Armed Forces Salute tickets, more than 6?

So I have family members going to WDW this weekend and they are planning to use the AFS tickets that they bought on the base. I understand that you can buy 12 but I have read that you can only use 6?

I am asking because I believe that they are planning to use more than 6 tickets for extended family members not just their children.

My BIL is active military (he bought the tickets) so I know he's good for 6. My FIL was also in the military years ago but might not have any current military ID so I'm not sure if he could count for more tickets.

Will they have a problem activating tickets for 5 adults and 4 children?

Does anyone have experience with being denied the use of AFS tickets because they tried to use too many at one time without proper ID?

They aren't really planners and weren't even aware of FP+. I don't want them to be caught off guard.

You can buy and use 12 for this year only. They extended the end date until December. The only thing that may limit the number of tickets would be if he bought and used any AFS tickets from October 2014 until now.

According to the Disney website, eligible military members (essentially someone with a current military ID) may purchase up to 12 tickets but the eligible member must use one of them.

I've used these several times when the max was 6 tickets (and I've never bought more than 4) so was surprised to learn the number has increased to 12.

If your FIL RETIRED from the military, he is also eligible. If he was just in the military for his four year term or whatever, but did not serve long enough to retire, then he is not eligible.
