Anyone ever been? Can you give me some family ideas of what to do while we are there? There will be 2 adults and 3 kids ages 9, 8, and 5. So far we are planning to go to Sliding Rock, Chimney Rock and horse back riding. No of any other fun things to do while I'm there?

Biltmore! If you like historical places at all you should go see it, its one of my favorite places to visit when we are in Asheville. That is a beautiful part of the country, I hope you enjoy your visit. :)

If you are going to Blowing rock, Tweetsie railroad is not that far away. Another one is Grandfather Mountain.

It is gorgeous but not sure very young children will like it too much.

I remember going when I was 10 and being bored stiff while my parents sampled the fine wine my brother and I sampled the finest grape juice.

Also the tour is very long and it is more for the 12 and up gang but then again all children are different and they may love it.

Depending on where you are staying there is a shuttle bus that can take you on a tour.

I had a friend get married there last year and the pics were outstainding. I wish I had some on a disc to show you guys.

The Grove Park Inn is another beautiful landmarks in Asheville. The downtown area is awesome!!!! It is a great place to park your car and just explore--coffe houses, restaurants, cool shops, artwork, usually musicians, etc...

Just so that you are aware, most of the other things mentioned on this thread are quite expensive. I think Biltmore is now up to $35 a person to tour. I forget how much Chimney Rock is-I think around $12 per person to walk the trails. We live less than an hour away--so we hit Asheville a couple of times a year. It is truly beautiful.

Wow you guys thanks for the ideas...but what is the Tweetsie Railroad that SSB seemed to have wonderful memories of?

You'll have to stop by to tell me hi! I'm just outside of Asheville.

Tweetsie Railroad is a small amusement park. Tweetsie is about 2 hours from Asheville.

Sliding rock is a great place to go - but the water is COLD!!!! Make sure you bring some old jean shorts to slide in.

Where are you planning on staying? How long will you be here?

I was just at the Biltmore Estate two weeks ago. It was spectacular. We went on a Sunday at the end of May. We saw very, very few children there. One family with little children, another with an around 12 (who was complaining that he was bored!) and a baby in a pouch. That was all, all day.

The tour is pretty demanding, a lot of stair climbing and walking. We got the audio tour (an additional $7, I think). It was very interesting but I don't think I would bring my 14 DD, she would be bored. My 16 DS might enjoy it, he enjoys history.

The cost was $39 per adult and $19.50 for children 6-16. If you go it really is much better to get the audio tour which is another $7 per person. We ate lunch at the Stables which I think was the cheapest dining option and I spent $50 on three salads and soft drinks.

There are several good rivers for kayaking and rafting. Nantahala is one of the better known river guide companies.
You might try an internet search for more info. Have a great vacation - that's a beautiful area!
