We are travelling from australia in 4 weeks from today. Booked to fly to Hawaii then ATA airlines HNL to LAX. I woke up to an email ATA is bankrupt we have lost our flights and money for family 6( heads thumps)

I'm so sorry that has happened to your family. I just heard the news about ATA going bankrupt at this mornings news. Is there any way to recoup your $$ tickets?

That's awful!!! OMGosh. You can't get any of your airfare back? Can you try through your credit card company? I bet they can help.

What a horrible thing to happen! At least hopefully you have time to make other arrangements.

Yes, try your credit card company. Over here in Hawaii we've also suffered the loss of Aloha Airlines this week. They have advised that people dispute the charges on their credit cards. If it's already been billed and paid for, though, you probably can't dispute, but many credit cards have traveler's insurance and you can make a claim that way. Hawaiian Airlines has been helpful with the stranded Aloha passengers by offering them stand-by status on their flights. Since your trip is a month away, that offer may not be available. Last resort is filing a claim with the bankruptcy court.

Hope things end up working out for you!

Oh my goodness.

Since it's from Hawaii, was your flight connected with Southwest's deal with ATA? If so, have you seen this page on SW's site?

Since your travel is 4 weeks away, don't call them until the 7th, but if your ATA flight was connected with SW, the following will be good to know:

Southwest immediately implemented a plan to take care of all Customers who purchased a ticket on Southwest and are scheduled to travel on ATA service by rebooking them on a new itinerary closest to their previous travel plans, or offering a full refund for any unused portion of a ticket. Reaccommodation decisions are based on the best scenario in each Customer situation and contact will be made in the order of the Customer's scheduled travel date.

Also,
Southwest reservations agents are in the process of contacting Southwest Customers who have booked future ATA service with travel dates from today to the end of ATA's prior schedule of Aug. 22, 2008.

For your sake I do hope your ATA flight was "through" Southwest.

I am so sorry this happened to you. I hope something works out and that you can still take your trip. Good luck!:wizard:

i am SO SORRY!!! but things could have been worse. Cause i heard this one story on the news, where this one lady had a flight on Aloha. Then they went bankrupt, then they rebooked her on ATA. Then they went bankrupt. So be thankful that you still have time to work things out before your trip. I hope things work out for you!

Did you pay with a credit card? I know NAB, ANZ and the Commonwealth both have a section in their credit card agreements that you can dispute the charge as "goods or services not provided as agreed."

Did you purchase travel insurance? Or does the credit card you paid with (assuming you paid with a credit card), have trip cancellation and interruption coverage on it? You might be covered under supplier/carrier default, or some wording to that effect, it'll be in the small print.

I hope this can be worked out for you :grouphug:

I think its just terrible that companies can do this, its just so wrong! I am so sorry!

i feel just awful, phoned credit card company they are lodging a dispute could take weeks though, then have booked more flights with alaska airlines at the extra cost of $2700.00 aud, i would feel much better if i knew credit card would refund all the $2000.00 but it is just wait and see. My poor kids have been collecting cans for cash for about 18 months now, saving birthday money ect. The four of them offer to give me what they have to help:headache: :headache: :headache:

Awww thats so sweet they want to help you! I'm sure your credit card company will be able to help you somehow! Don't worry about it right now go to DL and have a fun time! Then worry about it when you get home!

Delta, SouthWest, etc are all providing pretty cheap airfare if you got the extra cash. i know Delta and US airways will give you a ticket for $100 each way(which is still a lot). :\

The ATA Website http://www.ata.com/ says to contact your credit card provider. Alternativley, contact your trip insurance provider. Some, not all, of the Australian ones have an alternate transport or carrier go bankrupt or similar provisions.

After completed this, try Expedia.com.au for quick comparrisons between carriers. You can still book directly with the carrier, but Expedia will show most airlines together at the same time.

The same thing happened to us on Christmas day. The airline we were due to fly to LAX with for our Disneyland trip went bankrupt so we were $3000 out of pocket! I phoned our credit card company (we needed to speak to the dispute department). We faxed our flight confirmation details to them, they sent us a form and we got our money back witin about 3 weeks. It was quite an easy process.
I hope you are able to book new flights.

I am so sorry
I am in Indianapolis (ATAs headquarters) we don't have flights out of here anymore but, it was BIG BIG news here with all the workers and everything.
I feel really bad for everyone but, especially anyone who had flights yesterday. Can you imagine going to the airport and they are just gone?!
On the news they said to go through your CC company so I think that should work out for you.
GL!

From ATA

ATA AIRLINES DISCONTINUES ALL OPERATIONS
After filing for Chapter 11 on April 2, 2008 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Indianapolis, IN, ATA Airlines has discontinued all operations and cancelled all current and future flights. Following the loss of a key contract for our military charter business, it became impossible for ATA to continue operations. Unfortunately, we were not in a position to provide our customers or others with advance notice.

We apologize for the disruption caused by the sudden shutdown of ATA and regret the impact on passengers, employees, suppliers, and other parties. ATA customers should seek alternative arrangements for current and future travel. A list of other airlines serving ATA’s destinations is available here.

ATA customers who purchased tickets using a credit card should contact their credit card company or travel agency directly for information about how to obtain a refund for unused tickets.

ATA currently is unable to provide refunds to customers who purchased tickets directly from ATA with cash or a check. These customers may be able to obtain a full or partial refund for their unused tickets by submitting a claim in ATA’s Chapter 11 proceedings. Information about submitting a claim will be available at the following website: http://www.bmcgroup.com/ataairlines.

Customers who purchased tickets from Southwest Airlines for flights operated by ATA under the codeshare agreement should contact Southwest Airlines directly at (800) 308-5037. Southwest has implemented a plan to take care of all customers who purchased a ticket on Southwest and are scheduled to travel on ATA service by rebooking them on a new itinerary, or offering a full refund for any unused portion of a ticket. I hope you can get some resolution through southwest as mentioned by a few others.I feel for you it is such a bummer.Don't give up.Try the suggestions you hear here i.e credit card company etc.....Good Luck

You may want to go ahead, and get another flight. They may ask you to file a claim with their bankrptcy court and in that case will take a good while. Also the closer your trip the more disney charges to cancel.
