Not sure if this is the thread to post this question, but here goes. We will be at SSR for Ash Wednesday. Is there a church nearby on or off property? My wife and family are Catholic. If they cant get to a church, not a big deal, but they would really like to go if they can.

I believe the closest Church is Mary Queen of the Universe. There's a website for it if you need more info.

As the other poster says "Mary Queen of the Universe" It's a tourist parish, only for tourists pretty much. It's located close to Dolly Parton's Stampede.

Go to the DIS home page, click on "planning" then scroll down to "churches". You can find an address and phone number there.

We have been there before and thought it was beautiful and it's very close to Disney. Mass was full of people from all over the world. Much nicer than mass at the Poly the morning after an Aloha show(but we only tried that once).

We're looking forward to going to Mary Queen of the Universe Church in June. I'd encourage you to go if you can- services around the country (world!) can be very different and unique. My family always thinks I'm nuts, but they like it once I drag them.

The absolute best was Easter in a tiny parish on Kauai. The side walls of the church folded completely open so the breezes could blow through- they played slack-key guitar, the little kids played on the grass outside. Best of all, all the visitors got ti leaf leis! I guess it was our sunburns that gave us away:lmao:

P.S. Churches serving a tourist population tend to run on tight budgets- we always put a nice check in the donation basket. A couple of times we got a handwritten note mailed back thanking us for that.

do they have mass every sunday at the poly??? we will not have a car and hate to leave the property if we do not have too. We have been to Mary Queen of Universe and it was a beautiful experieince for us as well.

The Poly no longer has weekly mass. Only time that mass is celebrated on disney property is Christmas Day and Easter Sunday over in the Fantasia Ball room at the Contemporary.

We will be there in June, also! What we loved most about Mary, Queen of the Universe was the fact that everyone at mass participated! I guess that's because you really want to be there if you are taking time out of your vacation to attend mass. During the opening song, the place just rang out with all the singing - my husband looked at me in amazement. My daughter enjoyed the mass also - she whispered to me - "wow - everyone is responding!" lol

We try to put a nice check in the donation basket also. My parents have a "brick" on the wall with the family name... I think we might do that this year.
:dance3:

Yes, we always attend services at the Shrine when we are in Disney. It is very lovely and on Sundays they offer free coffee and doughnuts after mass. It was nice to sit down and talk to people from all over the world. FYI, we've taken taxis from several resorts to the Shrine and they run about $15-$17 each way.

Nope, the shrine is about 2 miles closer, but I would check to see if the shrine was scheduled to dispense ashes or not.

Thanks! I guess we will stick to the Shrine, then... We aren't coming until June! Ash Wednesday will be spent at our home parish! ;)

Oh for sure, MQofTU Shrine is a not to be missed "attraction" for those of the Catholic faith. Even though we are local residents and members of a RC Church in St Cloud, occasionally we like to attend mass at the shrine. It is very beautiful and the church is really magnificent. And the gift shop has a lot of items that are really hard to find.

I LOVED the Gift Shop! We took a taxi from the Dolphin, and were VERY early for Saturday evening mass, so we strolled the grounds, TRIED to find my parents' "brick" (no luck! lol), and browsed in the gift shop. So pretty!

I totally agree that the Shrine is "not to be missed"! As I said before, just the fact that the whole place was filled - AND everyone participated! What joy!

:yay:
