ASAP help needed...son just got bit by a mouse - UPDATE PG 2

I was bit by a rat when I was little and I can still remember that trip to the ER quite vividly. I'm sure a lot has changed since then though. I'm thrilled to hear that things have worked out so well for you. :)

I hope you didn't think because of my post that you should take the mouse to the ER! I just meant to keep it until a professional could tell you what to do with it as far as testing if needed!

So glad to hear all went well with the trip to the ER!! Thanks for the update!! :D

I was bitten by a mouse way back in 1988 and I still have lingering effects.

Season passes, DVC membership and many trips per year usually help the pain.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. VH was being helpful, so I thought I'd post this to keep the world in balance.

I honestly thought this thread was going to be about a new Mickey obsession.::MickeyMo

Glad everything worked out OK.;) My Mom got bit by a Mouse that was loose in a Pet Section of Jefferson's Dept store, in the 70's!:o It had gotten lose, and she felt around, under a display case, on her hands and knees no less, for the Mouse, and it bit her. This is how she was able to catch it, and give it to the Clerk, while it was hanging on her finger.:p I think she might have went to the Dr, the next day, I am not sure, but she lived to be 72 years of age....my Mom that is, don't know about the Mouse.;)

Microcell - no, i'm glad you made mention of "catching" the mouse because although they made fun of us at the hospital, if we didn't have the mouse, I guarantee you they probably may have treated him differently and started him on some medicines he didn't need. This way, the Dr was just able to see it was a small, unrabid mouse. These things can bite though....

I've never ever been bit by a rodent before, and none of my parenting books have a section on what to do (just for dog and bug bites).

If my son's regular doctor was open, we'd have gone there. I'm glad we didn't hesitate to go to the ER, in case god forbid something went wrong.

I'm already laughing about it....esp. when my son wanted to keep the mouse as a pet...

If it were my child I would not be asking what to do on a BB, I would have him at the ER IMMEDIATELY!!!!

Gail,

While I certainly understand your post, and had this been a head injury, broken bone, bee sting, rabid dog bite, etc., I completely agree, however this was not the case.

I was trying to get any information off of Google as to what is proper medical care in this instance since it didn't say in my books and i've never delt with a mouse bite before. He wasn't bleeding and was with my DH who was attending to him. I know someone here on the DIS would know the answers and within 5 minutes we decided to head over to the Hospital just to get it checked out and our fears put to rest. My son had stopped crying and there was no reason to get hysyerical.

I didn't come here expecting to be judged....but what can I say, that's the way things seem to turn around here.

I need to get my eyes checked. When I read the subject line I thought it said, "ASAP help needed...son just got hit by a moose - Update PG 2."

I'm so glad to hear he didn't get hit by a moose but got bit by a mouse and will be just fine!!!

Hillbeans: Glad your son is okay, its funny he asked to keep it as a pet. I would think he wouldnt like it becasue it "hurt him" LOL

Gail: Its not like her son got mauled by a dog or somthing just a mouse bite which to me is not what I call a code RED emergency. I am sure she respects your opinion but you dont need to judge her.

People on here it seems like they go off the deep end on little things. I am not saying everyone but some people. They starting flaming this poor person asking a question.

No offense Gail to you but just stating the facts.
Have a Disney Day,

Glad everything is ok! BTW, what DID you do with the mouse? :)

wow, does your DH have a fathers day story that he will be telling for years to come!! I am so glad your ds is ok!

Damo - now if he got bit by a "moose" we'd definitely probably be on the nightly news.

Stimpy - after finally convincing my DH to let me let the mouse go, we let it off near a field/stream not far from my house.

I'm glad to hear your little one is ok. Im surprised you were able to get the mouse away from the cat! LOL our cats would fight you tooth and nail for it.

Just an FYI...one can no longer call the ER to ask if treatment is needed or not. The HIPPA laws prevent them from dispensing advice over the phone.

Just a note to all moms (and dads et al.). Most every area has a Poison Control Center. They are a good source of info. Post the number on your fridge! Call them and you would be amazed what they can tell you. We had a son who was bitten by an ant, from a mailing for an ant farm, no less. He went crazy it hurt so much. The Poison Control Center stepped us through what we needed to do. This was while the other parent was still on hold waiting to talk to the advice nurse at Kaiser, typical weekend mess.

Carla (bitten by a few mice herself, but that is another story)

Almost 3 weeks ago our 4 year old was scratched by an unvaccinated neighbor's kitten. After doing a Google on cat scratches I became concerned because, though rare, rabies was a possibility. We called the pediatrician and he told us to have the kitten kept up for 10 days. I was so relieved when the 10 days (and 11 days and 12 days just to be sure) went by. Rabies scares me more than any other animal-borne disease simply because there is no cure.
