Hi, Have just found a good priced flight from Atlanta to Hilton Head Island. How long does it take to drive there please (as many of u know - am not from the States, so i don't have a clue). Also, where will I pass through on the way, if we want to stay over anywhere and where would be the nicest. Would we pass through Charleston (could use some concierge points there!). Thanks.

It is probably about a 5 hour drive from the Atlanta Airport to HHI. You probably wouldn't go through Charleston on the most direct route. You would likely go through or near Savannah, but that's right next to HHI so you probably wouldn't decide to spend a night there.

The Atlanta airport is south of Atllanta. You would leave the airport, get on I-285, exit to 1-75 and go south about 90 miles to Macon, Ga. At Macon you will get on another Interstate(can't think of the #) and go East about 200 miles. Should take 4 1/2 hours to HH. Depending on when you arrive in Atlanta would depend on where you spend the night. Macon or Savannah, Ga. would be fine. Savannah is very historic. You will actually bypass Savannah on the way to HH. But it would be a nice stop. Also there are zillions of places to stay on HH if you arrive before your ressie at DVCHH.
Enjoy.

We flew into Atlanta last summer and drove down to HH. It took us about 4 1/2 hrs. It seems that the speed limit was at least 70 most of the way. If you like to speed, just watch out for the GA troopers hiding amongst the pine trees!

Cinderella,
Did you try to obtain a flight into Savannah, GA? It may be worth your while to do so. Atlanta & its' airport are very busy, while Savannah is much smaller and is about 45 min from HH. We flew into Savannah a couple of years ago and received reasonable rates on rental cars.

There's nothing special on the drive from Atlanta to HH. You might want to stop at a restaurant at any of the interchanges, but there's really no points of interest on the way.

Are you also considereing just catching the shuttle flight from Atlanta direct to Hilton Head Island? I don't know what it might cost, but if you did get a good price, it would save you the hassle of the Atlanta airport, and the drive. Then just rent your car at Hilton Head. The HH airport is very small and convenient.

Don't even consider taking a shuttle flight from Atlanta to Savannah as that wouldn's save you much as you'd still have an hour's drive from there to get to HH.

Charleston would be quite a bit out of your way but if you have a place to stay for maybe a day or two, it's a very nice city with lots of history. So if you do decide to drive, it might be worth it to you to add a few extra hours extra driving to stop at Charleston, either going on the way to HH or when returning to Atlanta.

We're just back from HH. The DVC staff there has been making some program changes that they'll be putting into effect soon. The weather was great.

Have a great trip.

Delta and Air Tran both have regular shuttles from Atlanta to Savannah; after arriving it is a pleasant 40 minute drive to the island (remember to use the right side of the road:D ). Van/bus shuttles are also available from the SAV airport (but we've never used them).

There are no flights from Atlanta to the HHI airport, the HHI airport is primarily served via United out of Charleston, and the fares are very expensive.

Another caution: Avoid driving to the island during morning rush hour (especially in the summer!); there is only one road onto the island and others have rumored that one to two hour delays are not uncommon:eek: .
Have a great trip!
