ART, Have I been doing it wrong?

Planning another trip to Anaheim.

Considering staying more than a casual walk from the parks (especially at the end of long days).

We used ART on a previous trip and were less than pleased.

I understand untimed circulators, but am wondering if there are things I can do to have a positive experience using ART?

I have been using ART for a number of years and have had no issues.

My tips
1. I always leave my hotel at the same time every day. On the first morning I go out and just wait for the bus. I check the time it turns up and write it down. Then on the following days I aim for that bus time.

2. I always plan / expect to wait around 10 minutes at a bus stop. For example. In the mornings I know that a bus will turn up approx 6.20am. Therefore I plan to be at the bus stop at 6.10 am.

3. For the last number of years I leave the parks at around the same time every night. I know there is a bus which leaves around 11.00pm. Therefore I plan to be at the bus stop around 10.50pm. I know it takes me 10 minutes to walk from The Hub to the bus stop.

4. ART also has a text service, where you text the bus stop number and you will get an approx next arrival time.

I use city buses in my day to day life, and I have used public transport all my life in multiple countries.

I guess I have different expectations of the ART service than someone who never uses city buses in their day to day life. In my opinion the ART service is better, with a more frequent and on time service than some of the city buses in various countries I have been to.

Can you stay at a hotel with a private shuttle, e.g. CCI or Majestic Garden (which is also walking distance to the M&F tram)? Or stay walking distance to the TS lot/free shuttles? The Hilton hotels (Embassy Suites Garden Grove, Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton Inn and Suites) about a mile south of the parks on Harbor use their own shuttle service which gets good reviews here.

Do you happen to know if there is a fee for the Hilton shuttles?

We found ART utterly hopeless when staying at HoJo. Would never use again.

But did you use the text function to see when the next scheduled bus would be at? If you dont check the bus times and just turn up and then get mad you have to wait, then its your fault , not the bus company. Do you use city busses on a regular basis? Alot of the frustrations with ART are because people are not used to using public transport in their day to day lives.

I literally just stayed at the HoJo and used ART this weekend. Even though it is a short 10 minute walk, we were with someone who had mobility issues who preferred to ride.

My experience was mixed at best. Basically, if the bus happened to be there when we walked out of the park, then we hopped on and everything was fine. But if there was any kind of wait it seemed impossible to know when the bus would arrive with no reliable way to figure out when that might be.

I would love to know a better way to utilize ART, but this was my experience:

Maybe I was doing something wrong, but whenever I tried to look up the time that the bus would be at the Disneyland Main Transportation Center, it said “no arrival information for this stop“. It gave that stop text2go code as “1“ - but when you text that number to 41411 it says that 1 is not a valid code.

I tried to guess when a bus be at the Transportation Center, based on when the site said the buses would arrive at the Courtyard stop (which is the first stop for HoJo after leaving the park on the Disney Way line). This worked as expected one time. A second time no bus ever showed up even though we had waited quite a while, so I’m unclear how it could have been at the Courtyard stop at the advertised time if it never stopped at the Transportation Center. A third time, the bus was scheduled to arrive at the Courtyard stop at 1:00, however, the bus didn’t arrive at the transportation center until 12:57, and when it did arrive the driver said he was going on break so it would be 10 to 15 minutes before the bus left.

Seemed like there was no way to have any idea when a bus would come, which meant at times waiting half an hour - which to me is too long to wait for a 10 minute walk! To make matters worse, it was very sunny this weekend and a large section of the waiting area is not covered.

I’d say, if we were staying somewhere more than a 25 minute walk away, and could figure out some way to get reliable arrival times, then it would be worth it. But any closer than that and you are better off walking. And if I’m in the same situation again, I’m going to suggest that person put their money toward renting a scooter instead of the ART.

From what the drivers have told me every stop is 20 minutes and I always found them to be pretty close on time. I always looked at the website of the first bus of the day time and then did the math from there.

For example, we’re staying at the Clarion and the ART website tells me the first bus of the day is at 6:20 and if it comes every 20 minutes then I know it will always be:

:20
:40
:00

throughout the day, sometimes they run late but I’ve found them always to be on time in the morning when it matters most. (At least to me!)

I use public transport every day. For a service which is supposed to circle around every 20 minutes, waiting 40 mins when the timetable says one should be arriving 5 mins after you go to the bus stop, (and eventually giving up and walking) is not good service! Figured out why one night when we caught it back to HoJo. Despite our hotel being the last one on the schedule, our driver took us straight there. So everyone else waiting on that route to be picked up and taken for an evening in the park, just missed out! The bus simply didn't go on the circuit it was supposed to. We had a 5 day pass, and after 3 days just gave up. That's not how a bus service should run! My advice is DON'T BOTHER! If you cant walk it, then uber. Or stay somewhere with a dedicated shuttle that is always on time like the CCI.

Agree that the CCI shuttle is always on time. One tip about the ART shuttles: note the hotels next to yours and which ART route they are on. You can catch those shuttles, too, since they will pick up/drop off next door to your hotel. Someone posted that they kept track of the schedule for the routes for the Motel 6 and for the Clementine so that they could catch one shuttle or the other depending on the time.

When we stay offsite and not within walking distance, we use Uber. We have Uber'd over and ART'd back a couple of times when we saw the shuttle sitting at the loading area, but ART is generally more expensive than Uber using single fare tickets if there's more than one of you.

Ditto Lyft/Uber. SO easy, and it's like 5 or 6 bucks. Totally worth it. We have also taken a cab back from the parks since they are sitting right there waiting in the loop.

The ART stinks. You are far better off staying within walking distance to the parks. Or walking distance to Toy Story parking lot so you can ride their bus for free. And that bus is reliable.

Honestly, I have never had a problem with ART. Maybe I've just been lucky? But I've used it extensively on half of my DLR trips and found it to be fine.

My first experience with ART was not great because we were a big group (with a stroller) and we went during a really busy time of year.. The busses were always full and people were super rude and cut the line at our hotel every day.

I am using it this trip as I am solo.. I think I will be just fine.
