Assateague Island - MARYLAND

Planning an overnighter in Ocean City next week and will drive over to the park on arrival day since we expect to arrive before check-in. We went to the Day Use Area late last summer. It was too windy to be on the beach, but we did see some ponies along Bayberry Drive. However, we stayed outside the "paid" portion of the park.

I'm wondering how worthwhile it is to pay $3 per person or $15 per vehicle (good for 7 days) to cross-over to hike the trails. I would love to go to the Virginia side and see the lighthouse, but I'll have to save that for another trip.

We always go into the paid portion of the park. Sometimes we see ponies, sometimes we don't. April 17-25 is free admission to the national parks, so if you'll be there then, you won't have to pay anyway.
