Ask a professional bridal gown consultant! :)

Hi - First off thanks for offering your advice / service :) I hope you can help me out (I have 4 questions). I purchase a brand new Wedding dress ( Demetrios 9617 Princess Collection)through a Charity - My Fiance and I decided to have a baby (due to our ages and medical problems that may occur as we get older) So I was 2 months pregnant when I purchased my dress no change in size - I purchased my dress a size bigger just in case I had some extra baby weight. Our Daughter will be 2.5 months old when we get married :goodvibes 1) Do you think It should be ok a size bigger or should I have purchased 2 sizes bigger or can they redesign my dress to fit? 2) Now with a new dress are you suppose to have it cleaned, then altered or altered then cleaned? (I know it's a silly question but I just want to make sure) - 3) another silly question what is the difference between a petticoat and a crinoline? 4) how do you know which do you need or what size do you need for your dress? thanks in advanced!!

Thanks so much yes I'm in love with Ambrosia by Maggie I have tried on Brittany by Maggie but Im not sure if its similar enough (brittany looked realllll flattering but I wanted just a bit more pizazz on the breast area :) ) The corset feature is important as Ive been doing ALOT of weight loss in preparation for wedding dress purchasing (so far ive lost 100 lbs and plan to lose another 25 ish by next april! :) ) Thanks for your help Ill keep trying to get a sample in to try (they are trying real hard) and hopefully I can take some time go through the dresses and figure out something similar to try

ETA: Please enjoy your trip I loveeeee disney!

Ugh, my lovely internet company has had my service on the fritz since I got home so I haven't been able to get online until today!! But I just looked at Ambrosia online, so what I'm seeing is that you're looking for a strapless, dropped waist gown with pick-ups and beading. Maggie Sottero's Eloise Royale is also gorgeous, with a mostly tulle skirt topped with a caught up skirt with flower appliques and beading at the bust. Maybe that's a possibility? Her Cambria Marie gown is also stunning, with a full organza pick-up skirt and beaded bodice and hemline. Also check out her Janess gown, which has a longer torso and a slightly less poufy skirt.

Keep me posted on what you decide on! :)

Hello, I have a question:

I bought my dress a couple months ago but my wedding isn't until next July. The sales lady told me to just store it in the garment bag, with the zipper slightly open so it can "breathe" and keep it out of humidity. Is this ok? I'm also worried it will lose its shape. Is there something else I should be doing so that my dress is as good as new when it comes time to wear it?

TIA!

Congrats on your baby! Have your decided on names yet? You must be soooooo excited!! But the pregnancy question is always a tough one. I'm going to be totally honest, we usually advised ordering at least 2 sizes larger than normal when a bride is pregnant. It's probable that by the wedding, with a good diet and exercise program, you will lose most or at least a lot of any baby weight you may gain since it's 2.5 months after your due date. But even though chances are pretty good that you'll be close or maybe even all the way back to normal, I'm still a littler nervous about it. It's MUCH easier (and less expensive) to take a gown in than to let it out, so that's something to bear in mind. I would try to see if it's at all possible to get the size changed, just to be safe. It may turn out that one size larger than normal will be more than sifficuent, but I always lean on the super cautious side.

If a dress is brand new, then it doesn't need to be cleaned. It comes in pristine condition, so usually all that it needs is to be altered and streamed, and it's ready to go! But if you still want to get it cleaned, I suggest having it done before alterations, so that once your fitter finishes it, she can just steam it and have it ready for you.

Don't worry, the crinoline question isn't at all silly, I get it all the time! To be technical, they are simply two different terms for the same thing lol. But in practice, generally speaking, the crinolines are the layers of tulle or "horse-hair" that come as part of the dress underneath the outer skirt, and gives the skirt it's fullness. A petticoat is an extra slip of layers that give the gown even more fullness. In my experience it's not an essential or even typical thing for brides to choose, simply because it's an extra expense and is usually isn't that necassary if the gown is already a ballgown style. But it's definately a personal choice. If you decide you do want one, what you'll want to do is try a few different sizes under your actual dress, so you can make sure that the one you choose gives you the fulness you want but still allows the skirt of your gown to hang properly.

I hope this was helpful!! :)

Hello, I have a few questions that I was hoping you could help me with. I purchased my wedding gown at David's Bridal (Galina style vw9146) off of the 'as-is' rack and saved $250 versus ordering a brand new one. Since it was off the rack, I's sure it has been tried on by many people and some of the beading is quite loose, but I was assured they'd fix it. I need to have alterations as well as fix the beading, so should I wait to have it cleaned until the beading is fixed? I don't want it to lose beads at the cleaners but I'd also like to avoid having to get it cleaned twice. I'm getting married on Castaway Cay, so Disney will steam my dress once on board the ship so I wasn't planning on having that done before we leave. Also, they gave the gown to me in a plastic/vinyl material garment bag. Is is ok to keep the dress in there until my wedding in May 2011? I don't want it to yellow. One final question- I bought my veil off of ebay and it came to me in a plastic bag (but with original tags). How should I store it until the wedding? I took it out of the bag and it is currently hanging in the garment bag with my dress. Can they steam a veil or something to get wrinkles and creases out? Thank you so much in advance!!

Congrats on getting such great deals on your gown and veil! Sounds like you got a couple steals! Ordinarily, I would advise having a dress cleaned prior to alterations so it's ready as soon as your seamtress finishes it, but I share your concerns about losing any of the beading in the process. So I would advise waiting until the beading has been fixed before taking it to the cleaners.

The clear garment bag should be just fine, that's actually the way most boutiques store their samples to keep them safe. Your veil will be fine in there as well, and yes, it can absolutely be steamed as well, so no worries! Just keep them hung in a closet and away from damp or humid air, and they'll be in great shape for your wedding! :)
