10 years ago. Most of them are historical homes.

Leaving in 13 days!! :cheer2: :cheer2:
