Not specifically related to Disney, but just read that the release of the new James Bond film has been delayed to November because of the corona virus outbreak.

Yeah. Good call. “No Time to Die” isn’t exactly a great movie title during a deadly worldwide virus outbreak where indoor public gatherings (like cinemas) are being avoided or cancelled.

I’m sorry, I tried to find this regulation that was lifted on Sunday. What is it?

I think it is section 564 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. At least, this is the section that was invoked to avoid the regulation that is in place that requires FDA approval for labs to use diagnostic tests they have developed. On February 29th, the FDA announced that they were going to declare some sort of emergency situation, which allows labs to use their own diagnostic tests without waiting for FDA approval. it should make testing much easier when they remove the requirement that the FDA must approve the tests first before they can be used.

At least, that’s what I got from reading several articles about it, including one on fda.gov.

They are now proceeding under the Emergency Use Authorization Authority (EAU).

Maybe it's because I'm religious maybe because I'm Italian, where we keep giving food and water to dying patients, whereas many other countries don't, and we don't suspend cures even when it's clear the patient may not make it, because we do believe in miracles! . But it is frightening to be in a country that doesn't give much worth to human life. They are already giving up before even starting!

If they have resources to treat only one patient and they have a sick 88 year old and a sick 24 year old, they may have to make a choice as to who gets treatment.
It is very scary to think of governments making decisions as to who lives and who dies. I don’t want my or my family’s lives in the hands of bureaucrats.
It also says something to the seriousness of this virus if world leaders are thinking that they may not have resources enough to treat everyone who gets sick. Sounds like a smart move to close places like Disney so hopefully people don’t have to hope that the government chooses them over someone else.

Triage is normal in battlefield situations, they are talking about having to treat this virus like you would mass causalities on a battlefield where you have limited resources. It sucks but because medicine has a shelf life and you cant really easily ramp up production on scale quickly and disperse it when the global trading system is effected, it sadly makes since that in the eventuality as a doc they might have to make those tough choices, to save what and who you can with the resources available.

There's literally no citation in there about where they got their information. They couldn't even get a comment from the public health department. . Expanded testing is not available right this minute in most places, but probably will be by the end of next week.

Most likely FL hasn't set up how they're going to do this. Even Seattle, who HAS had expanded testing available all along but couldn't use it, are not yet churning out thousands of tests a day.

I can't imagine the vacation capital of the US not being aggressive. Also, it's a retirement hotspot so there are lots of at-risk people. But if they really don't intend to follow guidelines, the uproar from the medical community (and probably the Governor) will end that pretty quickly.

With all of the management of this outbreak being done locally, you have at least 50 state public health offices involved and hundreds of local ones. There are going to be hiccups and delays.

Doctors don't pit people against each other, at least not in the US (which is the system I'm most familiar with). No life is valued more than any other life. It will be first-come first served and they'll keep going until they run out of space and beds. After that, they'll look at who is best able to recover, irrespective of age, but I doubt very much it will come to that.

Edit: But we had better not start comparing countries because that kind of bickering helped get the other thread shut down.

Sounds like if there is a big outbreak it won't be beds or drugs running out. It will be medical staff. 12% of Italy cases I heard are medical staff

In the first reports out of China, it was 40%. I think because they were taken totally by surprise, so this is an improvement.

I think it's somewhat the fog of war. Some miscommunication about what the capacity is NOW versus what it WILL be. I would expect DeSantis to put the hammer down, after all, wasn't Pence just there? It would be sheer insanity to do anything else, so let's just see.

Honestly, I wish the public health people had put more time into worrying about pandemics than lecturing people on soda pop, but that's just me.

Ultra Music Festival in Miami was just canceled today. This is a pretty huge cancelation. It brings in around 100,000 people from outside of Miami every year and has a really big economic impact.
