Our news today said that Disney World is a no-fly zone now, and that you can see military jets flying over, and low. Anyone that is there now see or hear this? I ask, since I wonder why they feel they would have to.

I have the same questions. We are supposed to leave for WDW on Friday morning and I am a little nervous. Like do they know something I don't? But my husband is not worried at all.

I live near Washington DC and having military jets flying over is quite normal. Ok, I know it isn't normal for WDW but if they are, it should make you feel safer cause you know they are there to shoot down anything that might be a threat. I think after 9/11 they won't monkey around.

I was at Disney just before the Daytona 500 and the army flew over. (I am pretty sure they were on thier way to the 500). Perhaps there is a base near Disney (Tampa comes to mind). If so, I would think you would see a lot of training flights and since they have restricted the airspace near Disney that means they can train there. Or they could just be doing it to try and calm down people. (Althougth everything the gov't does lately to calm people seems to have the opposite effect!)

When we were at Disney last July, we saw fighter jets flying in the sky overhead very often. It actually was comforting knowing they were there to protect us.

Living right outside of NYC, we too are use to seeing these jets flying overhead, as they have been since 9/11. :):):)

I thought the command center was nearby. The war is run out of Florida.

I heard on the local news last night that they have increased flights by military over Disneyland, Disneyworld, NYC, and DC. Due to the upgrade to Orange Alert. Evidently Disneyland was mentioned as one the the sites that the Terrorist had been looking at.
But if we let them scare us then they have won. I am going to Disney as usual.

As a former air traffic controller whose last station was MacDill AFB in Tampa, I can tell you with certainty that MAFB does not have fighter jets stationed there. They don't have the airspace for it. They have nothing but refueling tankers, most of which I'm certain are else where at the moment.

DW would be a HUGE opportunity to make the country hurt. It would hurt the tourism industry in more ways than one (not to mention our local Orlando economy which relies heavily on the tourists). It would kill and injure hundreds of "infidels" and those unholy enough to be partaking in such a horrible thing as a vacation (no, these aren't my thoughts, just my interpretation on what the zealots think). It would kill and injure those from all over the world (as the destruction of the towers did). It would be in a place where most would think such things could never happen.

Unfortunately, we no longer live in a time, or country, where such things can no longer happen on our soil. While that does not stop me from visiting the parks or taking a vacation away from here, I also don't delude myself in to thinking it can never happen here. That thought will never occur to me again. While you hope it doesn't happen, you can't be surprised if it does, but I have no delusions this area, and others like it, is a prime target. And life goes on.

We saw military jets when we were there in October, as well. Of course, to us this is an everyday occurance, as we live in a military town... there are ALWAYS jets, helicoptors, etc.

The military is patrolling the skies over many places, not just WDW. I am glad to know that I will be well protected by those flying forces when we are there next week!

Seize the Day. Let freedom ring!!!!

Actually, the war is being run from Qatar. Gen Franks and most of CentComm (U.S. Central Command which is home based out of Tampa) moved over there a while ago to run the war.

for a group of fighter planes to get from the base in Pensacola to Orlando! Especially when your flying 500mph. :)

No Worries! Safer than your local shopping mall!

Many symbols of the USA are under increased security. WDW and Disneyland are among them. I have not heard that they have fighter jets patroling. What has been reported is that they instituted rules against flying over the parks. No aircraft can fly under 3,000 feet over the parks.

These are all preventative measures. No specific threats have been uncovered.

Gee, FirstNo... thanks for making us all feel so much better!

At my last job, I was paid to make people feel better. Now, I just get to be realistic.

Really, you can't live the rest of your life in your house because you're afraid some thing might happen to you. However, that doesn't mean you go running out into the street without looking both ways first. My point was to make "you" (the general tourist and not the poster I'm quoting) understand that something could happen. Just because it's Disney, doesn't mean it's safe (as countless people who have been assaulted or had their items stolen could attest to) and all will be peachy-keen.

It's like these idiot tourists who come here and leave credit cards, cash and expensive cameras lying in their unlocked vehicles (or rooms) and then are shocked and angered when they're stolen. Use some common sense. Just because it's Disney, that doesn't mean bad people don't lurk around looking for easy targets and bad things don't happen to good people.

While one can't control what some nutty zealot (or thief) may do, one can also keep oneself informed and use some common sense and not be so shocked that it could happen here. It could happen at a Six Flags. It could happen at the Statue of Liberty. It could happen at the Mall of the Americas. Awww heck, you could walk out your door, cross the street and get hit by a bus for goodness sake. It could happen any where, but you don't let that stop you from living your life and enjoying the time you have with your friends and family. Be smart. Be informed. And live, but not in a fantasy world. :)

Great advice FirstNo. I totally agree with everything you said. Even though I have to admit I am a bit more fearful than usual. I think if we are just a little more aware of what is going on around us and use some good old common sense everything should work out no matter what happens.

I'm trying to be positive here, too. I do not plan to cancel our May 30th trip. However, it's my kids I'm thinking of. If it was just me or my wonderful DH... well, we can live with that. But, having our kids with us. I don't need to even say it.....they are my life, my treasures.
Ok, I'll shut up.:(

We are the greatest country in the world.

Keep praying.

God Bless America and our soldiers.

Just got home today - no millitary jets overhead.
First several days had helicopters flying over - before the FAA restrictions went into place.

Not sure if they were private or Disney owened. If they were private...its a good thing they got them out of the sky.

Just for you all's info...there is another air force base nearby where there are fighter jets located...Patrick Air Force Base in Satellite Beach (give or take a few miles) on the Space Coast. I live right by it and the jets have been active.

black helicopters would just stop flying over my house everytime I'm in the bathroom. We live near Camp Pendelton and they always seem to be over my house when I am in the tub.

I heard DL has mostly CHP helicopters doing flybys. I think SoCal is more worried about our ports. A lot of ammo over at Fallbrook and Pendelton going off last night.

Oh yeah the Black Hawks. Sometimes I think they are about to land on the roof of my house. It's strange to be out taking a walk and having one so close that you can see the gun muzzle.

Yes there is increased security at Port Canaveral as well.
