At what age did you get your Drivers license?

I took driver's Ed when I was 16. My parents had a car (used) picked out to buy me. I HATED driving. We lived where there was a good public transit system. So, I asked my parents to please keep buying me bus passes instead of buying/insuring a car.:thumbsup2 My college town did not have much for public transit and I wanted to take Horseback riding for a PE credit sophomore year and could not get to the stables without a car. DH (he was my boyfriend then) taught me to drive the summer between freshman and sophomore years--I was 19. He taught me on his truck and let me take it to lessons from the dorms that fall/winter. True love at its finest:love:

I was either 21 or 22. I was in the Army in Germany and a Sergeant told me to move a truck from one location to another. I asked him "How?". He said to just drive it like a car. I told him I had never been behind the wheel of a car or truck in my life. So I learned to drive in Germany in an Army 2.5 Ton truck with a five speed transmission.
Great story:rotfl:

DH got his on his 16th birthday.

I tried and failed. It took me until my 3rd try to get my license. I could not wait to get it.

My dd got hers on her 16th b-day as well.

I got my permit when I was 16, got my license at around 19, I think. The only reason I got my license? My mom really wanted me to have it, I didn't see the point in having it because I was taking trains everywhere anyway. Well, my mother one day tells me I need to get my license because one day, I may be married and have children, and my husband may become abusive and I'll need to take the kids in the middle of the night and run away from him. And what am I going to do if I can't drive? Wait for a bus with a crazy husband on the loose in the middle of the night?

I thought my mom was so nuts, I took the road test. Not like my mom should be talking anyway, she didn't get her license until she was 28 and 8 months pregnant with me. It was her 3rd time taking the test, and she thinks the instructor passed her because he was worried she might pop at any second.

16. I drove on a lot of back roads with my mom even before I was supposed to ;)

DH taught me to drive a stick shift after we started dating.

I was 16. On my 16th birthday I got my permit. 6 months later I got my license (per state law.) No messing around for me!

I got my permit at 15 and my license at 16. My dad taught me how to drive.

I failed my first attempt but got it 2 weeks later when I was 16.

The reason I failed was during the road test, the tester asked me to make a left turn using a hand signal (do they even teach those any more?) Well, I knew what it was from the written test but had never actually made a turn that way before. So, there I was, very nervously approaching the intersection, trying to wind down the window (no power windows) while driving and keeping the car under control that I didn't even see the stop sign!

We got back to the DMV and he told me he couldn't pass me since I had committed a moving violation. Of course, I started crying, mainly because I knew my older brother would tease me forever. I did succeed 2 weeks later.

I was 17. The class at our high school had a waiting list...so i had to wait! lol.
And I didn't drive out of town till I was 18. I'm really paranoid about driving and freeways scare the crap out of me!

In the UK you cant have a license until you reach 17. First you get a Provisional from 17+ where you have to drive with license holders and P plates on your car, then you apply for your test and if you pass can drive on your town.

I got my Provisional on my 17th birthday, took my test 4 days later and passed :thumbsup2

long time ago now though!

I got mine when I was 16 after having gotten a learner's permit at 15½. I also took Driver's Ed in school.

16 1/2. I don't know who was happier: myself or mom who declared that she is done being my chauffer. :lmao:

On the other hand, there is DH who still doesn't have his license... :rolleyes1

Got my permit the day I finished drivers ed (earliest I could get it) and took my drivers test the day I turned 16.

I couldn't wait. In fact I turned 16 about a week into the school year and I convienced my mom to let me drive to school with her in the passengers seat and then she met me at shcool at 2:20 so I could drive home. LOL I think she was just as happy for me to have my license, although she wanted me to wait to drive myself to school alone for a while. I drove the next morning and backed into a pole at the gas station:rotfl: I didn't tell her until I was in my thirties.

Legal age in NJ is 17 so I got my license a few days after my 17th birthday.

I grew up in Indiana and got mine the first day I was eligible by Indiana's rather odd law at the time: 16 years, 1 month, 1 day old.

Wow that's interesting, does DH not want to drive? I do know a couple of older ladies that never got their drivers license.

I got my permit at 16. I had to wait a little longer because there was a wait list at school for the behind-the-wheel class. I got my license at 16 1/2, but I didn't have a car to drive until I bought one over a year later.
