I am a long time AT&T customer and had the iPhone from the beginning. I have unlimited data grandfathered in from the beginning. I am hearing that if I upgrade from my 4s I will lose this. Any idea if this true?

Verizon is the same way. They have figured out they can make more money on data than calls and texts.

It is true. I think the only way around it is to pay full price for the phone - no upgrade discount. This was the case in November; don't know if that's still in effect.

Hmm, this must be something new because when DH and I upgraded to our 4s we were told we would still be able to have our plan.

What a rip off if you do...Geez. Always get their money dont they. :headache:

I have upgraded my iPhone sets several times with a discount and kept my unlimited data plan. You just can't make changes to the terms of the plan and keep unlimited data. They always offer something to get you to change but I turn them down.

We have 5 phones on our plan and were grandfathered in also. We have done many upgrades on our phones and still have the plan.

I have unlimited data with AT&T and I upgraded to a 4s last year.

Nope, I just upgraded from the 4 to the 5 on AT&T and kept my unlimited data plan. It is grandfathered.

I did the upgrade at Best Buy, and I asked the salesman about the unlimited plan before he started processing the upgrade. I don't know if there's anything special they have to do in the processing to transfer the unlimited plan, but be sure to mention it up front.

We upgraded from four to five and kept the unlimited.

Though we are seriously thinking of giving it up. We both use our phones a lot, always looking stuff up, checking email - and the most data we've just in a month was just over one gig.

We could get a 5 gig a month limited plan with all the other features we have for $10 less. We also could tether our phone using it a wi-fi hot spot for our tablets and laptops. We currently are paying $50 a month for a portable wifi device from a different phone company. That is for 5 gig a month but again we have never used even a gig.

So we could save $10 on our iphone plan plus give up the $50 month wifi device and still be able to do everything. The only reason we haven't is we still have a few months left on the wifi device contract. Once that's done we're going limited.

Feb 20th I upgraded my 4 to just the 4s and I am still grandfathered in the unlimited plan.

Upgraded my hubby's 3 to a 4S over Christmas and he kept his unlimited data plan.

I upgraded to the iPhone 5 last October and kept my unlimited data plan. I haven't heard that AT&T was changing that.

I even went from a regular data plan to the iPhone data plan, and they kept it grandfathered. I lost my unlimited prior to the iphone, but I pay $25 for 2gigs a month. My bf has a new line and has 3gigs for $30 a month, all on the same contract. Neither one of us has come close to going over. He's on a galaxy sIII.

I've heard Sprint and Verizon socking customers for upgrading their phone and charging new fees, but never from AT&T.

There is a trick to those grandfathered unlimited plans. The phone companies "throttle down" your data speed once you exceed a certain data use point each month. So while it is unlimited, it won't be anywhere near 4g once you pass that point.

I upgraded just this past weekend from a 3GS to a 5. Unlimited data is still in effect. You're grandfathered, and you're safe! :thumbsup2

No, this is untrue - you can be grandfathered in and keep the "unlimited".

But you will be throttled at 5 gig anyway with "unlimited". So it is never truely unlimited.

We switched over and put our 3 iphones on a 10 gig datashare because it was comparable to my previous unlimited plan price point wise. That allowed me to add my daughter. That includes unlimited calls and texts.

It was a much better deal and we only use about 3 gig of data max between the three of us. One of those users is a tween. I feel that we are pretty heavy iPhone users - I also use my iphone 5 as a hotspot. IF you are worried you will go over - enable the wifi so that it will pick up wifi first.

I've upgraded from a 3, to a 3G, to a 4, to a 5, and have not lost my unlimited data.

In fact I'm on my original family plan from 2003.

I use massive amounts of data when running or traveling. I've had some throttling issues but nothing too horrible.
