We have been at WDW since Christmas Eve and been having an absolute blast! I thought i would share some of my observations and experiences from this, the busiest week of the year at WDW....so here goes:

SSR: The resort is beautiful! The Carriage House and Artist Palette area are all decked out in Christmas decorations - not as impressive as, say, Wilderness Lodge, but perfectly suited to the setting here. At check-in on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day they had a very nice cast member in appropriate Saratoga Springs dress handing out sugar cookies and lemonade - a nice touch! I had requested Grandstand and were assigned there! Fantastic room location. Quick walk to both the GS bus stop and the AP and the Springs bus stop. We are in a studio lock-off and the room is immaculate (or was until our teenagers "unpacked." :goodvibes As we have experienced in all of out previous SSR trips, the resort has such a laid-back, relaxing feel. We have not seen or heard any neighbors at all, and despite full parking lots the resort does not feel at all busy.

The weather: It has been COLD. Not NH cold like we are used to (it was 1 above at home the other day), but certainly cold for FL. It has been in the 30's in the evening and overnight for three nights now. It is supposed to gradually warm up tomorrow and be seasonal (70 or so with lows in the 50's) by the end of the week. We had seen the forecast in advance of our trip, thank goodness, and brought all of the coats, hats and gloves necessary to still enjoy our trip. During the day it has been very nice and sunny, just chilly. So far we had one evening of showers, but nothing like the downpours of summer.

The crowds: We zig when others zag. Now that our kids are older (15 and 18) we avoid early mornings completely and concentrate on the parks in the evening and at night. Works well, and has really worked well this trip. DS and I were at MK on Christmas night until 1am and walked on to every single ride (other than Space Mtn. which still had a bit of a wait). The whole family did evening EMH at MK on Sunday until 3am, and, probably thanks in part to the cold, we literally had the park to ourselves. We rode Space Mtn. several times - once when we did not stop until we got to the empty rocket just waiting for us! Very cool! Twice we had our own rocket for just our family!! We even walked right on to Peter Pan...that is almost unheard of, and we had a private Pirate's boat as well!

Yesterday, however, we had reservations at Tony's for a 2:00 lunch (more on the food in a bit) and we discovered all of the people! MK was busy! Buzz was a 60 minute wait, Space Mtn. 90, and there was a line for the Peoplemover that reached over to the Buzz line. I have been in the park when it felt more crowded (NYE a couple of years ago), but it was a shock after having all of Main St. to ourselves late Sunday night. Even with the crowds, however, we enjoyed a great view of the Holiday Parade, a spin around the Carousel of Progress, and the Peoplemover before heading back to SSR for a relaxing evening at the resort.

Today we spent some mid-day time exploring some resorts (Poly and GF) and made our way to DTD for some shopping. One way to avoid the crowds in the daytime, for sure, is to visit the resorts. There were people, but nothing too unusual. The gingerbread house at the GF was beautiful! We even got to see a bride and groom taken to the wedding pavillion in Cinderella's Coach...wonder how much that cost them?! DTD was busy, but not wall-to-wall.

Tonight we are going to DHS to take in the Osborne lights and the 3rd showing of Fantasmic. Hoping for one more night of people avoiding the cold....We'll see how the crowds are... We haven't seen Fantasmic in a few years - hate the wait and the fact that it is only a few nights a week now, but DS loves the show and really wanted to take the time to see it, so why not?:)

In fact, time to head out....I'll add more about the food (mostly excellent) and the busses (amazingly excellent) later on....

Any questions I can answer, please let me know!

How refreshing to hear a positive post about the (typically) busiest week of the year! So much depends on making plans that work for your family and keeping a positive outlook!

I hope you continue to have a wonderful time and enjoy spending time together! Hope Fantasmic worked out for you!!

Quick update before bed....the crowds were very manageable at DHS tonight. Not crowded at all at Osborne Lights. And they were spectacular! The kids got handed a pair of ToT Fastpasses by a friendly passerby leaving the park, so they got to ride that (40 min. Standby at the time...around 9:30pm) while DW and I stayed warm in the giftshop. We arrived at Fantasmic about 20 minutes to showtime and walked right in. The place was maybe half full at best! Happy to report that Mickey beat those forces of evil yet again!:goodvibes

More thoughts tomorrow, but so far a spectacular trip!

One parting note....average bus wait....4 minutes!!!!! (we have kept track):cool1:

:santa: :thumbsup2 Wow! Now that's what I call a great trip! We love the SSR, it's our home resort and we enjoy staying there, it' our home away from home! We have stayed at other resorts onsite and offsite, but always go back to SSR. We also enjoy all the extended magic hours wether early or late great benefit for staying at an onsite resort! Hope you enjoy the rest of your trip! :dance3:

Thank you for sharing. Enjoy the rest of your trip and I hope it does warm up a bit for everyone.

Can't wait to hear how the rest of your week goes. Glad you're having a good time. Where do you plan on hanging out for NYE?

Well, just saw an update from touringplans about crowd levels yesterday and we must be doing something right because they report that WDW saw the highest crowd levels of 2010 yesterday! I must say, though, that we are so fortunate to be able to be members of DVC. We visit WDW, on average, 2 or 3 times a year, so we never feel like we have to cram everything into one visit - we know we will be coming back for years! Those that have their one trip to WDW do not have that luxury (and it really is a luxury).

Some more thoughts:

nolanboys - Not sure yet where we will be NYE. MK will likely close to capacity early in the day, but will probably open up again by late evening (that happened for us a couple of years ago). That is our last night here, and we like to end with time at MK so that will probably be our 1st choice. Epcot is our 2nd. During the day we will be sleeping in, packing:headache: and might take a trip to play mini-golf or maybe pop into AK (probably the least crowded park that day) - we will be avoiding the other parks during the day for sure.

Busses: Like I noted before, the average wait we have had for a bus, any bus, has been around 4 minutes. Several times we have waited less than a minute or just walked on. The longest wait - 9 minutes. We have noticed people using SSR busses to get to DTD. They seem to get off a the Grandstand stop and wait for a DTD bus there. That would tell me that people are not really using DTD parking to get to the parks. The DTD parking lot has been mostly full anyway - lots of shoppers.

Harry Potter: We have been wondering if Harry Potter at Universal has changed guest habits...hard to say...but what we have noticed is lots and lots of Griffindor (sp?) and other HP scarfs (like the kids wear in the movie)..so people are certainly visiting both Universal and WDW.

Food: We decided not to go with a dining plan this trip and use TIW. We have eaten at Turf Club, Coral Reef, Tony's, and Kona Cafe (for breakfast). We have mostly loved our food at each restaurant but the fav's for the family have been Coral Reef and Kona (Tonga, Tonga, Tonga!). Our meal choices have been mostly hits, with some misses - I had to send my ziti back at Tony's - just mush! The manager was fantastic and replaced my meal with a much better turkey/bacon pannini. We will be eating at Via Napoli this afternoon and Whispering Canyon tomorrow night.

Counter service has been very, very good. One highlight for us was Pollo Campero at DTD. Reasonable prices and excellent food! AP has been good (try the chilli) as well. Last night at DHS we found very good meatball subs at Toy Story Pizza Planet - a very pleasant surprise!

Any specific restaurant questions that I can try to answer?

Today we are heading to Epcot and hoping to catch the Liberty Singers and will be staying through the fireworks tonight. If it is too crowded we will be heading to the BWV to check out their holiday displays. The weather is warmer - in the 50's right now - and will be up near 70 the next couple of days..:thumbsup2

Sounds like you and your family are having a wonderful Holiday Vacation.

Sounds like a wonderful trip. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. Enjoy the time with your family! :goodvibes

Thanks for taking the time to do a trip report. Can't wait to read more. Have a wonderful holiday trip.

Another update: The weather today is finally seasonal!! The high was in the low 70's and it is not supposed to go below 50 tonight. Rather than face crowds during the day today, we slept in and then enjoyed SSR all afternoon. DS and I played some tennis, then DD and I hit the pool and hot tub. Not sure if I mentioned that she and I went in the hot tub earlier in the week (at night with temps in the 30's) - that was fun, but today in the sunshine was much nicer! Took a to go lunch from AP and have just been relaxing...perfect afternoon!

Yesterday we also slept in and had 2:00 ressies at Via Napoli. Broke our string of sub-5 minute bus waits (20 minutes for a bus to Epcot), but they were able to seat us immediately at 2:30. It is expensive (for pizza), but by far the best pizza on property! The entire family loved it (and the house salad as well). Crowds were quite heavy and waits for everything were 30 minutes (Spaceship Earth) and up (in the 100's for Soarin' and Test Track) so we headed to the Liberty Singers, caught the American Adventure and then decided to head over to the Yacht and Beach Club and the Boardwalk to check out the holiday decorations. On a whim we decided to try Beaches 'N Cream and ended up having burgers and ice cream - this is now a must do for us! After enjoying that meal (seems as we ate all day yesterday) we had fun exploring the resorts then headed back into Epcot for some Mousegear time and Illuminations with the holiday tag. Also incredible. We then bolted for the monorail and made our way to the MK. Not for any particular reason, but just because we could ;). Definitely people around, but we had a nice time.

We are heading to Wilderness Lodge for Whispering Canyon in a bit and will go to MK again - NYE fireworks are being shown tonight and tomorrow, looking forward to that! Then evening EMH until 3am!! Hopefully not too crowded. Remains to be seen what we do tomorrow once we get up....our last day :guilty:, but we have certainly made the most of the trip!

Sitting on our porch watching golfers play as I write this. Ahhh, the life!

Been home for a day now...going through the usual post WDW withdrawal. The plane we came back on was turning around and heading back to Orlando...considered hiding in an overhead bin and heading back!:goodvibes

The NYE fireworks (admittedly we saw them on the 30th) at MK were amazing! In fact, the entire night felt like NYE. They basically had a park-wide dance party going on with a dj playing music from in front of the castle. Cast members all over the park were dancing, singing and having a great time! Fun to see. Lots of people around, and since the weather was much warmer there were many more people hanging around until 3am for the evening EMH. We still basically walked onto everything with the exception of BTMRR and SM, but even those had reasonable waits. Loved our meal at Whispering Canyon too - not a quiet meal, but good food and a ton of fun!

New Year's Eve day we slept in (considering we were up until 4am we really needed to) and decided to really relax. Went to Winter Summerland Mini Golf (DW won!....my game left a bit to be desired :)) and then to AK for the evening. We were too late to see any animals, but enjoyed no wait for EE and Dinosaur, and had a decent meal at Yak & Yeti counter service. We then went back to SSR and spent some time packing :mad:then went to the SSR NYE celebration at the pool. They had (free!) decorate your own cupcakes, trivia, Toy Story 3, and dance music going on. A small crowd had a good time. DW and I also took a wonderful romantic walk around all of SSR just before midnight. We went onto our balcony at midnight at watched the Epcot fireworks which were followed shortly after by the DHS fireworks. Not quite like being there, but still impressive. Even more impressive was the sound of people cheering! We could hear people from DTD, SSR, and Epcot cheering at midnight - very cool! Went to bed shortly thereafter though, because we had a relatively early DME bus to catch on Saturday. That's the main reason we didn't go to a park for an actual celebration - figured it would be 2am at least before we would get back to our room....no way we could have pulled that off!

Anyway - a fantastic trip! I calculated it all out, and in 2010 DW and I spent 31 nights in WDW resorts:scared1:! DVC has certainly made years like this possible. 2011 won't be bringing us to WDW nearly as much - only 6 nights planned so far - but tied in with that is our very first Disney Cruise (on the Dream in August) so we have plenty to look forward to.

Thanks for reading!:)

Thanks for sharing!!! I dream of the day we can make that trip. Once the kiddos get a little older I think it will be doable. Glad you had fun.

I enjoyed reading your report! We watched NYE fireworks at the MK on the 30th as well! DS and DGD stayed until the very end, the other 5 of us went back to BWV after the fireworks.

We certainly had wonderful weather toward the end of the visit, didn't we?! I'm happy to say that here in our part of Ohio, we no longer have snow/ice on the ground!

What great sharing! Thanks! We loved SSR at Christmastime. You are making me "home"sick.

I think we might be making the Christmas/NYE trip an every other year tradition. If you know how to avoid the crowds and can stay up late (and sleep in the next day), it can be a wonderful!

The weather at the end was so much better than the beginning! I will take cold weather over rainy weather, though, and being from NH the cold really didn't bother us....just wasn't what we were hoping for! We still have snow, but warm weather over the weekend made a bunch disappear....
