Art Supply recommendations needed

Wow, I think Imzadi has it covered! I will just third or fourth or fifth the Prismacolor pencils. DD17 loves them. We started with a 12 pack from Walmart, then last Christmas I got her the 72 pack and this year she's getting the 150. Check dickblick.com and Amazon for prices. Hobby Lobby seemed to be a lot higher. She thinks they make all the difference. See my avatar- she drew that with Prismas.

She also prefers her Strathmore Toned Tan sketchbook to all others.

Thanks everyone! No Hobby Lobby here :( and the workers at our Michael's and AC Moore are less than helpful. I will for the brands you all have recommended. :santa:

The coupon this week at Michaels is 50% off one regular price item. Strathmore art pads were on sale over the weekend but I think it was a Saturday only deal. Go to the Fine Arts section of the store. The pencils and markers should be in the same aisle. Prismacolor has individual pencils as well as a pack. I would go with the pack of 12 or 24 to start.

Michaels also has some art kits on sale this week. They had sketch, paint, and drawing kits.

What state are you in? For some reason I'm thinking CT... If that's correct then there is Hobby Lobby but a better store is Dick Blicks.

I find the paper to be the biggest issue for me. I can draw and ink in just about any medium but I need my high-quality drawing/painting paper.

Wow Imzadi! Thank you so much for taking the time to write all that up. I am taking notes and will send her all the great links and information. I think I have some mommy guilt for not encouraging her enough-- we have done a few little summer art classes when she was younger and when she showed an interest in clay I found her a class on clay and throwing pottery, which she apparently did quite well in but after that one class there wasn't any other option to continue until she gets older. We have an arts center that offers classes but she is in that in between age for most of them-- too old for the kid classes and not old enough for the adult classes. Because of her class schedule she won't even be able to take a school art class until her Senior year. The drawing thing just came out of the blue this weekend and she spent hours on it. She has been very stressed out at school and she was so relaxed and just seemed "in the zone" while drawing. She has some learning issues and struggles with academics, and works her tail off to get good grades, so it is nice to see her doing something that she enjoys and that seems to be coming easily to her. Unfortunately she is also a perfectionist and is very critical of every "mistake" she thinks she made.

We get the AC Moore and Micheal's coupons so I have plenty of those. I will be looking for the things you all have recommended. I really appreciate the input from everyone. I scrapbook but outside of that I am clueless about art. I think the Strathmore paper was on sale on Amazon earlier today. I don't mind paying a little more for quality supplies as long as they are worth it.

But along with the exploration in more advanced art techniques and supplies, she has asked for a giant pack of googly eyes for Christmas!

FYI The Strathmore paper was on sale at AC Moore today - Buy 1 Get 1 50% off, didn't pay attention to when the sale ends.

I will also recommend Dick Blick although I do always price compare with Amazon.

DD loves Prismacolor, we always use the coupon at michaels.
