Atkins and nitrates

could someone please help me. The book says you can have bacon and all beef hot dogs, yet every package I look at says it contains sodiun nitrite which the book says stay away from. Could anyone please clarify. This is day number 5 for me and I would kill for a wine gum or something. LOL

Atkins says to avoid nitrites not beacuse it interferes with weight loss, but because nitrites are a known carcinogen. I still eat them occasionally anyway, and I haven't had any problems... I don't think I'm hurting myself too bad Your mileage may vary, however.

Health food stores carry nitrate free hot dogs. Never tried them though, so I can't tell you how they taste.

I've tried the nitrate free bacon and it was very good. Haven't found any nitrate free hot dogs yet, though.

Have tried both not nitrate bacon & hot dogs (bought from our local Whole Foods Grocery). Excellent - in some ways better than the original - they also have less preservatives.
