Asking for SS# at Closing

. . . I don't see it. Sure if you sell, the title co needs it for withholding. But we are purchasing. I don't believe the town where we own our house has our ss#s. (And it would be a mistake to put your ss# on a public deed) . . .

1) If you bought your house since 1994, then the mortgage people have the SSN.
2) It is LAW that any real estate transaction record the SSN - sell or buy.
3) The document is then forwarded to the IRS.
4) The timeshare doesn't necessarily count, unless deeded land.
5) You DO NOT have a real estate interest with DVC, thus SSN is optional.

DVC owners DO have a deeded real estate interest and EVERY deed is recorded with the appropriate county where the property is located. DVC owners in Orange County can even see their deeded interest online at Orange County, FL Official Records.

Those who own at HH and VB are also recorded with their respective counties.

Really? What law is that? Is it federal or state specific? Not trying to be sarcastic...I'm really not familiar with any law requiring the reporting of a ssn in connection with the purchase of real estate. I'm seeing an attorney who specializes in RE later today and I'll ask him.

What's your point? I know the lender has my ssn. (so does my bank and all my credit card issuers). That doesn't mean I want every company and/or person I do business with to have my ssn.
