As A Parent... Would This Upset You? Halloween Candy...

We are REALLY close with our neighbors kids. They are 6 and 10, and they come over and "hang out", help us rake, etc. We are friends with their parents, and get together often.

The parents are a little hyper with sweets and sugar. They really ration it.

They DO go Trick or Treating, though.

I bought three candy bars for each of the kids, and made big cookies the other day, so I was planning on adding a cookie along with the candy.

Would it upset you that friends got your kids so much junk?

No, would not upset me at all. If it did, I would just say thank you and move on.

Nope! DH and I are very conscious about our son's sugar intake. I would thank you and let him eat it at appropriate times.

No, it wouldn't bother me at all. BUt then, I don't get too wigged out about sugar anyway. I think it's very nice of you to get them each a whole candy bar and make them a big cookie. :goodvibes

Not at all. We try to ration out DS's sweets, too, but for holidays and special occassions we let him splurge a little bit.

DH's uncle has a huge bag of candy waiting for DS tomorrow nite and my FIL and his GF have a goody bag all done up as well...it includes a large package of Oreo cookies plus lots of candy bars and other goodies. We will allow a little bit tomorrow and the rest will be rationed out at snack times. Most of the candy gets spread out between DH(takes to work) my sister, who lives next door and then a bowl for here at the house. DS is happy and nothign goes to waste.

If I knew the parents rationed sweets, I'd find another way to spoil them than 3 candy bars and a big cookie. Each.

It wouldn't upset me, but I would think it was weird. Three full-size candy bars and a big cookie for a 6yo? My 7yo is a cookie fan, but I doubt she'd finish half of a big cookie, even over several days, and she'd either give the candy bars away unopened, or eat a bite from each and toss the rest. (She had free rein to raid her stash from trick-or-treating at the zoo on Friday, and ate a bite-size Milky Way. That girl did not get the candy-eating gene.)

I Wouldn't be upset. I would have the same rules with your candy as I do with the rest of the candy.

Oh, this boy will manage them just fine if left to do so! ;)

I guess I figured, since they go Trick or Treating anyways, they will get more candy than WE could ever give them. We aren't able to give out candy this year, but they would get the handful equivalent of three bars from us anyways! ;) I figured the parents would add our candy to the mix and ration accordingly! I always loved the full sized bars myself, so I figured it was a special treat! :)

Well, I like to try to be thoughtful when I give gifts and that doesn't sound like the most thoughtful gift from what you know of your friends' feelings about candy. You could still "spoil" the kids a little without the three candy bars each. The big cookie is a fun idea.

That said, I wouldn't be upset. I'd just ration the candy out as I'm sure the parents are planning on doing with all the trick or treat candy their kids receive.

Truthfully, it would not upset me but I'd probably be be trying to cut some sort of deal with DD to have one of the candy bars. lol

And truthfully, my sister rationed candy and she would have had a problem with it. And I guarentee you, they'd have never had all three candy bars. They ToTed but were never allowed to have all the candy. She'd keep about 1/2 of "the good stuff", give the rest away. The other stuff, like anything "gummy" or hard candy (not chocolate) was also given away. I always wondered why they even went.

ok I'm the weirdo I honor parents opinion. But that stems from my childhood. I had a neighbor who parents believed in everything being natural. She couldn't eat candy no soda no junk. My mom never let her have junk when she came over and as an adult since a few neighbors mentioned they would prefer there kids don't get candy I just don't buy candy for them anymore. I buy pencils, small toys, glowsticks etc.

We have never rationed our kids' candy at Halloween so it wouldn't bother me. If the parents don't like the candy they will probably just throw it out. As for the cookie-just make sure you put a tag or something on there so they know it is from you or they will throw it out. We have never let our kids eat homemade goodies from Trick or Treating unless we knew the people that gave them out.

No, I would just say thanks. Really, as a parent, there are much bigger things to worry about than this. They can still ration whatever they want and be gracious about receiving treats for their kids.

I think it's ok, and if the parents don't, they will decide what to do w/ it all.

However, knowing the parents feelings, I do think that 3 full size candy bars each is a bit much. I'd do one full size candy bar and the cookie, and maybe something non-candy (if you're really wanting to spoil them). They're going to get tons of candy from trick or treating (but not full size bars, so that idea is great, but again, I think 3 each is a bit much).

If you're making them each up a special baggie or something, I'd do the 1 big candy bar, your big cookie you're making (since that's special because you made it), and maybe 2 dollars each or a trinket type thing.

have fun, and it's very sweet of you to think of doing anything at all :)

OP I would have no problem with someone doing that for my child!

They get plenty of full sized bars while trick or treating, even we are giving out full sized bars this year--much easier.
