Okay here goes

Spoke with DD's principal this morning regarding what was being done with DD9 and art class.

Basically I just stated the facts again, that 3 out of 4 weeks, DD has come home in tears, has lost recess, and spends 36 hours sweating having art. It starts the Wednesday night before, and goes to Friday when she misses part of her recess for "not following directions"

The way it is right now- I can pull her out of art class, legally. The way it's worded in this state is "Arts" DD's classes do enough "arts" other than a structured art she will be okay. Also in VT, with parental permission a child can be removed from an "extra" (ie, music, gym, art) The Superintendent wants to "exhaust all options" which basically I said- we already did.

The principal is going to talk to DD9, and the sit in on art class Thursday. I explained to the principal that it wont matter if she is in there, its no different than me at work, when my boss is around, I dont slack off, same with this art teacher. You know as well as me, that when the principal or any other "teacher" is in that room, she will not be yelling at the kids.

After this week, I have no doubt that DD9 will no longer have art class. I have spoken to her gym teacher, and he is okay with her picking up another gym class during that 50 minute slot. It's actually the other 4th grade class in gym while she is in art, so it will be the same level as her.

I told DD9 that the principal was going to be talking to her, and she just needed to explain to her what was going on. She was in no way in trouble, or being "sent to the principal" but that the principal just needed to hear from her what happens in art class, in her own words.

So theres your update............i'll let ya know how thursday goes

Glad to hear that the principal is taking this seriously. I am so sorry for your poor daughter. It really stinks that this teacher is making a class that should be "fun" a living nightmare.

Gheez...Louise...these people are thick. A parent has to practically be Harry Potter to protect kids these days when there are obvious issues.

I am glad you found an acceptable solution.

What a shame though your daughter won't have art in her life. Hopefully you can make up for that at home by encouraging crafts or drawing or some other medium as an outlet for her creativity.

Have no fear snoopy dear, she will still have art in her life. We go to a local pottery place, do mucho crafto's here at home, go to the library craft nights etc..

Next year she's in a different school so she'll have it again then.

I was wondering what had happened. Let us know what happens next.

I can't imagine how the principal thinks sitting in on the class will help him spot the problem :confused3 As you said, she's going to put her best foot forward with the boss right there. Sheesh. Could he not observe from outside without her knowing?

At least your dd will soon be out of this situation. :grouphug:

Thanks for the update.

Very sad situation. Art was always one of my favorites and my DD's too. It's very sad when someone takes something that should be fun like art and really doesn't have a "wrong" way to do something and makes it unpleasant.
The only way the principal may get a true picture might be to secretly tape the class. But even then, it might be that the teacher only reacts that way to your DD and not to the other kids - so if your DD isn't there, the teacher may not need to be "on good behavior."
